I think the most important when waking up early is to be able to have 7 to 9 hours of sleep : i used to wake up at 4 am when i was doing my phd. Now i'm waking up around 5:30, because I do want to see my friends a little more, and most of them are only available in the evening, because of their works. Aligning our lifestyle on our priorities and daily needs is certainly important ❤ congratulations on achieving the challenge!
Minimalist Mother in the UK here -- these videos are great, and I appreciate you taking the time to do it and share your findings. What I found most enlighening was that you talked about the positive feelings that come from waking up in a positive way. I think this can be applied no matter what time of day you're waking up - getting away from the bed, the positive pose, doing something you love in the morning - those are the best take-aways!
I used to have a really long commute and had to get up very early. I did actually get up extra early to get some yoga in before spending so much time in transit and one of my favourite tools was a daylight alarm. There's lots of different brands out there but they mimic the sunrise so you wake up in your shallow sleep phase instead of an REM / deep sleep phase which is usually the reason for feeling tired upon waking. There's also settings for birdsong which gradually increases or other sounds, radio etc but the light itself is already doing the job to wake you up without even needing an audible alarm! They can also be set in reverse for sunset before going to bed. Couldn't recommend this enough!
Wonderful video as always, Aki. I really appreciated your "fun and happy" approach to waking up so early, rather than thinking of it as simply being a productivity hack. I've always cherished early morning time, though I tend to time my waking with the sunrise, so it varies according to the season :)
Konnichiwa!!! I also used to wake up early and go to the gym. I love exercising and the group I exercise with. Lately I lost my mojo... felt unhappy and now I spent time on social media at night... I feel even more unmotivated now and worse I can't seem to fall asleep before midnight. After seeing your happy video, I feel motivated to go back to my old routine of waking up early at 5 am, go to the gym, nourish my body, mind and soul properly in the morning. I used to love preparing healthy breakfast, reading one page of my favorite book of quotes, and do my meditation. Now I don't do any of that, I feel so sad and my feelings are heavy by watching and reading bad news at night. I realized I can do better! Thank you Samurai Matcha! Today in May 2023. I'll be back in June and let you know how it goes. :)
Good luck! You are very inspiring, @MelissaDeleen! I bet we can all think of things we used to do that made us feel better....but somehow we stopped doing them. I hope we are all inspired to start doing something good for ourselves! P.S. I stopped watching or reading or listening to the news a couple of years ago, and it has made a huge positive difference in my life. 🙂
I have a father who has been probably one the most productive people I have ever known. One his habits has always been getting up between 4 and 4.30, in which he would exercise and do other things before the house is disturbed. He is close to 80. The FEW times I have done it , it REALLY is like a miracle hour. My issue is that I have not been able to go to bed before 10.30/11...but I still get up at 5 to get us ready for school/work. I must prioritise this for my health. Thanks for this video. I will challenge myself.
I go to bed between 01.00 and 02.00 a.m.... I wake up at 07.00 and I'm full of energy... I have a short power nap in the afternoon when I have time... I'm 74 years old... 🙂

You joined my world! My job starts early, and I have a pet, so it's up between 4 and 4:30 to get both our days going. It is a peaceful commute, and on my days off I take my coffee out on the porch to listen to the birds and commune with the opossums.
It’s not about making your day longer but it’s about using a time of day that is easier to be more productive-mornings are quieter and people tend to have more energy after waking up so it leads to a more productive day by waking up early.
@Sam Lindsay in my city in the Summer after 9 pm is the only moment you can go out side of your home, even the children. Before that time you cant eat in any restaurant, the pubs open at 12. The life is very different in each countrie. Till 1am or more you listen the screams of the children playing and the people chatting in the street.
Thank you so much for sharing details and your journey of joining 4am. I have started this new routine for believing in benefiting a lot but did not know how to deal with my emotions for loosing my social life at night life
A very motivating video. Even if we can’t keep these hours, we can still learn from this and try to maximize the morning time we do have. Thank you. This was fun to watch!
