Hi Steve, thanks so much for your videos. This morning I was able to service and get my hot water boiler back to full functionality after watching several of your videos. Very much appreciated from all the way over here in Connecticut, especially in the time of Covid.
Send word to the electrician to keep playing with connections and you'll be happy to come in and replace boards every week if necessary.

That was a good one right there. We have been selling a ton of the Rheem branded furnaces and I think they're the best furnace on the market right now. But I've yet to see one of the boards all loosey goosey like that. 🔥👍

Steve, that connector didn't just "die" on its own. That wasn't a case of "cold" solder joints... Those traces were actually lifted off the circuit board! That is *mechanical* damage. Someone before you got there didn't watch what he was doing and tried to jam the connector on that board (probably backwards) and ripped that poor connector off the board. Nicely diagnosed and fixed, "good enough for that neighborhood."

That is not what caused the problem. There is a real possibility the female connector was not seated all the way down onto the board when the board went through wave soldering solder. As soon as the male connector was pressed on the female connector it was pushed down onto the board and compromised the printed circuit traces on the back side of the board. Another possibility is someone applying side to side pressure while seating or unseating the male connector. You see Steve doing that while replacing the board. That will definitely cause the problem. Pulling/pushing straight out/in is the only correct way to mate or un-mate the connectors. The original board could have been easily fixed.
@@pcar5 If that was the case the furnace would have most likely not passed their QA checks before leaving the factory. It would be rare for a circuit board with weakened traces (that carry a significant amount of current) to be functional for several years. Occam's Razor suggests hoofbeats are horses, not zebras... The most likely failure vector was the heavy-fisted "electrician" accelerating this poor board's demise.

I still have my bench soldering kit and micro kit for field repairs. mostly had to replace resistors and capacitors, sometimes relay's. It came in handy for repairs like this and when supply house didn't have one available or was too expensive and far away. That board was probably defective straight out of the plant.

I had that exact same thing happen,but the furnace i was working on was a Rheem mid efficient
once over, it all it takes from yous,,lol good job as always
From the solder joints, it looks like that connector was elevated from the board by about a half inch when it was soldered at the factory, when your electrician friend plugged the connector in or probed it with a voltmeter or whatever, it probably pushed the connector back and fractured the solder joints. The manufacturer should have soldered the connector such that it was touching the board, just like the adjacent connector to the right.

regardless of who wins, If we even get the one who will get something done, I don't think anything will even be passed, due to no one being able to come to an agreement or work something out in the middle these days. SMH
I keep a small piece of 1/4 copper tubing to pop the clips off , slips right over them .
Defective board. The connector should be down against the board before soldering, it was done standing off. Pushing the plug on popped the board traces off. You can see where they are soldered when popping the socket in and out, that space should not be possible.

Why do they put a PCB in an area that has vibration and gets hot. Car manufacturers love doing it as well. You are one hell of a guy putting up with customers who seem to like giving you a hard time !

That variety of board... maybe cheapest after the cardboard/bakelite compound, pertinax or whatever it was called... seen so many, many fine devices built with that, and the traces lift off with little force or heat stress.
I gave a ruud 2 pvc pipes. Model Ugrk-07emaes that initially inducer kicks on then locks out .it has 2 green solid lights

Yes, but you have to glue the socket with epoxy to the board, then solder ist.
Steve was right with replacing entire board as when the connector broke off the board it took part of the traces off the board
Looks like the board wasn't built right to begin with. That molex socket should have been seated against the PCB before the pins were soldered. All that was holding it was the traces on the back of the PCB, and not the surface of the board. It was doomed to eventually have the traces pushed right off the board when someone plugged in that socket hard enough.

Control boards aren’t made to last to long so it seems.
should have saved the old board Reflow all connections then Rebuild it, i bet it still would be usable then, as just needs those Pins reset and Reflowed solder, good as new then,as since its not that old of a Furnace the board could be fixed up as a replacement if needed when new board gives out,1 saves money and 2 saves on a trip getting a new board again.might can even use Parts off one board onto another component wise.Thats why saving old boards then Making a test Jig to test them once done ,more parts and more money saved.by both you and the Customers.

The pads are ripped from the board and traces broken. Nothing to solder to. Jumpers can be run but that's more work than one of those boards is worth.

What's going on with your main truck? We miss the rattletrap POS and seeing Miss Molly. If it was my furnace I would have soldered the connector back on and bridged any damaged traces, but I know there are liability issues when doing this for others.
Bet the electrician cause that connector to break that doesn't just happens for no reason

Alot of PCB boards are made in the "wrong" chinese factory...somebody didn't get enough food that day and soldered that connector on an empty stomach ...I was out on Halloween morning to...it was the exact same board....the blower fan relay shit the bed...literally caught fire fire department called and everything...to bad you cant post pics in the comments..it was a beauty!

Piss poor board quality when solder traces lift like that! If you can solder you could have fixed it BUT I'm sure your limited on that sort of thing for liability reasons. Just sucks something so simple condems the whole board .......smh

This bord is realy por quality, this solded parts need to be on board and not out of PCB... in my freetime i working on analog synth components and Arduino projects and from my view even some of the cheeapest Chinese components and 2 euro arduino imitation from Aliexpress is beter quality than this furnace PCB.
