Conscious or unconscious.... minimalism or excess...we all oscillate between these and available energy in the form of attention is the cause. I totally get what you say. One useful mantra when we see adverts, that fantastic sale, that must have item is to decide...is this really worthy of my energy and attention? Secondly I don't want my home to be a storage facility... I just don't like that idea so I try and cut that down to a minimum. Of course we need essentials but store everything else in somebody else's shop; shops are store houses of our future needs. Thirdly real estate is expensive....we buy the space so we should enjoy the space. Negative space is beautiful so another question arises....is this item so beautiful or necessary that it is worthy of this negative space....when we consciously ask this question and look around our home it can be quite enlightening. Loved the video... intelligent and thought provoking as always. I wish you well.
I've been minimalist since April, and I'm noticing now that the initial excitement has worn off, that I am really settling into this way of life for the long haul, and I'm loving it. I follow many of the tips you've talked about in your video, and it's a learning curve. I'm still using up tins of tea from months ago, so I'm not buying any more until its gone. The biggest struggle for me has been finding alternative activities to shopping, as it turns out it's my partner that wants to do it more than I do! I'd much rather go for a walk in the local woods!
Good for you. It really is a learning curve… I feel like it’s a level of calm that somehow I had an inclination to fight against. It seemed so uncomfortably foreign to feel so ‘at ease’. But I did find that as I let myself lean into it, that my own new desires that started to overcome my need to shop slowly started to show themselves. Like everything minimalist that I have come to witness, it comes slowly. But if you’re there for it, and if you resist the sharp groves worn deep by mindless shopping, the new things will show themselves. And it will be authentic, and lovely. And I agree with you, being outdoors is almost never the wrong answer :)
Interesting perspective on buying something you want at full price vs being enticed to buy something because it’s on sale. I like it! Thank you for a new perspective.🌸
Thanks Lyndsey for another wonderful inspiring vlog…… one thing I’ve taken to do on the continuing journey is every 6 months and go through all my possessions and if I’ve not used then for 6 months then they are on the no longer needed pile to go to charity shops…… like you I don’t buy stuff anymore and am in the process of just using what I have till it either breaks (and can’t be repaired), wears out.. …. Funny you mentioned buying! My current internal battle is a new sofa….. despite the old one having life left I’m drawn to a new comfy one! 🤯 Thank you again for your inspiration…… blessings…. 🌻🧿🪬☮️☯️🕉️🧘🏼♂️🙏🏽
I have long way to go to reduce my stuff, have to start somewhere, but these videos are helpful, and interesting. I seem to be doing the opposites of these tips. Thank you.
I have a Q about your move...as a minimalist who just moved! As it was long-distance, I gave away and sold many things that wouldn't fit in a van. That was ultimately a good thing, as my new place is VERY different, not to mention smaller. I'm finding myself buying a lot of things to solve issues that this place has. How did you deal, emotionally, with needing things in your new place, if you did need new things? I feel like the worst minimalist!
Well first off, congrats on the move! It’s a good question. But I think I settle myself in knowing that change is the most natural and inevitable part of life. And getting rid of the unnecessary to trade for the newly necessary is truly a minimalist way to deal with that change. In my move, many things I owned, that I wouldn’t have even taken note of, revealed themselves to be obsolete to me and I ended up getting rid of many of those things as it sounds that you did as well. So, as a new place is always a new palate it just makes sense that we need things that we didn’t before so that we can be effective minimalist beings in a new atmosphere. Especially in a new space though, I always try to give myself time to be sure that I don’t have something that I can use in a different way to fill a new need here. But other than moving slowly in acquisitions and surrenders - if I am sure that the new things are serving my minimalist existence in a new space, it is right for me to get what I need… in my future and my present! And you aren’t a bad minimalist lol. If you were you wouldn’t be thinking about it :)
I love that analogy of a garden and pulling the weeds.
Love that perspective about sales being pushes to buy something you haven’t fully committed to buying. So true!

If everyone was as thoughtful with their purchases as you and I, perhaps the Earth resources would not be used up at the pace we are going now.
So very true Carole ❤️

You are very welcome… and I believe in you. The tiny things make the biggest difference 🙂
Love your pretty red sweater and puppy roll🤭
Thanks for your reminders! I’m pulling my weeds regularly!
You are so welcome! ❤️🙂
Clutter void from the home but chaotic on the body

I wish the b-roll was not speeded up, it makes for an un-calm experience. I don't need to see the complete cleaning of a mirror, a few wipes will do.