Dear, thank you for your lovely video! Waking up early (especially if you have children) is not easy but it is soooo worth it! What helped me was to know my WHY? Why I want to wake up earlier than my family? :-) Greetings from Atlanta City! Pavlina
I've been getting up at 4:30 AM for over a year and a half now. The main reason for getting up early originally was to write for a while in the morning; now I've added "learn Spanish on Duolingo" to my morning routine. And, thanks to you, I'm also cleaning my toilet first thing in the morning. The one thing I haven't managed to be happy to do in the morning is exercise. I really need to work that in, in a good way. What I've noticed lately: when it's time to go to bed, IT'S TIME TO GO TO BED. I've always been someone who goes to bed late, gets up early, but no more. Now sometimes I'm tired enough at 7:30 or 8 or 8:30. And...weirdly enough...when I go to sleep hard and fast at those times, I'm waking up within an hour or two, wondering what time it is, and only an hour or two have passed! I still have the rest of the night to sleep! I wonder what would happen if I actually *would* get up at 10:30 and stay up until the next night's sleep. Could I get by on an hour or two of sleep? Hunger: I'm on keto. I don't get hungry anymore. You're eating carbs. Carbs make you hungrier. If you don't want to bother with getting hungry in the morning, cut out sugars and grains (and rice is a grain). **edit: I do sleep in on the weekends and let my body get all the sleep it wants until I wake up. During the week I plug in the phone (my alarm clock) on an outlet across the room from my bed, so that I have to get up to turn off the alarm. By then I'm already cold enough that I just stay up and don't get tempted to go back to bed. Right away I make my bed and make my coffee, write, learn Spanish, and go on with my day. I may try cranking the time back to 4 AM for a while, just to see how that affects me.
Regarding waking up after a couple of hours in bed, you might want to look into biphasic sleep. Katie Hunt wrote an interesting article on CNN's website titled "How our ancestors used to sleep can help the sleep-deprived today". In a nutshell, until the industrial revolution, humans used to go to bed at sundown and get up at sunrise, which was a span of 8 to 12 hours or so. People would go to bed and wake up after about four hours. In the cities, they had nocturnal pubs and coffee houses so that people could go and visit with each other for a couple of hours before heading back home to go back to bed. This biphasic sleep also allowed hunter gatherers to rotate shifts to watch out for a predators. But when the big machines of industrialism moved in, I guess they decided they could squeeze more work hours out of us if we only slept a straight eight. But it isn't normal for us.
Finding your motivation makes it easier. I used to get woken up at 4am by my hedgehog demanding breakfast. I really enjoyed having a couple of hours before work to play with her. The problem was she slept all day and didn’t wake up until 9 pm so I was up until midnight most nights playing with her as well. Looking back I’m not sure how I survived those four years but the memories still make me smile.
Great video. You are correct about the first week as the hardest. I decided to switch my diet/eating habits and I must admit day 3 through day 7 SUCKED. I am a firmer believer that everyone needs some suck in your life that when the time comes you will handle it better and probably thrive. I will try the 30 day challenge in the next two months. I'm hoping that Matcha will give me the needed energy. LOL
Wonderful video - you're an inspiration! I've always struggled with getting up earlier but you've inspired me to give it a serious go. The WHY is definitely the key!
I usually wake up at 7AM; now you have motivated me to try for 5:00AM; wonder how long I'll last, lol. It's so much easier in Spring/Summer because there is so much light. I don't know if I could do it in the winter. My favorite thing to do is sleep.
Konnichiwa aki San !! I was having a stressful day but when I opened my yt, I saw your notification and I had a instant happy mood!! arigato for posting, you don't know how eagerly I wait for your video
I woke up at 4am for more than a year. maybe two year. I used to sit alone first thing and drink filtered coffee. oh it was wonderful. sadly many years later i have weird sleeping difficulty. basically if I went to bed at 10 and the alarms at 5. I wake at 1:30 sharp as a whistle.
Thank you for this video, あき さん. I always like thinking of more ways to improve my schedule. I wake up at 5 am no matter what I do, no matter how many hours I have slept, etc. So I try to go to bed by 10 pm. I have never tried 4 am, but 5 gives you plenty of time to do a lot of things.
