Lexus: How to update GPS Navigation Maps

- In this video, I'll show you how I upgraded the Lexus ES350 Navigation maps. I didn't see any good videos out there on this subject so I thought I share what I learned.
I make no guarantees about this video, please research before using the information.
1) This video will demo the 2012 to 2018 Lexus ES350 but this works for the GS350 as well.
I did the same update on the 2016 Lexus GS350 (thought the menu was different a bit).
For the Gen08 radio for the 2012-2018 ES350, you'll need to buy the 2020 update and it will feature the 2019 map version. Per Lexus dealer, the maps sold in 2020 will be 2019 completed maps that's how it works. Part # PT219-GEN08-19 for the 2020 calendar year.
The GS350 uses PT219-GEN09-19. Note that the last 2 digits as in "19" are the map version. It's always 1 year lagging for the calendar year.
The update for 2022 will use 2021 maps.
PT219-GEN09-21 (PT219GEN0821)
For vehicle models:
ES350/300h 2018
GS350/450h 2016-2020
LS460/600hl 2016-2017
LX570 2016-2019
2) Before upgrading the maps, you will need to buy the MicroSD map from a Lexus dealer. The MSRP is $210 + tax.
3) *DO NOT POWER ON* the vehicle when you are removing or installing the MicroSD.
4) Also before performing any update, park your car in a safe place before starting the update. It will take around 20 minutes total to complete based on my experience.
5) VERY IMPORTANT STEPS:
DO NOT TURN OFF the vehicle while it's updating or it will damage the vehicle NAVI System.
Wait for everything to finish before turning off the vehicle.
** SPECIAL NOTES**
If you are not sure, please spend the money for the Lexus/Toyota dealer to install the Navi maps. It will be much cheaper than buying a new GPS system which will be very expensive if you are not able to follow these directions.

NOTE: I've posted a summary in the description, PLEASE READ it carefully and watch the video to make sure you understand the process 100% before attempting. If you are not 100% sure what you're doing, please pay the Lexus/Toyota dealer to update this Navi version for you. FYI, I tried the Navigation maps for the 2016 Lexus ES 350 and 2016 Lexus GS350 models. I will likely work on newer ES and GS models. I'm pretty confident it will work on other models of Lexus/Toyota given they all use the same setup.

Thanks a lot for this very instructive video. I succesfully did it on my 2017 RX450h - and the most difficult thing was to grab the old SD-Card out of the slot... ;-)

My nav/radio system reboots randomly. Can the outdated map be the cause for this issue? I did hard reset removing battery terminal for hours and reconnected but it didn’t help. Thanks for your thoughts
My car Lexus NX 300 2018 not display the Destination icon and Compass sign anymore Even I try to click on small icon of Nav (Top right sign) it's still not show up. Could you help me fix this please..
Thanks for the video - Couple of questions: Is the update the same for the 2015 ES350? My Lexus dealer indicated they had to install the update (as you would expect) because they have the key. I am in the US, is there a key necessary?
Yes, we have a 2016 ES and 2015 is probably the same with the Lexus microSD part # (check with the part dept). Once the microSD is used, that key is used. It won't work. Only buy the microSD from Lexus.

Yes, insert the sd card while the vehicle is powered off. Then turn on vehicle.
Love my 2014 Lexus ES350 but upgrading the maps in the nav system is entirely too expensive. Use your phone or garmin and have a much better map with free or cheap map updates.
i have a 2013 es 350 too ,with only 50 thousand kilometres in canada where can i buy the update for a better price and tell me. im thinking of taking the car to europe how do i get the european map ,another think should i do the transmission fluid exchange ,because they say is for life
I'm only finding the GPS maps best at the dealer. The ones on the web doesn't work as many have said. For the transmission, I do it 60K miles (96km) or less. Lexus won't you a free new transmission if it break out of warranty, don't risk it for not doing the transmission fluid change.
Good morning. I have a question. I have a IS 250 2007 Lexus. I transport the car to Puerto Rico. That system don’t have the PR map. I would like to update the GPS. There’s any way I can do it?

I have a 2006 Lexus is350 that the calendar still stuck at 2001,, I cant seem.to figure out if the GPS have anything to do with it.. any help is appreciated.
Maybe. It's time is thinking 2001.

