That Goodman looked like a good install...not a lot of ugly and bundled up ducting, plumbing and electrical. The best part of this repair was getting the blower motor speeds on the right spade terminals. Some technicians have no idea about the heat transfer process I guess as A/C should always be on the high speed. Nice unit and a good replacement gas valve got put in vs. some retrofit off brand model. Customer will be so happy now and problem free but the good part is coming, in the summer they will likely notice how much better the A/C works thank you to Ted !
No worries about video length from the viewer end, they are always informative. BTW, I've been meaning to thank you. In a past video you walked into a room and noticed the ceiling vents were pointed in the wrong direction. I looked at mine in the downstairs den. They weren't pointed to the heat gain/loss parts of the room. I changed them to do so, and the difference was marked. The den is much more livable. Thanks again.
Well... glad I found this video. I just got my goodman single stage hooked up. I've had it in place for almost a year but finally finished retrofitting all connections and ductwork... Worked for a day then did exaxt same thing your dual stage did. Would fire, wouldn't fire. You confirmed my thought about the solenoid being stuck. DEFINITELY appreciate your videos!

Hi Ted, you question the operation of the Goodman 2 stage gas valve. Each Goodman board has 3 dip switches that control the gas valve function. It starts on high pressure for ignition then moves to low until dip switch programming is initiated. Also, my understanding of the blower motor specs for wiring is this; bk=hi , bl=med hi , or=med lo , rd= low , I believe your blue and orange wire assignments are incorrect , blue should be hi- heat and orange is low-heat.
I agree with you on mtr speed wires but I disagree on that furnace being a 2 stage furnace if it was it would have W1 and W2 control voltage inputs not just W ( yes a 2 speed can be set up with timing and no input from stat other then W1 and W2 being jumpered but this 40,000 BTU 80% furnace doesn't do that ) it would also have a 2 speed inducer mtr and it doesn't . I have seen multiple single stage furnaces use multi stage valves they buy them in bulk so as long as 24volts is applied to both coils it is a single stage what is exactly what we saw when he checked voltage to gas valve 24 between common and hi and low coils at fire up .
Before I retired I was in the HVAC trade for ten years and I still considered my self a rookie because there is so much more to learn. I was best on gas furnaces, I used to ask for them if I could problem shoot them. Between being financially stable and my company turning techs into sell sell sell, I retired. 👍

Not HVAC tech. Learned the sheet metal trade over 50 years ago. I was a "parts changer" 4 my home and a few friends. Oil burners only. I retired, moved 2 Florida and really learn and enjoy your video's.

those blue dip switches beside the t-stat terminals, control how the board controls the high and low fire. They come from the factory set on high fire only, you have to reset the switches, to get low fire. When set for two stage, they start on high fire, and then step down to low fire after about 10 seconds.
Nice video Ted. I've always been one to be heavily involved in DIY around the home and cars. But, I always stayed away from HVAC. Your videos show how much knowledge and skill is required to be good and not dangerous. Thanks for reaffirming my choice to always hire a professional.

I must've missed the flue motor start up on the 1st couple of times before the new gas valve. But after the reason I say that the induced motor was loud on start up. But I could be wrong. Good practice to replace gas valve no matter what if it sticks. I seen techs leave it and then run into BIG PROBLEMS later. No fires but gas smell and fd show up. So keep in mind people are in the house. Great video Ted, keep trucking kid.
Good job troubleshooting I enjoyed your videos very educational and I'm not even in the HVAC business I'm a license pool technician repairs with similarities to our pool heater, heat pumps etc.
This seems to be the exact model- GMP050-3 - that I have in my attic. Its 21 years old and looks virgin- never worked on. Worked perfect until the other morning when the main circ blower stopped running. I studied Ted's videos all day and then took a look at it. The unit fires up fine...but the circ blower won't start. Blower hand-spins nicely and the leads check out OK on VOM. So I've ordered a new control board and a new capacitor....even though both look fine under close visual inspection. Meanwhile, now I've learned about the heat changer problems with this family of furnaces. So- if I get the unit to run again properly with the new parts, I'll inspect the ht exchgr using the tricks Ted showed....and if it indicates suspicious, I'll replace the ht exchgr. Indeed, I may just do that anyway if the furnace runs good!
Sometimes you guys that ramble on and on are the ones that give the best tips. Even better when you have someone helping you. Let them do the camera work. I got a feeling this is what is wrong with mine.
Ted I'm not in the HVAC film but I absolutely love your videos and I have weren't a few things and my way of learning is your videos and I really appreciate all that you do for your customers you seem like a very nice guy and in my last video my Advent day one video I gave you a shout out so other people can go to your channel and who knows some of them might be in your area and could a company like yours and I just want to say thank you because now I know what to look for and know when somebody's trying to take me to the cleaners because you know how some untrustworthy companies treat female customers and thanks to your videos I'm more educated on HVAC so that doesn't happen

