  • Instead of just doing a livestream, I edited this down to make a shorter video that would be easier to watch. But I left in some of the mistakes and unexpected things that happen, to give viewers a real sense of what it can be like. Let me know what you think of this approach.
On February 16, 2024, I did a Parks on the Air (POTA) late shift activation at Lock 32 Canal State Park (K-2097, K-8098, K-6532) in WNY. I started operating using AM, but later switched to SSB. I used the ICOM 7300 and the Wolf River Coils Sport Forty antenna on a mag mount.

Great video Mike. 🌮🌮🌮 I think this is the first video that I have heard myself over the air.

Thanks! I'm sorry I just missed you on AM. I only hear part of your call and then a minute later it dawned on me it was probably you.

@@MikeN2MAK I saw in your reaction when you connected the person to the callsign. The first time I worked Big Jeem over the air I didn’t recognize the call, but the voice sounded familiar. It took me a hot minute to realize who I just worked.

@@GraymanPOTA I still need to get Jeem in the log. I don't have his call sign down yet though, so I'll probably have the same experience as you, LOL.

Thanks, Morten. I've only tried it on 40m so far. I need to see what AM is like on some higher bands.

Awesome video Mike. I’ll have to try AM some time. At the end that’s exactly what I do, turn the volume because they will keep calling.

@@MikeN2MAK I’ll try to remember. I may have a little more success considering I live in one of the largest metropolitan areas of the country NYC.

I've had to change the frequency on a lot of QSOs in Hammrs because I'll hunt and then call, but sometimes forget to change the frequency in the log to the one in calling on, so they're all the same as the last one hunted. Shit happens, no biggie. Great activation.

Thanks! It was a quick fix and a good learning opportunity to share too.

I’ve had mixed success with AM. Either I can easily get a frequency and a good number of contacts. Or I have horrible luck getting a frequency and making contacts. 🤷‍♂️

I only have a few ones@@MikeN2MAK, and the same with FM on HF. Really nice when they work though

Thanks, Kevin. For the record, I like QRP more than AM. But it’s fun and helpful to try new things and I’m happy to encourage others.

That's always my problem when I have to do last call and shut the radio off with a good pileup going

Totally. I get it too. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go. I usually do the countdown approach, which I learned from an Elmer. When you are counting down how many more you'll take, people realize you're really gonna go QRT. Thanks for watching!
