Spray foam insulation in van build (Spray foam vs Thinsulate vs Noico)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2019
- The second video in my Sprinter Van Build series I install spray foam insulation in my van. I also insulate the van with Thinsulate, and Noico Red closed cell foam pads. I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Spray foam vs Thinsulate vs Noico Pads.

I would be really interested in knowing the inside surface temperature difference between the spray foam areas and the thinsulate areas.
You do it right, you don’t cut corners, well done! I just heard this last week, “hard choices easy life easy choices hard life”. Bit more pricey upfront but you’re not going to regret it in the years and years ahead of this Beautiful vans life! And once again excellent some work! Really looking forward to the next one!
I’ve learned from the best :)
Very helpful explaining the different types of insulation and your though process.
That’s what I’m here for buddy bud bud
I say?? VERY GOOD job!!! :) ... I am going to use cans of spray foam for the wall between the cab and the back of the van .. and full giant sheets of Styrofoam (with foil on each side), and spray cans for the sides of the back of the van.
The ceiling has stock insulation I will leave alone ... I don't know what insulation it is (looking online to learn today) .. but I WILL spray the gap between the metal ceiling and the plywood walls at some point! :)
Mine is a nice square 1990's StepVan So it should be uncomplicated :) .. but I'm sure I'll run into something along the way! :)
Not criticizing but Id like to make some observations so anyone contemplating van insulation will know...
1.) Those steel structural supports are physically touching the exterior of the van. So thermal energy will transfer into the interior via the metal. You'll want to spray your foam at least an inch over the surface of those beams to get a decent thermal envelope.
2.) Windows are thermal gaps and the cab of the van has a lot of them. If you want good climate control you'll want to wall off that area (with a door of course) and have at least 3 inches of foam separating the cab from the rear. The cab will act like a green house. That might be good in northern climates but in more southerly climates you'll be waaaay too hot.
3.) You're going to want to spray foam a few inches thick over the wheel wells. Those are mad of thin metal leading directly to the noisy exterior of your van! You'll want to build a wooden or plastic box to go over the wheel well, then fill the space with foam.
Thanks for sharing Shaun...great job btw!! Can't wait for the next installment.
I appreciate it! Working on it :)
Soooooo good!! Really impressive work. I'm really seeing now why these built out vans are expensive, so much work goes into them!
You’re telling me! Thanks dude
You might want to pull all your exterior trim off to silicone behind it now that you plugged up the drain holes in the wall panels. The sprinters already have rust issues and water will get behind the spray foam and rust your panels. So you should do everything you can do to prevent moisture from getting in.
Ian Memory very valid point Ian, though Sikaflex or similar is more flexible and less affected by extremes of cold or heat than silicone and remains less ‘set’
Well .... has anybody actually had that as a problem so far
??
007nadineL yes ask Troy from van life tech. Also, humble road has a video where he pulls the trim off and silicones behind them. It is especially an issue with the old sprinters. Time will tell with the newer sprinters.
You're doing a really impressive job, Shaun! I'm really enjoying this video! It seems that 6'3" is the perfect height to be able to reach just about everything in the van.
I'm thinking about doing a similar Van Build. There seems to be a lot of Waste with the Spray Foam.
It makes me think if Someone sprayed the Top of the Van First, Let it Dry, Cut the Scrap off, Put as much of the Dried Scrap Foam into the Lower Wall Cavities (perhaps with a thin coat of foam in the Cavities first, leave wet), the fill the gaps with more of the Foam.
Peace… Salam... Shalom... Namaste and Thank You so much for All that you are doing to Heal our Mother Earth 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ 🌷 ❤
Heads up people - rigid foam has fantastic R-value but the density allows sound to travel through it... any type of batting material such as even cheap fiberglass has a very good sound deadening quality but often has the negative side of being able to hold moisture.
I'd like to place an order for the first van you do in conjunction with Winnebago. They already have some production line models but I can see the 'Shaun Wilkens' line of custom made vans selling like crazy.
Haha! Thanks dude! I’ll be sure to give you credit for getting me in to all this
What an amazing job you did. From all insulation videos I’ve been watching, your was the most didactic hahaha I really liked the different insulations. And I’ve been studying about customizing a van and I would probably getting flairs as you did or Dynamo Ultima did. Congratulations for your hard work. Can’t wait for more updating videos!!
Thanks Manuela! I'm definitely happy with the flares. If you go that route as well, make sure whoever installs them does a good hose test over them. My buddy had a leak in his. Working on a new vid now
Nice job Shaun! The shaving down of the spray foam looked like a Joy! That does so much better of a job getting the small spaces sealed up.
Thanks David! Yeah, it was quite the job
Can the spray foam be smoothed down before it sets to avoid the need for trimming later?
Interesting, is there anyway to apply the foam more efficiently, it seemed like there was a lot of bulk that had to be cut off. It can't be reused once set?
There’s definitely ways to do it more efficiently. The main way would be to take more time and do it in more sections. I did a single shot for sake of the video. Next time I’ll be more efficient.
Great videos, but I'm missing more pros cons than just price and ease of installation. Would be awesome if you could use more facts like R value and sound absorbtion.
It costs around $600 to have it professionally sprayed. Great job!