As a matter of fact, I've got the same problem going on at the office where I work at; and I've and I have reached out to some of my close friends who are also in trade and they have steered me wrong I've been having the issue with gas flow and I figured it was the flow meter.
Good video info. Thanks. I traced the similar intermittent gas valve problem to the bad 3 wire connector contact at the gas valve. Applied dielectric grease and fixed the intermittent problem.
I was going crazy trying to figure this out. And then... the "just tap on the gas valve" part showed and I tried it, POOF! Gas ignites! Thank you sir. Now I need to decide if I'm capable enough to replace it...😐
There's the dip switches (3 or 4 dips) on the control board are how you change the staging for heat, there's an auto, off and 5min delay for 2nd stage heat
Paper money has a very high cotton content for durability, so you could use your jeans, shirt, or jacket as well, but it wouldn't be quite as good without the wood pulp mixture. For newer techs, a fiver would work just as well, and for DIY's a dollar bill would do fine. lol
Nice to see that you actually checked the manifold pressure and adjusted it. Perhaps its redundant, however, I like to verify the heat rise across the exchanger just to be sure is does not exceed the name plate rating. Had that situation couple of times and had to reduce manifold pressure to just a LITTLE, but still in the permissible range.
After years of doing refrigeration, I've had the urge to get back into HVAC. Though, I've never worked residential, and many techs tell me it's hellish.
Good job and triple checking out the gas valve.. that’s what I suspected in the first place. But it’s always good to double and triple check your rule thumb measure twice cut once

Im not a super tech, but I always check the gas in and out on a valve replacement. They are sometimes higher than the furnace calls for. That will shorten the life of the heat exchanger and maybe go out on high temperature.
The delay in voltage there is just the meter being a little sluggish. Note the multiple lunatic readings while it puzzles out what range it should be in.
So from my knowledge on goodman, the gas valve is tied in with the high limits, (burner assembly and blower) the blower high limit usually goes bad on them and causes this issue

Thanks so much on tapping trick on a freezing day.. Same me big $ and time. I got 24 volts but no clicking on valve. Tapped it 10 times and flipped on/off 5 times. It fires right on.
Good mention, The manufacturers for some reason seem to be wrong with the extra medium, and medium-large fan speeds. A Rheem unit I installed came tagged with a warning label to not change them. I was going to call tech support but never did. I firmly believe high speed for cooling and low to medium for heat unless there is a humidity problem for cooling. Maybe they want the hot air to mix better and not stay on the ceiling?.
I had a similar problem with my Goodman gas furnace. My problem was water got in the vacuum line to the vacuum switch. I tested the voltage on the high side of the gas valve tested normal. The low side tested 0 voltage. Then I pulled the vacuum hose and water ran out of it and the port. Once drained the valve worked and furnace fired up.
Ted called it a "dollar bill" and I just dismissed it as a consequence of inflation. This is the first time I have seen actual inflation caught on camera. Maybe Ted is a magician?
I've had a failing igniter cause the fast ignition fail like that and the full failure to ignite. I would have though the igniter wouldn't even get jot enough to igniter the burner. In some ways I prefer electric heat but gas and propane heaters win because they can be run on a small generator if needed.
Okay, check this out just had a trane package gas unit installed. 1st start up on heat, lasted maybe an hour. Then quit. Dead! Called installers, had to waited a more than week for them to come and check. The guy could not make it run in heat, it would pop the fuse as soon as turn on power. He said, thought board was bad. Said did not have one but get with company see would warranty it ??? Then said would get a Call to reschedule. So got a call few days latter, said they woukd try warrenty the board, but they said that they could not get back to me and till 3 weeks later on December 1st. then a new guy shows up, has no board but said could go get one if needed? he looks at unit. He said after looking at it, it was not the board but the lines for the thermostat wires. That the the installers had ran the wires in the return plenum and by the heat exchanger, that let to the wire to contact in the heat exchanger and melted them. He ran temp wire off roof to doggie door to a temp thermostat. Said would have to run new wires. In attic etc. But the access is in a closet in a spare room that is full. So we have to empty closet and make room for him to make full repair. Also my wife and I have been sick with covid for 14 days still recovering. So told him we have to wait to clean room/ closet and rest of home before can let them in. Also then have to make an appointment with them that could make us wait two or more weeks! So we paid a lot of money for new unit and ducting. Only to get less than an hour of heat and wait more than a month to get a temporary fix! Now the AC Side did work well except the electric jumped almost double??? We were running four window units before 24/7 now this unit does not even run that much but yet still pay twice the electric??? So you tell me WTF???
Sounds like a dealer that has low or no experience and provides poor service to boot.... around here such a dealer would be "fired" and would no longer be able to represent the brand. Of course we are a non-distributor state and our rules may be a bit more stringent ..... if you live close by, I would be happy to come straighten out the install myself.
At 23:50, I disagree Ted. In HIGH HUMIDITY areas like yours, SLOW THE COOLING FAN DOWN. Get rid of the DREADED humidity FIRST! Temperature is NOT the primary pain. High humidity is. Put someone in a 90 degree room with only

