I like the theory that Basil didn't bother having children because he believed the world was gonna come to an end in the 1030s, the millennial anniversary of Jesus' crucifixion.

Basil probably just didn’t care about the empire after his reign
By what little accounts we have, Basil was obsessed with his empire, so I can’t really think of any reason such a competent man would not secure succession other than just not caring about anything after his death

50 years on the throne & he never once thought "My brother is a fucking idiot & his daughters aren't married yet...shit...I should get a wife!" - Great Emperor & a Good Warrior but what a stupid decision to not pursue having a child. Hell ADOPT! Didn't he have Isaac Komnenos be raised under his influence around the last quarter of his Reign? Why not make him the heir in the eventuality of Constantine's passing? "I'll let my brother succeed me but then Isaac will succeed him"
Isaac was pretty capable into his old age so. Jesus Christ Basil 🙉

But, everyone that came after Basil and Constantine VIII were competent. There was just a rapid succession of emperors, that the imperial treasury was suffering from lack of funds because each emperor would spend a lot to secure the loyalty of the key government bureaucrats, aristocrats and generals.

We can assume from all the evidence and scriptures that most probably they both came to an understanding. Basically instead of a unix running the empire Constantine chose his brother and in return he wouldn’t produce any heirs. Of course we will never know if Basil had children but kept them a secret or bastards that never met their father but this is the impression we get.

This kinda reminds me of the situation that we, ourselves, are somewhat in. Think about it; stagnant or declining birth rates, more people less likely to marry and have children, etc. However, the reasons our dilemma and theirs are probably vastly different.

While the name Byzantine empire was coined a few centuries after the fall of Constantinople, the emperors and the people of Byzantium saw themselves as Romans.