A loud coffee-maker next to my bed with the timer set at 3:55 would be the only thing I could count on, when I want to wake up at 4 or 5 every morning ... I like getting up early, actually. But where I live, summer nights are quite bright and winter days are so dark. 4 AM is beautiful in summer, but in winter -- at 10 AM it's still not bright, we don't see a ray of sun for weeks sometimes. So at 10 AM I feel like it's time to get back to sleep, it's cold and dark and that won't change much during the day at all :D
I also live in a location like that. I love getting up early but it does take so long in the winter for the day to start when you're up at 4-5am. I light candles and potter around. I enjoy the stillness of those winter mornings compared to these light filled mornings of the summer that have a different kind of magic to them.
@@HennaHuu true ... I enjoy silence of a dark night too. I have even switched from being up in a daytime to being up all night and going to sleep at 7 AM, when I was free to do that.
so insightful! practical, useful information and excellent tips from your personal journey. i am so glad i came across this video! thank you for posting :)
Congratulations. But the thing is if you want to wake up early you should go for a previous day sleep little earlier. Definitely you are a role model for millions. Hats off.
I was happy to see you upload a vid like this because I recently got a new job in the past few weeks that requires me wake up at 4am everyday. At first, the idea of waking up that early was almost the deal-breaker for not taking the job, but I decided to give it a chance!! A lot of what you said you learned from your experience is also true for me! The morning fresh air, seeing the sun rise, driving around when it's dark and no one's around is all so nice!! My days is doubled definitely (even if I do take a small nap in the mid morning) and I have had energy most of the time to do things I need and want to during the day after work and have gotten a lot done for current projects of mine! While I can't do walks on my morning time constraint, I feel like I should re-incorporate a matcha drink and/or some stretches, so thank you for the inspiration!!! Keep being you, Aki!!
Was one of the best life choices I made, only second to quitting smoking and drinking. Since now I live in my car, it gets too difficult in subzero temperatures but looking to star again as it is getting warmer. The key is not to bring yourself down over missed days. It's been 2 months since I stopped getting up, but I know how great my life became when I was. Do a little exercise and change your diet, form new habits, and throw out the old ones. 💪

recently I tried to push my waking up time from 6.00 to 5.45 and it is not easy. but I love the quietness of the morning hours. my partner wakes up after 8.00 so I have two hours only for myself - meditation, qi qong, yoga, sometimes riding a bike. :)
@04:38 part of the hunger is your brain saying "this wake up time does not align with my inner clock, and I need more calories to function, to offset the difference between my internal clock needs and when you are asking me to function" It sounds like waking up at 5 am aligns perfectly with your inner clock/circadian rythm. 4 am does not sound like it is ideal for your circadian rhythm. If you are occasionally still sleepy/needing to snack after a couple of weeks, your body is asking politely "can we please go back to what makes Brain happy?" Thank you so much for sharing your experience, and both the way you chose to reframe your mental outset as well as where you struggled. 😊
Gracias nuevamente 🌹
Thank you for sharing your experience I learned a lot from you,And as A muslim we also must wake up early for Fajir prayer and in my country Oman its around between 4 to 5 Allah who created us Knows what is best for us.
Hai Aki, I discovered your channel a few days ago and I really enjoy watching your videos, they bring me a little moment of peace and joy during my much cherished kid-free coffee time. I loved being an early bird, you can get so much done in the morning and once you're done you still have the entire day ahead of you. 😊Also you've inspired me to look differently at my belongings and though I doubt I will ever reach the point of becoming an actual minimalist I am definitely going to reduce the amount of stuff I own and be more appreciative of the things I do choose to keep. 🥰
4 am, the time when I go to bed...darn ! I need to change that definitely; you motivated me greatly ? i appreciate a lot who you are and your way of seeing life. Blessings from France.
Thank you for so good mood and joy you are sharing all the time, this feeling is going from you frim inside. Keep going this path, you are great person! 😊
Your "wake up pose" reminds me of a very similar pose I was taught by my mother called the "victory pose". You stand tall, ball up both your hands, and stretch your arms out so your body makes a Y shape, the same pose most people do after they accomplish something. I was taught this pose to combat depression and anxiety. There's a related pose of sorts that I was also taught for when you're feeling in a rut, and that's to take a clean chopstick or similar, hold it horizontally like a dog with a stick, and try to hold it with your teeth as far back as you can so your cheeks are pulled into an odd sort of smile. Turns out our brains are horrible at figuring out reality from imagination, which is why visualization works so tremendously well, and likewise by triggering these physical poses the brain thinks something is happening and tends to manifest emotion to go with it. It's odd how our brains do that.