In one month I've changed 3 of these gas valves under parts warranty one under parts and labor didn't even make it a year. This gas valve should be a recall. Inlivenina large city and all the other companies are also having to change this valve like crazy.
I know HVAC pros don't like the DIY crowd but after HVAC guy spending 5 hrs, replacing numerous parts "Guessing" what was wrong, left after unsuccessfully NOT fixing. After seeing another novice tap a gas valve my hubs got ours working! Been working like a champ since Nov up until now (March). It's doing same thing again. Ignitor comes on, but gas ports not firing up. Maybe replace the gas Valve again?? BTW HVAC company sent $890 bill! Something's burning but it's not our furnace!
36+ 4th generation tech been around it my entire life . Also 1 year of tech school ( to learn the correct ways to go along with all the field taught ways I already had ) factory York,Carrier,Trane ( junk ),Goodman care and Rheem also factory whirlpool, Ge , Maytag , Subzero , Bosch , wolf , Asko and on and on factory trained . Also trained in Commercial Ref .
those crap goodmans use a single speed inducer and the staging is 100% timer. 12 minute or lower delay depending on duty cycle. Can't drop back down to low fire. 2-stage is a waste without the 2-stage thermostat, can't get long gentle cycles on low. I disagree that cooling should always be on high and heat shouldn't. Maybe in your climate where 3 to 5 ton units are common, more north heating can need more airflow than cooling. Can have 60k heat needing 900 to 1000 cfm and 1.5 to 2 tons cooling. Should just be set to deliver proper CFM in all modes of operation, heck if heat needs to be on high and the a/c is small and needs lower speed , so be it.
Figured i should mention the black does not always go on the cool tap. I realize it’s a general rule of thumb however you have to look at the manual to see the cfm for each color. i’ve been to several dozen houses where the speed taps have been repositioned for the primary reason being the AC didn’t need the extra cfm.
Been doing this for over 20yrs and never came across that one yet. But I have come across electric heats stuck on, got there and temp in customers house was over 90°
Installed same furnace right before Christmas last year and it had a bad gas vlv on it straight from the factory and it was 5 o'clock on Christmas Eve lol
If you look closely you can see condensation has leaked down the chimney & pooled on the gas valve. There is a rusty pool of rust directly under the gas valve. I watch for it because I’ve seen it many times in northern Alberta. You can even just open the tabs on the top & replace the solenoid. Then you don’t even have to take off the burner manifold 😉
How do you go about replacing the solenoid. I have had two gas valves fail in a single year and I can't afford to keep replacing the gas valve whenever I want to warm up my house.
Blue is usually medium hi on the Goodman fan speeds. I saw you hooked blue onto the low heat terminal and the orange which is usually the lower speed on the high heat terminal. I think they may be crisscrossed

One day it would be interesting to let folks know which colored wires go to the thermostat and which ones from the thermostat go to the A/C condenser and the board. I have seen too many variations in HVAC channels which is the standard for them.

