Fighting Group Juliet Lieutenant. 1977-1979. Later 1Mech Bt. A bit after my time after being in Ops Moscow, Vietnam and Carrot. I have huge respect for this dude. I was implementing computer systems at the SA Naval dockyard in Simonstown when this all went down, and programme manager for submarine maintenance (InfoPlan) in 85. My brother was a 32 Battalion Captain . Caught up with him at Buffalo while doing a camp while at uni at Bungane bridge (Divundu now) in 80. Both of us taken down with RPD's in V ambushes in 78 and 81 near Cuvelai. We both survived at least. But the wait till a morning casevac was never ending and we do share the memory over a whisky every now and then. I do not care about the fact that we are the forgotten generation. It has made us strong and turned us into determined, focussed businessmen who have ethically made millions. God bless South Africa.

I was just going to watch 5 minutes or so of this video but ended up watching the whole fascinating story. I salute Captain du Toit - he was a soldier doing his job and he even appreciated that his 'opponents' were also soldiers doing their job. The Cuban doctors saved his arm and he gave them credit for that. Jesse Jackson's theatricals and the comment from Wynand's Cuban captors thereafter very telling! And at the end the reflections , the advice that what you are now is a product of what you were etc - inspiring I thought. Thank you Captain du Toit.

The Admiral at my graduation was trained as a diver by my father so it was a very special occasion for me. Why I'm writing this is out of respect to you special forces guys. You were all a serious cut above the rest. My father was also in the SAS and never shared a single story or event he was evolved in. The Americans interference in the change over from the old South Africa to the new government was exactly the same interference by the Americans and the British governments that happened to the Rhodesians . The Mugabe regime was not ready or responsible enough to rule a country , and Ian Smith told the world this , but America and Britain interfered with their evil dirty politics . Politicians are the cause of all wars , they are responsible for the millions of deaths all over this world ! I found this interesting and the interview was very honest and professional . Sadly imprisoned for what .. my heart feels sad for this man . My respect goes out to him and sorrow for those soldiers that lost their lives because of those politicians .

Do the Canadian authorities know that you served as a mercenary for a foreign state, in fact a country that was under an embargo for it's crude racist policies at the time? If not, they might know soon. I forwarded your comment to the authorities including screenshots and you channel's url, which will make it easy to identify you. Have a nice day apartheid pilot!

Diss & Dad, please don't comment on something you don't have a clue about. You are acting like a baby, running to your mommy (government). These guys were doing their job. Loads of South African doctors that were educated in apartheid South Africa are saving lives and catching babies in your country.

@@philipdutoit20 Yes, these Apartheid terrorists were doing their job: killing South Africans, Namibians, Angolans and Mozambicans in order to maintain the illegal minority rule of the so-called "Afrikaners" (in fact foreign settlers) nationalist regime.
Each one of these Apartheid terrorists need to be treated in the same way as the Israelis treated Eichmann. They are traitors to the South African people, because they choose to support the anti-South African 'Afrikaner' nationalists.

What a fascinating interview and account. I never really knew about all of this. The way Wynand told it, was like sitting next to a fire with your grandfather. The setting was a bit odd, I like the outside idea, but mustve been a bit uncomfortable sitting on the ground basically and the glare coming from the bright sunlight didnt make for good picture quality. Nonetheless, lots of credit to an interviewer that is asking good questions and then leave the interviewee to answer at his own tempo - loved that. Thanks a lot for the upload!

I have been watching many of the videos relating to the Angolan war, interesting that the information is so scant and compartmentalised... Interesting that Wynand only began to piece the big picture much later on... I find it fascinating that the treaties and the terms and conditions of surrender are rarely know outside of the negotiating room. Even Codesa and the close-door meetings remain a mystery... The truth about the jameson raid is also obscured and left unconcluded, clearly there is a shadow power that hides behind all flags and nations while they are playing one game of Chess with the entire planet....

What a legend. He mentioned the bombing of the fuel installations in Beira @ 17:43, I personally know people from Beira from the Munhava and Pioneiros bairros that fled the explosions that night in 1982. I also happens to know one of the men that were setting the limpit mines that night. The story are just as interesting for the Beira port had many Russians during that time.
