    Yabushige previously said the exact same line to Omi, ``Why tell a dead man the future?'' In the first episode, there was a scene where they discuss whether to report weapons from overseas to Toranaga.
    At the last moment, Yabushige realized that Toranaga knew this.
    Then they smile back at each other.

    No matter how many times I watch it, Buntaro is stepped on, kicked, and left alone, but no one sympathizes with him. Behind the deep double fence, he lives his life cherishing his father and his wife.
    The military commander who was the model for the real-life Buntaro personally collected the remains of his wife who died in the explosion, gave her a Catholic funeral, and even built a Catholic church for his wife. Every year, he held a memorial service for his wife in a Catholic ceremony.
    He was a samurai who was active under Ieyasu.
    Buntaro is not just a domestic violence man🥲

    To answer your question about why Blackthorne needs to know about shipbuilding, the historical model William Adams was apprenticed to a shipyard shortly after his father's death in the age of 12.
    He studied shipbuilding, astronomy and navigation there for 12 years (i.e. he must also have had an unimaginable knowledge of the mathematics and physics of the time for normal sailors).
    He then joined the Royal Navy and sailed under Sir Francis Drake, who defeated the Spanish Armada, the most powerful naval force in the known world at the time.
    He then spent another 10 years as a navigator on merchant ships between England and North Africa.
    In addition to English, he spoke Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch, and later Japanese.
    This is a little too short in the show, but Blackthorne (Adams) was anything but a normal sailor.
    Navigators were the most important people on board ships, usually even before the captain.
    Still a great reaction to a breathtaking show imo.
    Greetings

    1:02 Kashiki Yabushige (樫木藪重), played by Asano Tadanobu (浅野忠信), finally committed seppuku and died in episode 10. But the actual model, Honda Masanobu (本多正信), was indeed an opportunist in his own right, who became the first and foremost chief lieutenant of the Edo Shogunate and served two generations of Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川家康) and Tokugawa Hidetada (徳川秀忠).
    However, perhaps taking into account the feelings of viewers who would not tolerate a traitor, Toranaga ordered him to commit seppuku in this drama, and in the form of Toranaga acting as intercessor. This was indeed an honourable seppuku and a very generous treatment.ところが、裏切り者を許さない視聴者の心情を考慮したのだろうか、このドラマで虎永は彼に切腹を命じた、しかも、虎永が介錯を務める形で。これはまさに名誉のタヒであり、かなりの厚遇であった。
    In the first place, seppuku was an act of self-immolation in which a samurai committed seppuku himself in order to avoid the disgrace of having his head cut off and exposed on the battlefield. In the dorama, a number of gaijin - barbarians were shown on screen with their heads exposed.そもそも、切腹とは、戦場で侍が首を切り取られて晒し首になる不名誉を回避するために、自らが割腹する自害行為であった。劇中でも、何人もの外人‐蛮人の首が晒されている画面が映っていた。

    20:53 In Japan, the flower of choice is "sakura" .Sakura is cherry blossom in English. The "sa" in sakura means "god of rice fields" and "kura" means "storehouse, pedestal," meaning that sakura are "trees in which the god of rice fields resides." In Japan, Sakura are in full bloom from late March to early April, and then fall all at once. Since graduation ceremonies are held at this time at schools in Japan, sakura reminds Japanese people of "farewell and fresh start" and makes us feel sad.

    I've enjoyed Yabushige too, but to say he's been "thrown back and forth like a yo-yo" isn't accurate - he threw his own loyalty back and forth like a damn yo-yo, more like! That said, his death tugged at the heartstrings but it was warranted. So many beautiful moments in this finale, so many poignant goodbyes to characters that we've all come to love, hate or accept despite their flaws - but I'll forever be grateful we were gifted a show that had quality and care at its heart, at EVERY level. The impeccable score, the writing, the cinematography, the direction, the performances - it deserves all the awards.

    The plan was to not have that big battle.. He wanted peace for the land, not a giant bloodbath to precede it.. I also think he did not let john second that guy because he wanted to chat with his "buddy" one last time, maybe rub his nose in it a bit and let him suffer a few extra seconds longer than John would have let him. I think his smirk was a yes to wanting to be shogun and also for pausing before finishing him off, for a few more seconds of pain he deserved.

