  • It’s the 1980’s and Canon was riding high on their with their FD line of lenses. With hobbyists loving the convenience and pros demanding greater performance from these zooms, in April 1981 Canon introduced the 35-105 f/3.5 NFD.
    Could this zoom have the needed aberration control at wide-angles while still rendering the sharp and beautiful imagery Canon lenses are renowned for?

      @@studiotrejo3047 I'm blown away by this lens. I have decided to sell of most of my collection of vintage zooms but I liked this lens so much I actually got a second copy :D The image quality is great and yet distinctly vintage. I actually really like I smoothly it operates with me being able to adjust the focal length with the lightest touch. It's a touch too soft for my liking at 35mm at full frame but I shoot with it mostly on APS-C crop so it doesn't bother me. The lens I got to complement it in case I need to go a bit wider is another interesting one. Tamron 24-48 f3.5-3.8. I have the MD 35-70 f3.5 with macro and 75-150 f4 also... 2 copies each! Apparently Leitz were so impressed with them they had them relabled and sold as Leica lenses. I tested the 35-70 against the Canon FD 35-105, and I think it's a bit sharper... but the Canon makes up for it with a longer focal length. The 75-150 f4 is comparable to my 70 - 200 Canon FD L lens in sharpness.

    Very nice review, which got me to buy this lens. However this lens isn’t parfocal at all, at f22 it’s kinda okay, but wide open at f3,5 you have to refocus completely. Maybe it’s just my unit or maybe it’s because I have it adapted to an ef mount (with a glass adapter), but if you’re considering buying this lens, keep this in mind.

    • @studiotrejo3047
      @studiotrejo3047  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you for your comment, it might be the unit and or the adapter. As far as the tests I conducted on my personal copy it does hold it's focus as your zooming at any focal length/aperture. One thing you might try is zooming in to your subject focusing then zooming out. Once those two points are established the lens does not loose focus, so you can zoom it in and out and the focus should stay the same. Hopefully that helps. Thanks for watching!

    Vintage lenses are mostly connected with CA. Remember, that the film used in the cameras back then has different layers. So the focus point of each wave length is a 3D- dependent thing. Digital sensors are 2D mostly, so some of the wave length could not reach their original focus point. Another point is, that digital lenses normally contain an dedicated internal chip with image correction algorithms for this specific lens. Under this circumstances this lens is very good.

      this is wrong on so many levels. There is a considerable lack of understanding when it comes to the physics of light, photographic film and digital sensors. These lenses are soft because the optics aren't nearly as they're refined as they are today.

    So I'm in a tough spot and have decided to likely sell my FD SSC Primes.. I don't think I've really almost ever used my 100 mm because I don't shoot much more. I have an FS-100 and its still a really awesome camera . I recognize that even iphones now have more dynamic range but they sure dont have the glass ( which people out of the loop are ignorant to ) but part of why I got it was to have the framing of growing up watching movies... I had an AF-100 also a BEAUTIFUL camera but in M 4/3 . I know that the FS finally went with built in ND which id love to have but anyway. Funny thing is, at least when it comes to truly attaining a film like color space one of my favorite prime lenses is like a $30. I also have a set of Rokkors which I have compared directly to FD and the biggest difference was how they were rendering the color red... which was truly interesting to see because usually its more subtle. When I got my primes of FD I said oh I should also get a zoom lens ( especially since this has a nice large 72mm filter ) I probably paid like 40 bucks for it? very clean glass near mint... Like my primes from Japan that are mint. Bought some nice blooming filters ( not cheap ) but also realized its truly a cheap alternative to the FS-100 kit lens which I believe actually goes to 200m and has the advantage of power but is also like a $200+ lens. But anyway, the tests I have done with the lens in the video? Remind me of a Meteor lens from a Krasnagorsk thats also a large 72mm and has a more cinematic quality likely just the science of the parabola distance similar to actual cinema lenses. When I've put a full mattebox on this thing or shot naked ( without a booster ) some of the stuff I was shooting indoors in rainy light looked honestly like 35mm film. It reminded me of Goonies cinematography. Maybe by now or at some point digital will fully takeover in its nuances and people will see certain color as "old" but I prefer 35mm film so thats the look I chase. Pretty amazing... Same with my AF-100 and this FS-100 I've been able to produce images that look the same to like an Arri C11. But I took this lens out yesterday because I said... I can make a good few hundred bucks on my primes but maybe I'll at least keep the 35-105mm went out shooting some leaves... my cat... in the preset cinema negative profile and ... wow.. obviously we can split hairs all day but sometimes you just hit that plateau of something being "just right"... Similar to how as nice as my FD SSCs are I don't think they quite had the color of a cheaper one... I think maybe they have been hyped up a bit over the years and the cost has driven up. But obviously art is subjective.... This lens also works great with the FS-100 ( thats notoriously great in low light ) if you set it on 30db and want a little noise... it becomes this awesome gritty looking 35mm film. The colors just work really well I think with the Sony. I still miss my Panasonic AF-100 ( at this point now it would have been cheap enough to keep ) and colors but it's nice to make the images I can with bargain glass though I haven't been shooting as much as I'd like to. Usually I do use a cheap speed booster on my FDs ( you really need to spend like hundreds for one to not take away from the lens ) esp with an F 3.5 but taking the lens out naked yesterday afternoon I was perfectly satisfied. and said alright I'll keep this one. Optics and filtration are everything... I shot video of a rabid fox on my other camera and always get compliments ( was my AF-100 ) .. was just a long vivitar minolta lens and ND filter. I love old long lenses though.. the best character and most cinematic dof. like yeah it would be amazing if my camera had the latitude of a black magic with the Super 35 frame but it definitely still gets it plenty. And as superior as a prime lens is? You could totally use this lens ( a speed booster if you really need to go wider than 35 ) for an entire film and look beautiful then not worry about consistency. Of course it doesn't have the zoom range of a Kubrick film but so what.. I don't even think I realized mine was parfocal because usually im not doing a "zoom shot" im just changing focal length. The macro is handy too... not the closest of the close but I don't have a still camera ( the AF-100 had a still button I believe just like my little 60p palmcorder ) So usually for like ebay listings I use the macro on this lens and take screen grabs of the video for ebay items and usually blow other listings out of the water ha . It is cool to see footage though in a different place and camera to change perspective how ... when you see it you go " oh i want this lens" but anyway...