I used to be the first one to get on the school bus and last one off of it. My bus would pick me up at 6:30 AM (I had an hour and a half bus ride, as it was a private school that went into various towns to pick kids up, and I lived the furthest away). Therefore, at age 7, I woke up at 5:30 AM. Ever since, even at 39, I still wake up at this time. I don't need an alarm clock. My body just does it. I feel like I get so much more done waking at that time. When people say to me that they struggle to wake in the morning, I don't really understand, since I established this waking habit so early on in my life. I am a happy person. I think it has more to do with how I choose to live my life, rather than waking up early though. You have made a lot of great habits and I am glad that you did well in this experiment. Will you continue to wake at 4 AM or go back to a later time to wake?
Thank you from Australia for another happy video ❤ Thanks to you, I now have a mattress on the floor and a whole new early morning routine - not quite 4am though 😅 I look forward to going to sleep AND to waking up 🙌 I used to dread both ❤
I normally get up at 6 but have been trying to get up 15 mins earlier every day for the last week so I can be up by 5. Now that it’s warm out and my garden is starting I can get so much more done with an extra hour in the morning 🌱💚👏🏼ありがとうございます。がんばります
I prefer to wake up when the sun rises or when I wake up without the alarm clock. Lately I've also been waking up at 4 am but I didn't want to! I had gone to bed at 10:30 pm or later so I hadn't slept enough.
I’m trying this along with listening to 432Hz whilst sleeping I’ve tried the 432Hz already on its own and I can’t prove that it’s the reason but my life has improved in the areas I’m deeply and privately struggling with 😊
I wish it was more common in the U.S. for the fold up mattress' like Japan. It would save so much space in everyone's houses and apartments. We spent so much money on HUGE beds and bed frames. Takes up 80% of my bedroom. We could easily have another space for activities.
Ah, now I know why I'm no millionaire...! Kidding aside, I could never habitually get up at 4am as I'd have to go to bed at 9pm, or 10pm at the very latest, which is impossible to me. I simply cannot sleep this early no matter how tired I am, especially not in the summer when it's still bright, warm, and noisy outside at that time. Also, my girlfriend (who has the same "owlish" body clock / biorhythm as me) would kill me if I set the alarm for 4am! ;-) But of course I have the utmost respect for people who have the discipline to get up brutally early.
I remember I took a gap year before starting university as a young baker at 18 haha, meaning I had to wake up at 4:30AM everyday to get to the bakery at 5:30AM. I don't know how I did it for 1 year but I used to remember have done so much before 12! gonna try and incorporate that in my exam season this year.
I like the tip of having something to look forward to, comparing the morning to that on your first date with your boyfriend/girlfriend. Cute! And I appreciate the mindset. As we get older, it's harder to find those enjoyable activities that can get us out of bed. Lol.
Thank you! Yes I would like to wake up at 4 am. I will have to try the 30 days to see! It’s so beneficial. ❤Doing fun things in the morning sounds great! I am definitely going to try the Superman pose!!
Lovely video! I can relate to many of the points here. I started waking up at 4am recently for a new job that I have to travel far to get to. I thought I’d dread the very early mornings but I’m finding myself looking forward to it as its solid quality time for myself.
I have to be at work at 3 to 4 am everyday. I been doing this for years. I have breakfast at like 12pm then get a nap before my other job. On the day I have fully off which is Saturdays that's my time to do fun. I try to get my shopping and stuff do in the middle of the week when I have time. I guess it depends on what type of job you have this will work.
You may want to review your diet. I always hear from people who try and like it, but always feel tired. Once they took a good look at what was going into their bodies, they made changes, and that was the key.
@@TheUrban.Camper thx but i only feel tired when i get up as early as he was talking about. when i let my body sleep and wake up naturally with no alarm i feel the healthiest
I will probably not do this challenge, because I have work at 4pm to 9pm. So my own lifestyle wouldn't really help with that 😅 But still interesting video.