    31:18 Blackthorne saying he came to use Toranaga is a commentary on the Western Notion of friends of convenience, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”…and How it was completely different from how Japanese viewed loyalty.
    All the good things he ever did in the show, he did with an ulterior motive and only served himself. Let me enumerate a few examples.
    1. Drawing a map of the world and all the info he revealed. This was meant for him to try to increase his importance and turn Toranaga against the portuguese.
    2. Helping him escape Osaka the first time. This should be obvious. He just didnt want to die getting caught up in his escape plan.
    3. Saving him from the earthquake. In his mind he is thinking “now Toranaga owes me a huge favor. Maybe now he will allow me to go after the black ship”.
    The first completely selfless thing he does was to perform that ritual suicide in protest for how Toranaga was treating the Village. And he did that all for Fuji-sama. 🥹🥹🥹
    Blackthorne also admits his war is “Tsumaranai” which can also be translated to petty/insignificant/worthless; in reference to his earlier convo with Alvito about the petty battles between Catholic and Protestant and Calvinists and all the other shitists. And it was also him letting go of his selfish ambitions and dreams to be a celebrated man in England.
    Toranaga sees this. He has passed the test. So he denies him his death, gives him the “people’s elbow”, and pretty much tells him: “now you’re one of us. Now you will build that ship and use it FOR ME”

    • @KristiinaBerg
      @KristiinaBerg 8 днів тому +1

      Well, I don't know if Blackthorne needed any "lessons" from Toranaga about unselfishness. He was the first to defend him against the shinobi assassin and was ready to try to rescue Buntaro to the dinghy. And he helped to rescue Ricardo and so on. He was appalled by the killing of Fuji's baby (rightly so). John Blackthorne was a decent human being from the get go, rough around the edges and with his own ambitions of course. A solid character beautifully fleshed out by Cosmo Jarvis.

    • @khaii13
      @khaii13 7 днів тому +1

      @@KristiinaBerg again, everything Blackthorne ever did had an ulterior motive. He was not a “Loyal subject/ally” in the same way Mariko-sama was. This is not to say he was not a compelling character or that at times his moral compass did not shine through, because they did. But, at the end of the day, it had all been to ingratiate himself to the side he ended up falling in line with.
      As for the killing of the baby, as a Christian Asian, i am also appalled by it. But, if that did not happen, drawing a sword, even partly, to a Reagent Council member would have been sufficient excuse to insinuate warmongering and would have seen all of them, the Lord, the guy who pulled the sword, his wife and baby, all dead anyway.

    • @KristiinaBerg
      @KristiinaBerg 7 днів тому +1

      @@khaii13 We definitely disagree on Blackthorne having an ulterior motive in "everything" or we have watched different shows. Toranaga never gave him his ship and crew back as was promised and that was dishonest. I have not read the books so I do not know how Blackthorne was depicted there. The problem that I see here is seeing the Japanese culture of the era as superior to the Western culture. There are fallacies on both sides, there are no perfect cultures, all need to learn from each other.

    • @khaii13
      @khaii13 7 днів тому +1

      @@KristiinaBerg did Toranaga actually make that promise? Did he say he agreed? Can you time stamp when he exactly said he agreed to give back the ship and crew?
      And no, i am not trying to prove that one culture is superior to another in any way shape or form. Im just describing things, in as much as they were depicted and whatever understanding of them that i have, as plainly as they are, as best as i could.

    • @KristiinaBerg
      @KristiinaBerg 7 днів тому +1

      @@khaii13 That is the way Blackthorne understood it, so at least Toranaga owes him by saying "you understood me wrong." Where did you get the idea what Blackthorne was thinking when he rescued Toranaga in the landslide? From the book? There was nothing in the show to suggest anything other than an instant reaction of helping someone. Anyways, if Blackthorne had all these ulterior motives and he was only looking after himself until episode 10, then Mariko-sama fell in love with the wrong man.