    Great video! I was just wondering - if you were to attach a variable ND screw-on filter to the front of the lens (referencing your video around the 4:00 mark), would that be an issue? Because the way I see it, the entire focus ring including the whole front element turns when you rack focus. So I think that might produce some unwanted vignetting with the addition of a variable ND filter as it turns also while you rack focus?

    • @studiotrejo3047
      @studiotrejo3047  Рік тому

      Hello! Thank you for watching! That’s a great observation. The front element/focus cylinder does rotate when you focus. The vignetting is not usually the problem, it’s any kind of color cast the ND could give you as it rotates. I use a Tiffen ND and I have noticed a color shift when I rack focus from minimum to infinity. It looks like cool tones to a warm tone or vice versa. This normally happens with a complete rack and it may not happen with other brands of NDs. That said, many get around this or won’t even notice it when using a matte box that is not clamped to the lens instead they are clamped to the rods. The lens focus can move freely with filters secured at the matte box vs being screwed onto the lens.
      Just as a side note the color cast is coming from the filter and not the lens. The large movement in focus is when it’s most noticed.
      I hope this helps!

    Excellent video with great lighting. I just got the SMC Pentax A 35-105mm f3.5 (The Stack of Primes) which is another great 35-105mm lens. It too seems to be parfocal or at least very close to parfocal at 1.5 meters. I wonder which one has better optics? Have you tried the SMC Pentax A 35-105mm f3.5? Also, is the Canon Nfd 35-105mm parfocal for any distance shorter than 1.5 meters (in its macro mode)?

      @studiotrejo3047  Рік тому

      Thank you for watching! No I have not had the pleasure of using the Pentax A 35-105. I'll keep my eye out for it. As far as the Canon, it does not keep it's par focal qualities in MACRO mode since you are stuck on 35mm to use it. Once in that mode the zoom turns into a focus ring. Hope that makes sense.

    Studio Trejo thanks so much for this detailed review, it's pretty well researched and well presented. I'm looking to pair this lens on mu BMPCC k4. fPlease help me, many of my vintage lenses have scruffs on the body and of course some black paint has disappeared leaving white blotches and the rubber also has become sticky. How can I get that shiny look you have on your lenses?

      @studiotrejo3047  2 роки тому

      Thank you for watching! I have seen some examples of this lens paired with a BMPCC 4k and it looks great! I'm sure you will enjoy it. As far as scuffs on the body of lenses and chipped paint, there isn't much you can do about that. Once the pint is off it's off but I have seen people use a black Sharpie marker to kind of hide the chipping or scratches on the black paint. It works ok but not great. The rubber being sticky can be fixed by wiping it with a cloth and a little alcohol. This can remove the residue but it might also remove some of the shine so be careful. In the end, if the glass is clean then your optics are good. Cheers!