Our bodies have a circadian clock. This means that whenever we sleep on the same time every night for three consecutive days, our bodies adjust and begin sending melatonin just before the time happens. People can still get the same amount of sleep of 6-8 hours and wake up at 4 AM. At this time, dawn is happening and the sun is about to appear. This gives a lot of time to prepare ourselves in the morning. I get it, maybe some people don’t like to wake up early. Recently I do admit that i wake up late. But the times that I have woken up early at 4 AM or 5, i was able to get the things i needed to do done. Mr. Aki is showing us the many benefits of waking up early.

That amount of sleep is important for memory consolidation. I got a Ph.D. in 1998.
God gives us wisdom, understanding, and discernment via His Proverbs, which keep us from the "strange woman", which is trickery.

You can be more aggressive on vacation, but while working or in school, I would recommend your advice.
Yes! We woke up at the time to do our first prayers in Islam.
And once we get habit to do it we will love it!
Always a smile on my face watching your videos. I try waking up 10 minutes earlier each day until I get to 5am!

It doesn't feel like your day is longer if you go to sleep earlier. Still the same amount of time awake/ asleep, but less social interaction.
I totally agree with that!
It isn't longer but it *feels* longer

I have even switched from being up in a daytime to being up all night and going to sleep at 7 AM, when I was free to do that.
u are so motivating. i won't wake up at 4am but i will make more of an effort to get up early and exercise, eat well, etc. etc.
so insightful! practical, useful information and excellent tips from your personal journey. i am so glad i came across this video! thank you for posting :)
When I live the sunrise is now before 4 o clock. If I want to see the sunrise I need to get up in different times along the year.
I loved the Thank you so MATCHA!!! ありがとうございました😊
Watching your video has encouraged me to start doing a 30 day challenge. Here’s to a better life and a better me😊
Was one of the best life choices I made, only second to quitting smoking and drinking.
After trying 4am for a while, I found I kept waking up at 2am. So that just became the norm . 😁
Beautiful, watching you make the matcha...the lovely way you fold the napkin.
@04:38 part of the hunger is your brain saying "this wake up time does not align with my inner clock, and I need more calories to function, to offset the difference between my internal clock needs and when you are asking me to function"
It sounds like waking up at 5 am aligns perfectly with your inner clock/circadian rythm.
4 am does not sound like it is ideal for your circadian rhythm. If you are occasionally still sleepy/needing to snack after a couple of weeks, your body is asking politely "can we please go back to what makes Brain happy?"
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, and both the way you chose to reframe your mental outset as well as where you struggled.
😊
I could not do 4am ver well, kept waking up at 2am. That is, without a doubt, my perfect sync.
Gracias nuevamente 🌹
Good for you! My father used to rise at 4am every day -- sometimes even earlier. He often went to bed at 7pm though.
Dear Macha Samurai thank you very much for this intresting Video ❤ you are very sweet and super positiv 💗💗💗
Thank you for sharing your experience I learned a lot from you,And as A muslim we also must wake up early for Fajir prayer and in my country Oman its around between 4 to 5
Allah who created us Knows what is best for us.
8:03 my strategy for not wanting to return to bed after waking up early is simply making the bed. I dare not make it messy again!!
Great editing and video...the info in the video is very interesting...thank you for making it
Hi
Samurai good to see
I wake up at 4 everyday
I think you should deserve more views for this amazing content
Love ur show, i ge5 up at 3.30 for last 2 years , cold showers , no social life, double degree doctor / surgeon/ entrepreneur here
I really appreciate these videos. The Lifestyle habits have been very helpful. Thanks!
Just excellent! Charming young man . Do you have a website wear I can purchase some of your suggestions...backpack, tea ceremony, etc? Thanks so much.
*where... :)
Thank you always good video ! 항상 고맙습니다
I’ve been getting up at 3:30 to go to the gym before work for years. Usually sleep 🛌 in until 5:00 or so on weekends 😂
I like a 2am start but same routine, when I am done work, I have no stress to get anything done.
