I've never really been a huge fan of the Ape Hangers, but I love that there are so many different ways to customize a bike. Every one can be unique.

    • @SquireSCA

If by unique, you mean by looking like every other biker with the same ape hangers, the same orange and black tee, the same bandana, the same chain wallet, etc...

I ride with apes on my bike, just returned from New River Gorge to Charlotte, NC. by myself, no numbness, no pain and a great ride. Control is unbelievable. Counter steering with apes super great, I hate regular bars on bikes. By the way..... I am 65 yrs. young and can probably leave all you young guns on a curvy road.

I had 14’s on my Victory Highball, rode it quite a few times on 3-4 hour rides, Charlotte NC to Myrtle Beach SC, no issues. Apes are more difficult at parking lot speed but not difficult enough to complain. That being said, I prefer mid controls with high bars.

Praise the Lord! Great video! I have a '02 Sportster 1200 Custom that I put 18" ape on. With the factory riser and drag bars my neck and shoulders would hurt after a short time out on the road. With my apes, I actually sit up straighter with my hands almost shoulder height. Now I can take a lunch trip (7 hours each way) and come home the same with no problems. The crazy thing is I'm only 5'9". So I agree, if you go to high then they could be uncomfortable but if you keep them just below your shoulders then you sit in a more natural position which through experience is more comfortable. BTW, before anyone says "well that's just because your on a Sportster", while my wife and I was in Daytona we rented an '17 Electra Glide and I had the same problem with "reaching" down to the stock handle bars. Anyways, be blessed and be safe out there.

The general rule of thumb is that you do not want your arms resting above your shoulders. So you want them sized to be parallel or just below ( maybe just above ) your shoulders. This is because if they're too high, you reduce circulation into your forearms and hands, and will fatigue faster. But let's be honest, apes look and feel fantastic, if they're done right. I used to think they would suck, but then I bought a bike that had them ( 10" ), and I was blown away by how comfortable they feel. As such, I'll never again go without apes.

I rode (and still do) a 1984 Suzuki GS1100GK for years and my hands would go numb all the time. I bought a HD Road King with 12-inch apes that put my hands and arms right at or a bit below my shoulders and I have not had dead hands while using them. The apes do pose a bit of a challenge at lot parking speeds but control on open higways is much improved over standard placement bars. I installed a throttle lock on the Suzuki to deal with the issue. The Road King has a throttle boss that I can rest my hand on and it is very comfortable.

I was is great shape due to my last hardtail chopper. I was lucky to make it home 4 out of 7 rides without walking most of the way. It so increased my knowledge of roadside wrenching, which was an invaluable tool for future endeavors. Still one of my favorite bikes I ever owned. Finally cracked the frame at the tree when traveling over a pot hole at 40 mph. Rode in straight into the ditch on the frame since it broke in half and stepped off it as both halves went into the ditch. RIP chopper. I still miss ya.

I personally don't ride with Ape Hangers, though on some bikes they make the look good; it makes people do the double take and sneak a second look. As for the hands getting tired and etc., I've heard different stories. From those riders I've spoken with that ride with them most have said that once your body adjust to the position it's not an issue. One thing you did leave out though, every state has different restrictions on the height of a motorcycle's handlebars. So what may be good in one state may not be in another. Something the rider should check on before installing Ape Hangers. They love ticketing people here for everything; cars, trucks, motorcycles, skateboards, etc.!

I had a 2006 Wideglide that came with "mini" ape hangers. They were about 9 inches and were the perfect size in my opinion. Just enough for style, but still good control of the bike and arm comfort was fine. I have never been a fan of those tall ones, probably becasue I would ride for hundreds of miles at a time, not bar to bar.

I just ordered 12’s for my Street Glide. The stocks bars are too low causing back of neck fatigue from bending forward and down... I really notice it after a long ride. I was going to go with 10’s but for my arms to be straight out with slight bend in elbow... the 12’s were better. Im hoping it will help with my posture when riding the longer rides. I was torn between Factory 47’s or KST’s and I went with the KST’s.

I dislike them immensity. I like how they look but that riding position is as bad as it can get. You shouldn't ever get close to hanging on the bars or leaning backwards on the bike. Tall Ape hangers are for show bikes, not for safe and comfortable riding on the streets or even hwy. If you rode that bike for more than an hour with your hands above your shoulders, your hands get stiff and your arms turn to lead. Riding with giant ape hangers doesn't make you "tough". It demonstrates the thickness of your skull though. No helmet needed.
