  • The glucose infusion rate or GIR is the rate of infusion of glucose in the neonate, usually at 4-6 mg/kg/minute. It depends on the strength of dextrose solution (%) and the rate of infusion (ml/kg/day)-in this short video, I explain how to calculate the GIR and its importance including examples on how to calculate, and some practical tips on how to calculate GIR on babies on mixed IV and feeds, as well as on how to increase GIR of the fluid with 25 % dextrose and how to prepare the infusion of certain concentration. Please share.

This is a wonderful video, very informative! for formula 1, I am wondering how we got "multiply be 6" in the denominator? Where does the 6 come from?

It’s because we assume weight of 1 kg, if I remember right. Thank you!

    Thanks a lot sir
At my unite we use formula to calculate GIR
    Sugar desired × weight ×time/ 1000
    Is it wrong?

Nice one thank you. One question i have is, why don't we multiply the weight by six in the denominator (we only divide it by six) when calculating GIR in the mixed iv fluid and EBM administration? Thank you.

How to calculate gir when mixture of dextrose 25 % and dextrose 10 % is given to the neonates

Hi, it depends on how much of each is used, for example, if you have 10 ml of 25% dextrose (2500 mg dextrose) and 90 ml of 10% dextrose, which is 9000 mg, the total of 11500 mg is there in 100 ml of the solution, so the percent of glucose (g per 100 ml) is 11.5%-just substitute this in any of the formulae discussed in video above to calculate GIR

What about 10% and 25% glucose?
Use this same equation 5x-25=y ???