That model year doesn’t have microsd, it’s a dvd update. Not sure the dvd is still made. Check with dealer.
Thanks for the video. I have 2013 ES-350 and I don't have that slot where to put a new microSD card. As a matter of fact I don't even know what a map system I have. Either based on microSD or DVD? Any idea what should I do and where to look for it in the car? Thanks!
It’s probably a microSD.
@@netman88 Thanks for the reply. I called a dealer and was told that there is no microSD card. The dealer downloads the maps at the dealership.
wait... so updating it is done by ordering a new SD card with the info already on it? we cant just go online and update it ourselves?
If it's on the model year vehicles specified. If it's a ES 2013-2018, it's the microSD. The newer models ES are auto updated always with a special service.
Lexus fuks us either way.
I have a 2014 ES 300 H and you mentioned that do not turn off the engine but sometimes the hybrid will turn off because the engine is not need it. How would I keep that engine running?
For hybrid, engine doesn't need to be actively on but the the car has to be "on".

I purchased a new ES 350 a few weeks ago. The Navigation is terrible compared to a Garmin GPS.
New toll road in Florida is not covered. We got lost on some secondary roads near Gainsville, FL.
The Lexus navigation got us where roads were blocked and next leads us around in circles.
Any suggestions what to do?
New as in 2022 model ES? or new to you on an older model. The navi maps are made by a few companies, Lexus/Toyota doesn't make those btw. So going to another manufacturer, it maybe the same.
@@netman88 It is a new 2022 ES350. Thanks for info that Toyota/Lexus doesn't make those. I will complain to Lexus soon and see what hey suggest. The Navigation is not good.
@@willdehne1 Yes, the navi isn't good. I complained about it not showing the exit names on the navi if a route isn't setup also.
How much did you pay for the updated scard? I called my local dealer they want over 600 dollars to install the updated one on my 2015 GS 350
I recommend search around online for other Lexus dealers. Bell Lexus is reasonable. It should be around $210 + shipping.
How do update 2011 es350 maps?
It's a different model so maybe check other videos on it. ES350 2013 and on use this.
Does the upgrade wipe out your address book, previous destinations, etc?

I have a 2017 Lexus ES 350 and nothing happened once I installed my mini SD card that I purchased today from Lexus. Any advice out there?
Did you turn off the car then install it? Did you get the right part #? I think there's a new version out there.
Normally, once installed and the car starts it will start the setup as in the video.
@@netman88 before I found this video, I turn the car on installed the SD card and nothing happened. I took it out and turned off the car. Then once I watch this video, I installed the SD card again and turn the car on and waited about five minutes and nothing happened. I’ve tested the system to see if I can find previous address as well as a new address, with the new SD card in with the motor turned on and it finds it fine. I’ve just never seen anything on the screen saying it’s updating.
@@CarlaSpacher Looks an unusual way to update it. The system maybe confused.
I think it has to be a sequence for it to see the SD card. Put the old microSD back and turn on and off the vehicle.
With the vehicle off, take the old SD out and put the new one in.
I assume you got the microSD from a Toyota dealer.
If it an OEM microSD, call the dealer to verify the part # works for your vehicle if it still doesn't work. If it's a copy or from Ebay or elsewhere, it won't work.
@@netman88 I did I will take the SD card from Lexus dealership. I emailed them this evening. Hopefully they can make sure that I have a Gen8. I’ll try what you suggested tomorrow. Thank you so much for your help!
@@netman88 I have a 2017 Lexus ES 350 and purchased a $210 2021 update from the dealer. I removed the sd card from the drive and started up my car. I hit the “menu” button near my arm rest and then “navigation”. The screen read, “enter SD card at any time”. I slid in the new SD card. I hit the three bars in the top left corner; Map Data; (there were three things listed); and I chose the second one, right above legal (I can’t remember what it was named). There, it showed me the year of my update, 2021. I have never updated our navigation system. This was the first time.
Thanks netman88 I just got a 2019 RX 350 F-Sport L/certified on 5/25/2022 - Noticed the Map Version is 21-38-17 [2018-06-01] I am assuming that I should of got the latest version. Today is 5/31/2022 would a new on be released tomorrow ? Any advice would be appreciated, I believe I should get a free one from my dealer being it should be part of my L/Certified refresh.

@@netman88 Cars shipped to Nigeria from US doesn't work for the navigation. Only shows locations in US while car is in Nigeria.

Not sure about your model, check with dealer if they sell the microsd card. If yes, you can update.
What about a Lexus es 350 2011 via USB
Those are different setup. Check with dealer.

Lexus dealers. See you can a better price if you shop for this from an online lexus dealers. Ebay has many used maps, don’t buy there. It can only be used once since the system writes to the sd card.

Probably yes. Check for the microsd slot to confirm
Would this work for 2013 gs350?
The 2013 GS50 doesn't have the microSD I believe. For that year, it maybe a DVD or has to be updated by a computer at the Lexus dealer. Starting in 2016 GS350, Lexus starting making that software available with microSD.

Never tried that, also doubt it will work.

Been a while but I think around $275 depending on your vehicle maps. For Lexus, look at parts.lexus.com or Toyota at parts.toyota.com for it.