I really appreciate your efforts towards this habit.
It will really help us to move on to our lifes.
Keep posting....
i found you few weeks ago and i can’t stop watching your movies. Keep going ! 🎉
Great!!! 👏 👏 👏 Love it!!!
Thank YOU so matcha, for these fun videos!
Thank you from Australia for another happy video ❤ Thanks to you, I now have a mattress on the floor and a whole new early morning routine - not quite 4am though 😅 I look forward to going to sleep AND to waking up 🙌 I used to dread both ❤
I do intermittent daily. I wanna challenge myself into doing this. Thank you for inspiring me. I shall tag you on my next video
Yey! Let's do it together! 😊
i wake up at 4am every day, have for years. you get used to it after a while. Don't usually need an alarm . it's time for myself before the day starts
The Bully Woke Samuel and Everyone Up Last Time
Great video and content! Thank you so much ❤
Thank you for your inspirational testimony. I used to wake up early too, it was victories experience.
I’m trying this along with listening to 432Hz whilst sleeping
I’ve tried the 432Hz already on its own and I can’t prove that it’s the reason but my life has improved in the areas I’m deeply and privately struggling with 😊
I wake up early every morning! I like it! Thanks for video!
I'd rather be up super early than super late. Hindu yogis do it too. One of the healthiest people on the planet. The true yogis of course.
Also, my girlfriend (who has the same "owlish" body clock / biorhythm as me) would kill me if I set the alarm for 4am! ;-)
But of course I have the utmost respect for people who have the discipline to get up brutally early.
When did you went to sleep?
🙋🏻♀️hello from Amsterdam!🌷
I go to bed at 9 or 10 pm, but I have a hard time getting up at 5 or even 6 in the morning. I'm unconscious in the morning.
Lol.
Why? Im 41 and I get up really Early if Im going to travel, or even if its Saturday only because is a free day and that is exciting.
Thank you! Yes I would like to wake up at 4 am. I will have to try the 30 days to see! It’s so beneficial. ❤Doing fun things in the morning sounds great! I am definitely going to try the Superman pose!!
around this week i wake up early
its 3 morning
im happy
I tried to wake up 4am in the past but it didn't work. I wasn't able to do any intellectual work. But you inspired me to do another try!
It is my goal to wake up at 5am everyday, but I'm so far from sleeping early enough to do that!
Thanks for sharing ❤
Haha😂 I gave up several times so it's time to give a try again. Thank you. With lots of love and respect from Bhutan 🇧🇹😊.
yeee! new video! feel so good though
Hello :) I just noticed you doing certain asana in the video. Are you practicing ISHA yoga? Thanks
I guess it depends on what type of job you have this will work.
thanks for the great inspiration, I ´m so motivated to try it too 😊
do u still wake up this early? is it unhealthy if i feel very tired doing this?
You may want to review your diet. I always hear from people who try and like it, but always feel tired. Once they took a good look at what was going into their bodies, they made changes, and that was the key.
@@TheUrban.Camper thx but i only feel tired when i get up as early as he was talking about. when i let my body sleep and wake up naturally with no alarm i feel the healthiest
To get up early you have to go to bed early. A 9pm bed time is not early either.
Hi Aki,
I have a request, would you please share the video of digital minimalist. I hope it’s gonna be interesting 🙏thank you
Thank you so matcha !
Gracias! Ver tu experiencia me motiva a intentarlo también. Usaré esa hora para organizar mejor mi tiempo y pensar cuales deben ser mis objetivos 😊
Hi, how did you master your English at such a high level?
I will probably not do this challenge, because I have work at 4pm to 9pm. So my own lifestyle wouldn't really help with that 😅
But still interesting video.
Waking up a 4am I think is counter productive. Your body needs sleep. You are depriving your body of its restoring needs. Why?
It seems to me that Indian and Japanese cultures are very similar.
"Motion and emotion are connected." Thank you for that message. It's motivating👍🏼
Thank you so matcha too 😅 I’ve tried waking up before 6:30am 🤦🏻♀️ plenty of times but 🤷🏻♀️💤💤💤💤💤
I have been waking up at 430am for almost a year, sleep at around 9+pm