    I got this lens for 13€ on Ebay, I use it on Canon film camera, Canon FF digital and Olympus MFT, it performs well, a little too soft at 105 3.5 but give great image with good sharpness, some CA and vignetting on FF (and can only be use for macro as infinite focus is not possible) on 35mm film and Digital but very good on mirrorless.
    I also have it's EF 35-105 3.5-4.5 EF (the 1st one derived from the FD), very similar in terms of quality and a little bit sharper at 105 wide open than this old guy.
    Old Canon lenses FD prior to 1982 (and the release of the 1st "L" series) and the EF made from the FD designs are usually great if not amazing lenses for their time.
    Before the "L" vs "normal" series, Canon lenses pro/non pro were very close in terms of built quality and image. Now, we have the excellent "L" and average/less than average "normal" lenses.
    And it's a shame some 40+ years "standard" lenses are better than today's ones.

    Do you have issues using variable nd filters with this rotating front barrel as you focus? Seems like there would be a problem.

    • @studiotrejo3047
      @studiotrejo3047  Рік тому +1

      I use Tiffen filters and I have seen color shifts when the front rotates. So in mid recording if you do a focus pull you may see a shift. Most shifts happen when there is an extreme focus pull. But this may also depend on the filter itself.

    You would suggest this one of 35-70mm F4?

    • @studiotrejo3047
      @studiotrejo3047  3 роки тому

      Hey thanks for watching! I personally have not tried the 35-70 f/4 but the word on the street is that the 35-70 is a metal body that can focus down to .5 mt or 1.5 ft. without hitting a macro switch. That in itself is a great feature. I would consider the 35-105 for the f3.5 brightness and the extra reach of 105mm which is very useful. Let me know what you decide to go with. Cheers!

    • @studiotrejo3047
      @studiotrejo3047  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Thank you fro watching! eon m50 is an APSC camera which means this lens will look like more of a 52-158mm which is more of a zoom lens than a wide angle. You would also need to purchase an adapter for it work on the eon M50. With all that said I don't see why you couldn't use it if you had an adapter and were ok with the focal length. Hope this helps! Cheers!

    Do you think the vivitar 28-105mm 2.8-3.8 is better ?

    • @studiotrejo3047
      @studiotrejo3047  2 місяці тому +1

      That’s a great question since I have both lenses. Both a great but do different things.
      The 35-105 is a constant 3.5 regardless of where you are in the zoom range.
      The 28-105 has a variable aperture and therefore darkens to a 3.8 when zooming in.
      The darkening isn’t that dark considering you are starting at 2.8.
      The question is would you want to shoot at 28mm? Do you mind the push pull design of the 28-105? Photographers won’t mind but videographers might.
      I love them both but I use them differently in my workflow.
      I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

      At 35mm there is distortion you can see it at 3:15 in the video. If your using it for photos it can be corrected easily in post, if your using it for video it can be but not as easily. It’s not completely unnoticeable and I would leave it to your taste. Thank you for watching!

      @studiotrejo3047  Рік тому

      Hey thanks for writing! I would look at 2 main things: first the condition of the lens. Does it seem in poor shape? Does it sound like parts are moving around inside? What focal length is it struggling to reach infinity?
      Second: check the adapter. Make sure there is no play on the adapter.
      What camera are you shooting it on? Full frame, APSc?

      @@pkonttinen Komodo! Cool! No macro mode? That's interesting. It's a two touch version? Not the push pull right?
      Either way the only guess I could have even though I don't have this lens is the adapter. Dumb adapters are usually fine but adapters with glass in them like a focal reducer can affect infinity focus. Is that what you are using?

    is there also a push pull zoom version of this lens?

    • @studiotrejo3047
      @studiotrejo3047  3 роки тому

      Hello thank you for your question. Yes there is a push pull version of this lens the 35-105 3.5-4.5 FD zoom. It's smaller with upgraded optics so you can get "macro" like distances throughout the zoom range vs only getting it at 35mm on the lens I reviewed. One thing to keep in mind is that the push pull version is a variable aperture zoom lens f3.5-4.5 so as you zoom in your exposure will darken, unlike the lens I reviewed were the aperture is constant.
      Hope this helps and thank you for watching.

      @@siddhantmogaveera Great question! For screw on ND's I can only speak to the brand I own which is Tiffen ND's. When the focus barrel rotates you may see a small color shift from a warm tone to a cool tone. Again my only experience is with the Tiffen ND's so other brands may not have this issue. Nikon has a great reputation for it's glass that I could spend years reviewing them. Who knows if the 35-70 comes across my desk I may review it. Thank you for making me aware of it.