Shaun ... AWESOME. A question: what is the height from the floor to the ceiling? I'm 6'4" and want to do a van build, yet I must be able to stand up fully. So, would I fit in your van? TIA, and good work. Jim
Thanks man! The height is exactly 6’4 in the middle and goes down to 6’3 on the sides. Once you add flooring and ceiling panels, you’ll definitely be dragging your head a little bit unless you have poor posture like me :)
@@shaunwilkens the trick is to bolt the wood-beams besides/along/in parallel to the metal roof beams, and not on top of them as another layer. Then do a real thin layer of plywood/vineer, instead of paneling or hardwood. And if you do floor heating, you could do with thinner floor insulation, and/or do the finish in carpet or floor vinyl instead of hardwood paneling/floorboards as many do. I observe usa and Australia does a lot of hardwood finished. It just takes up space and often weigh a lot.
Not sure if you have already started, but a high roof transit is 6'7" before you insulate.
Well played. How did that oscillating tool help with trimming the spray foam?
Did the spray foam warp your van panels? I love this videos! Keep up the great work man. :)
You killed it buddy. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Bryce!
Nice job done!
Thanks!
Noico black sound deadening butyl on the roof followed by noico red foam to decouple and then thinsulate on the ceiling. It will make the van super quiet when your getting rained on.
Nice! Did you do that on your van?
@@shaunwilkens I don't have a van but I drive an F-150 crew cab and I did that makes a huge difference.
I am most excited about this
I'd be curious of chemical issues over time with health.Heard something about that once.
Yeah, I’m curious too
Closed Cell Insulation?
I didn't see a vapor barrier after the Thinsulate above the headliner. Are you suppose to have one?
It wouldn’t hurt but a lot of van builders don’t even put insulation over the cab
I just watched a video where an RV dealer that builds out Vans said they tried three different times to use foam insulation with different mixtures including help with the company coming to their shop but every time they used it it affected the skin on the outside of the van and made it Ripple and such has anybody noticed this?
@Just Judy It didn’t effect the skin on this van. I could see it effecting vans that have the big panels where the windows and flares in this van have been cut out. There isn’t much supporting those panels structurally.
Nice job and a well insulated van. Maybe you applied the foam too heavily. A small test area prior to tackling the whole interior may have been wise . Leaving it a full twenty four hours to fully cure would have told you if the spray coating was too much or too little. But a great result even if it worked out a little expensive.
Yep, I think you’re right! Haste makes waste and this was no exception.
Masking would have saved you some time, also, you can use a hot wire to cut foam very quickly, especially in an area like you're working in.
Would have saved me hours! Ha! Thanks for the advice
Hey man, thank you so much for the video! This is exactly what I needed! But didn't you forget to add the vibration dampeners to the metal sheets? You know, the viscoelastic ones. Would have also spray foamed the tire rims personally, myself. :)
0:38 - what kind of window is that please? Can it be used for security or is it way too weak for that? 🤔
The windows are called arctic tern from Tern Overland. They’re acrylic and pretty strong.
i just finished spray foaming the exact same van as you. would you still say you have no panel distortion?
i did extremely light coats and still ended up with some distortion.
There’s no distortion that I can see. I imagine if I were spraying wide panels I’d end up with distortion. I think I avoided that since my window panels either have flares or windows in them and the lower sections have a lot more structure supporting them.
Hi James,
What temp was the metal at when you sprayed?
@@Raynebowgaming around 10-15 degrees celsius
Enjoying your informative vids. I am curious - did you insulate your floor? I am also curious what roof rack & ladder you have?
Thanks! I didn’t insulate my floor and I’m good with the decision. I direct my diesel heater towards the floor if I need a warm spot to stand. The roof rack and ladder came from a company called baja voodoo but I’m not sure I would use them again. I think I’ll go with either aluminess or flatline van co on the next one.
Eamon and Bec got a guy to drive to them and he sprayed foam their 3rd van... I think for $600 cad
Sick Dude!!
Thanks Brit!
I see you on that intro vortex shot. What a stud. Also, did you get new jeans and have you been working out? You are an impressive human being.
Nope and nope. Haha
Do you know if the spray foam out gases at all ? Is there a residual smell from the foam ?
Thank you for your time.
I don’t believe it does. The smell went away after a day or so.
Hitch Post
I would look at Handifoam they have foam kits that are certified for living spaces
How much
6:11, 😆
You look pretty tall, how tall are you? I'm about to get my van and trying to gauge thickness of roof and floor in order to stand without slouching.
I’m 6’3 and I can stand straight up in the middle but not quite on the sides
Did you get an estimate for someone to do it professionally? I have no idea how much it would be but maybe you'd feel better about the price you paid if you compared it to paying for it to be done. You seemed to do a good job of it :) Thanks for sharing.
I never got a price. Figured i could do it myself but it probably wouldn’t have been too much more expensive to have a pro do it.
I enjoy all your videos! I just installed flarespaces on my van. I've been looking for the longer magnet for the rear door. have you found a place to buy one? thanks
Thanks man! You can find the extended bumper here but $50 seems a little excessive. europarts-sd.com/item.asp?PID=3639
I’d also double check to make sure this one is in fact longer than what’s on your van
@@shaunwilkens thanks man I appreciate it!
Electric carving knife - excellent foam trimmer! For next time!
Good call! My ex took mine to goodwill so I was out of luck, haha
Was the spray foam open or closed cell?
Closed cell
My next would be reflectix all over :)
Wouldn’t hurt!
Agagahahahahahhahaha
Is it also good for rust prevention?
Rust prevention is probably the most important reason to use it.
Yr are a God
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Did you consider Lizard Skin ceramic insulation?
Yeah, I did but it wouldn’t have been as good for colder climates
@@shaunwilkens thanks for the reply!
You could have used closed cell insulation instead of spray foam. Spray foam is messy and not good to use for VAN as it is hard to remove
Where did you get the foam?
The Home Depot
Too bad you didn't have help. Hope it worked out.
Why the corny music
