Carbon fiber can easily transmit electricity so you likely have stray current issues with the hood, also long term it can be enough to cause corrosion issues in systems on the sled. Stuff like connectors, inside instruments. You could start isolating stuff like your instrument cluster panel from the rest of the hood. It can also in the end cause running issues due to possible effects on the ECM. The carbon plane and sail boat world has wrestled with issue. I have enough first hand experience with Carbon fiber aerobatic airplanes to make me want to cry.
Your videos on CF have seriously inspired me to re-visit making some CF parts for my old iron (2005 RMK 700). Making the mold was the most intimidating part and you made it look pretty easy. Headlight pod delete/led replacement should be good for 5lb, airbox shelf should be good for ~3lb. The hood itself is a huge, hard part to make, but would be good for ~20lb. These old fiberglass hoods are heavy! I'd even thought about doing a rear dash/gas tank trim piece, probably 3-4lb stock. As it is this year I'm running half oil tank and half fuel tank for weight savings. Just have to be careful about it touching anything aluminum to prevent corrosion.
There is a spray product designed for snow blowers that keeps the snow from sticking. It makes a huge difference when sprayed on a skid frame to prevent ice and snow build up
Couple things... #1. Jerry is going to hate that can! #2. That tunnel cut has me singing "fat guy in a little coat" :D Can't wait to see that thing rip on a super deep day, show the short track guys what the 175 can do!
This video is what I was waiting for, watching u do the carbon fiber your self was very interesting, the shop and being able to film builds and fixing through out the season will be awesome.... keep em coming....
cool sled. but WHY the small gastank???? when you still need to bring gas with you. Put on a larger tank and add gastank foam inside to prevent slouching. that is a much more convenient solution. Feels like the classic saving weight to then ad weight back in a different shape. Gas on your back or on the tunnel is still gas weight. just in a more inconvenient placement.
I'm glad you got it working. This is one of the reasons I don't mod out a sled like this to many headaches but hope it works and we get to see the insane vids u put out with this sled.
Lots of work! nice job on the mod, that weight savings is crazy and the carbon work looks wild! as far as cans go, at least the diamond s,RPM and push industries titanium quiet muffs are not that loud. loud cans are the worst.
That is a sick sled... sweet build Matt.... but the only thing I question VERY MUCH after watching you ride for years now is that fuel tank.... when doing a mod build you have to look at pros and cons to every mod.... and i believe you in particular will be dealing with a lot more cons with that small of a tank... maybe a custom low profile tank that holds at least factory amount of fuel... I only say this because I have watched a ton of your vids where you are riding back to your truck on fumes... now you have less than half the fuel on board. I don't see that working out for your ride style... Just a thought buddy. Can't wait to see it on the mountain.... Merry Xmas and happy new year to you and yours Matt... From my damn cold, very snowy, slightly lob-sided, rustic, undersized igloo on the mountain in grande cache alberta D. P.S.... WHERE'S WALDO??? (SORRY , WHERE'S THE JERRY'S??)...LOL
The stock tank is 36 so it’s over half to be fair. A 20 litres fuel bag will put me over stock capacity and then roll up and out of the way when I dump it in. Best of both worlds in my opinion. This is a purpose built sled for only deep days. I don’t plan to ride it that often.
I love the positive attitude: "It's probably gonna break. It'll be fun!" 🤣 Also massively impressive to be able to make that hood starting from 0 in just one summer.
Beautiful. Love the idea of near stock motor with all the weight loss. Not crazy about can sound. Love the carbon hood. Need a Al or Ti or Pt or Ag mounting plate for the DESS. Oh it looks great too. Other than that butchered hole for the DESS. I would def have made a template for the hood holes :).
A wild build for sure. Curious how it goes in the real world min-maxing the power & track length to weight ratio. May run pretty hot on the trail just getting back to the powder. Or bend/break stuff landing from a good jump. But if she holds, could be a total rocket in the steep n deep!
Is it possible to run a firm carbon flat seat to get rid of seat foam? Gonna be uncomfortable but could save another lb especially if the foam took in water
@@MuskokaFreerider im a car guy and i have seen this kind of problem when a naked positive wire come in contact with carbon fiber, complete short and blown fuses 😅
When I found out that you were making carbon fiber parts I was going to tell you that carbon fiber is conductive, but I forgot. me and my colleagues found this out the hard way because we did a custom job on a side-by-side and made a carbon fiber dashboard, and when we tried to start it, it didn’t start so we had to have the stock dashboard in because of the carbon fiber being conductive
Sic sled build! Just incase I don't win the contest ..I got me 2 newer sleds ..maybe if my skills improve I'll come find you and the Jerry's! Merry Christmas to you and everyone els ripping the season 🤘😎
we get an Instagram tease of the sled on the snow and then the build video comes out with no snow!!! Matt please don't start getting into producing click bait videos. Love your channel way too much for that to start. Wonder what this thing looks like on the truck deck, does it even fit? Need more pow videos, get this sled on the mountain!!!!! Keep it up Matt!!!

I can see the carbon fibre causing electrical gremlins because its an actual conductor vs plastic panels which are obvious insulators. A quick google search just confirmed it: yup, its a conductor and sounds like a good one at that.
When you mount the key again, maybe try to center it more on the console. I hit my knee on my key every once in a while when things get rowdy and it sucks when the engine cuts out. Wish Skidoo would have put the key centered on the console from the factory.
Biggest secret release- small bottle of n2 dry spray directly into the clutch housing, during a big climb start spraying 3/4 of your climb. You'll save belts and keep them clutches cold
Just one stewpid question…. Considering how most of the riding in the mountains has the front end pointed up in the air, wouldn’t it be prudent to drill some holes for airflow in the belly pan?
@ after i wrote this i thought about excessive snow in the belt and slippage. Last year too much snow on my belt caused excessive slipping in reverse and when the belt finally grabbed it threw the sled backwards and the handlebar broke my rib. Of course this year I’m not allowed a sled according to the wife a a result of the rib.
Sick build man! I really think no light at all isnt worth it though, wouldnt a single row light bar work i wonder? Maybe like less than 1 lb or so , but not just since u guys usually return after dark bit also for showing others where you are😀