    実際のウイリアム·アダムスは1614年に家康から帰国を許され、旗本を辞職して長崎に行ったが、東インド会社の司令官と大喧嘩して船に乗らず、江戸にも帰らず、長崎で6年過ごし55才で亡くなった。その頃にはオランダが、日本や台湾の利権を独り占めしてしまっていた。🤣

    Blackthorne knew quite a bit about the construction and repair of ships as part of his pilot's training. Pilots were formally educated in their craft and had to be literate to read the rutters and charts. And Blackthorne specifically reveals in his backstory that he spent much time in the English and Dutch Shipyards.
    In the book he hauls the wreck up onto the beach so that he can cannibalize it for any materials that can be salvaged to be used in the building of the next ship. Which he is planning to christen the Mariko.

    After the drama in real life, ochibano kata start the civil conflict against toranaga because toranaga didn't put ochibano kata’s son to next shogun. So she started the war. (Osaka no Jin) that will be season 2?😂

    The way to understand what is happening there is to listen to people without interrupting them.
    However, Japanese culture is not enough.
    Not only the story, but also while the person's heart is moving, you can't understand it unless you feel it quietly.
    However, if you can keep an eye on it, you can see the scenery that the person is expressing together.

    If you do cover Monarch, Legacy of Monsters, Anna Sawai is also in that show so you can get your Mariko fix. I would cover Severance, Silo or even Foundation, if you cover and Apple show.

    This is my first comment. I am Japanese.
    This title is “A Dream Within a Dream.”
    Anjin was old and sleeping with a necklace on his left hand.
    Anjin clung to Mariko's grief. It was Anjin's own dream (future).
    But by throwing the necklace into the lake, his own future changed.
    When he decided to die for the villagers, he turned around and looked forward as if he had made up his mind. For in his own dream, he himself was alive, but he had decided to die here. It turned out that it had been a dream.
    I interpreted it that way.

    Toranaga is a master manipulator who used everyone around him to achieve his goal. He deceived everyone into thinking he's righteous when in fact he is no different from everyone else.
    "A Dream of a Dream" - Blackthorn going back, growing old and dying in England is a Dream which he had to let go. He never left the Japans.

    “The Ogre lost his precious Leafless Branch the moment he crushed the Flower underfoot; sisters in the end, after all”
    「オーガは、彼が足元に花を押しつぶした瞬間に、彼の貴重な葉のない枝を失いました。結局のところ、姉妹」
    For the first time in the entire series, Ochiba sama looks directly to Ishido while talking to him; in all other episodes, she glances at him but looks away. That was the most subtle, passive-aggressive death stare I have seen on screen to date.🫣
    Yabushige and Toranaga smirking at each other in the end was awesome, too. Yabushige got the best end he could have gotten, considering all he has done: realizing that whether he knew it or not, he has served his Lord Toranaga excellently. And maybe, just maybe, lightening the burden in his conscience a bit, afterall: a future Toranaga victory will never come to pass if Mariko did not die INSIDE of Osaka. An understanding passed between them, no words needed to be said: Toranaga desires to be Shogun, afterall.
    Goodbye to our favourite sociopath.
    Blackthorne kills a possible future version of himself-an old man, filled with regret, clutching on to Mariko’s crucifix-by mirroring Mariko (literally doing a ritual su!c!d3 like a woman [a blade through the heart] instead of seppuku [slicing his belly open] like a samurai would) in order to protect Ajiro: the first completely selfless thing he has done in the show; and also by letting that exact same crucifix go into the water along with the ashes of Fuji-sama’s family. And to think he did all those things mostly as an act of kindness to Fuji-sama… she deserves the best. 🥹🥹
    "I forcced fate to gaze upon me so that I can pluck its eyes out"
    -Ochiba no Kata
    Also, the fact that Anjin used the word 詰まらない【つまらない】 (tsumaranai) when he said “my war is small” can also be translated to “my wars are petty/trivial/silly/worthless” in reference to his ambitions and designs for England and his war against the Catholics. That was him letting go of his personal ambitions for something greater.
    The entire show (and the novel it was based on) was one giant setup to place Toranaga in a position to win the final battle.
    The broad strokes of the scenario for the final battle were revealed, but the details of the final battle plan (along with the final politics to fully turn all the lords who now have a soured opinion of Ishido) and how the battle actually ensued are still hidden.
    So who is ready for a “new/separate” mini-series or feature film titled “Sekigahara”?