Did you ever have a issue when cleaning with Emory cloth ? I've been doing it 35+ and have never had a issue...

You can magnetize your tools by rubbing them one way with a strong magnet.

Turned out that it was the circ blower capacitor. Replaced and it fired right up!
Nope, this is a gmh80453an, it has the GMH pseudo 2 stage board and valve.
Never replace a heat exchanger in a 21 year old furnace, replace the furnace
Ted's using a 50$ bill to clean the flame sensor which is 50 times better than a 1$ bill. LOL
$1 bills are usually very worn out ragged and don't clean so well, best using shiny crisp new bill from bank :)

Paper money has a very high cotton content for durability, so you could use your jeans, shirt, or jacket as well, but it wouldn't be quite as good without the wood pulp mixture. For newer techs, a fiver would work just as well, and for DIY's a dollar bill would do fine. lol

I have the same problem every year.
Nice to see that you actually checked the manifold pressure and adjusted it. Perhaps its redundant, however, I like to verify the heat rise across the exchanger just to be sure is does not exceed the name plate rating. Had that situation couple of times and had to reduce manifold pressure to just a LITTLE, but still in the permissible range.

After years of doing refrigeration, I've had the urge to get back into HVAC. Though, I've never worked residential, and many techs tell me it's hellish.
I've been doing residential for over a decade now and I can tell you that some days suck...... really suck.

Im not a super tech, but I always check the gas in and out on a valve replacement. They are sometimes higher than the furnace calls for. That will shorten the life of the heat exchanger and maybe go out on high temperature.
The delay in voltage there is just the meter being a little sluggish. Note the multiple lunatic readings while it puzzles out what range it should be in.
I wonder if it has a settable 'time constant' for display damping.

So from my knowledge on goodman, the gas valve is tied in with the high limits, (burner assembly and blower) the blower high limit usually goes bad on them and causes this issue
It can but if there is 24 bolts on MV and igniter is bright red and there is gas pressure on the inlet side it should fire .
Yes.i agree.i found out the hard way. Have a couple extra gas valves because it took me a couple days to figure out the fan limit problem

Thanks so much on tapping trick on a freezing day.. Same me big $ and time. I got 24 volts but no clicking on valve. Tapped it 10 times and flipped on/off 5 times. It fires right on.

Good mention, The manufacturers for some reason seem to be wrong with the extra medium, and medium-large fan speeds. A Rheem unit I installed came tagged with a warning label to not change them. I was going to call tech support but never did. I firmly believe high speed for cooling and low to medium for heat unless there is a humidity problem for cooling. Maybe they want the hot air to mix better and not stay on the ceiling?.
I had a similar problem with my Goodman gas furnace. My problem was water got in the vacuum line to the vacuum switch. I tested the voltage on the high side of the gas valve tested normal. The low side tested 0 voltage. Then I pulled the vacuum hose and water ran out of it and the port. Once drained the valve worked and furnace fired up.

DeWalt makes a right angle attachment for a 1/4 inch driver. Works for this type of application.
its why I use Waze. You can see the route in full before you drive it and actually see the destination to make sure it's accurate.
I carry a small 1/4 socket set for the hard to get too screws works super good in most cases

I've had a failing igniter cause the fast ignition fail like that and the full failure to ignite. I would have though the igniter wouldn't even get jot enough to igniter the burner. In some ways I prefer electric heat but gas and propane heaters win because they can be run on a small generator if needed.

Okay, check this out just had a trane package gas unit installed. 1st start up on heat, lasted maybe an hour. Then quit. Dead! Called installers, had to waited a more than week for them to come and check. The guy could not make it run in heat, it would pop the fuse as soon as turn on power. He said, thought board was bad. Said did not have one but get with company see would warranty it ??? Then said would get a Call to reschedule. So got a call few days latter, said they woukd try warrenty the board, but they said that they could not get back to me and till 3 weeks later on December 1st. then a new guy shows up, has no board but said could go get one if needed? he looks at unit. He said after looking at it, it was not the board but the lines for the thermostat wires. That the the installers had ran the wires in the return plenum and by the heat exchanger, that let to the wire to contact in the heat exchanger and melted them. He ran temp wire off roof to doggie door to a temp thermostat. Said would have to run new wires. In attic etc. But the access is in a closet in a spare room that is full. So we have to empty closet and make room for him to make full repair. Also my wife and I have been sick with covid for 14 days still recovering. So told him we have to wait to clean room/ closet and rest of home before can let them in. Also then have to make an appointment with them that could make us wait two or more weeks! So we paid a lot of money for new unit and ducting. Only to get less than an hour of heat and wait more than a month to get a temporary fix! Now the AC Side did work well except the electric jumped almost double??? We were running four window units before 24/7 now this unit does not even run that much but yet still pay twice the electric??? So you tell me WTF???
Sounds like a dealer that has low or no experience and provides poor service to boot.... around here such a dealer would be "fired" and would no longer be able to represent the brand. Of course we are a non-distributor state and our rules may be a bit more stringent ..... if you live close by, I would be happy to come straighten out the install myself.

In one month I've changed 3 of these gas valves under parts warranty one under parts and labor didn't even make it a year. This gas valve should be a recall. Inlivenina large city and all the other companies are also having to change this valve like crazy.
I know HVAC pros don't like the DIY crowd but after HVAC guy spending 5 hrs, replacing numerous parts "Guessing" what was wrong, left after unsuccessfully NOT fixing. After seeing another novice tap a gas valve my hubs got ours working! Been working like a champ since Nov up until now (March). It's doing same thing again. Ignitor comes on, but gas ports not firing up. Maybe replace the gas Valve again?? BTW HVAC company sent $890 bill! Something's burning but it's not our furnace!

36+ 4th generation tech been around it my entire life . Also 1 year of tech school ( to learn the correct ways to go along with all the field taught ways I already had ) factory York,Carrier,Trane ( junk ),Goodman care and Rheem also factory whirlpool, Ge , Maytag , Subzero , Bosch , wolf , Asko and on and on factory trained . Also trained in Commercial Ref .

those crap goodmans use a single speed inducer and the staging is 100% timer. 12 minute or lower delay depending on duty cycle. Can't drop back down to low fire. 2-stage is a waste without the 2-stage thermostat, can't get long gentle cycles on low.
I disagree that cooling should always be on high and heat shouldn't. Maybe in your climate where 3 to 5 ton units are common, more north heating can need more airflow than cooling. Can have 60k heat needing 900 to 1000 cfm and 1.5 to 2 tons cooling.
Should just be set to deliver proper CFM in all modes of operation, heck if heat needs to be on high and the a/c is small and needs lower speed , so be it.
Figured i should mention the black does not always go on the cool tap. I realize it’s a general rule of thumb however you have to look at the manual to see the cfm for each color. i’ve been to several dozen houses where the speed taps have been repositioned for the primary reason being the AC didn’t need the extra cfm.

Been doing this for over 20yrs and never came across that one yet. But I have come across electric heats stuck on, got there and temp in customers house was over 90°
Installed same furnace right before Christmas last year and it had a bad gas vlv on it straight from the factory and it was 5 o'clock on Christmas Eve lol
Had a york a few years ago that had a bad gas valve and pressure switch right out of the box. We stopped selling them after that nonsense
If you look closely you can see condensation has leaked down the chimney & pooled on the gas valve. There is a rusty pool of rust directly under the gas valve. I watch for it because I’ve seen it many times in northern Alberta. You can even just open the tabs on the top
& replace the solenoid. Then you don’t even have to take off the burner manifold 😉
How do you go about replacing the solenoid. I have had two gas valves fail in a single year and I can't afford to keep replacing the gas valve whenever I want to warm up my house.

Blue is usually medium hi on the Goodman fan speeds. I saw you hooked blue onto the low heat terminal and the orange which is usually the lower speed on the high heat terminal. I think they may be crisscrossed

One day it would be interesting to let folks know which colored wires go to the thermostat and which ones from the thermostat go to the A/C condenser and the board. I have seen too many variations in HVAC channels which is the standard for them.
