    But seriously: When you have a problem, *always* at least listen to the solutions people give you. Never dismiss a suggestion just because you don't expect that person to be able to give you a solution. Everybody who is there is trying to make it work and you have already shown not to have a solution, so....

  • @DaltonUibel
    @DaltonUibel 8 років тому +31

    Honesty guys, I know you worked hard on the short film that you did, but you really need concentrate on keeping your subjects in focus. Having your talent out of focus is one for the biggest turn off's for an audience. When I watched the camera man moving in closer to the subject, he wasn't even pulling focus. Anyway, I appreciate the time spent on the film, I just think that there needs to be more consideration for the little things. Also never put down your team members on set by saying they are the "lowest ranking job on set", they're all volunteer, and there is no room to talk at the position your in. There is a lot you still have to learn, and one day when your get older, your going to start as a production assistant just like everybody else.

    Also the great tools that are accessible without being rich today help. Such as Adobe Speedgrade in the creative cloud. Sometimes you got to reshoot a scene or can't go back to the same location or the weather won't be the same, I've gotten quite good at making it look exactly the same with Speed Grade. Mostly what I do now, since I'm a colorist, I already know what I'm gonna do the footage so I can pick out a location and know what it will look like.

    Stanley Kubrick fans will recall that for the filming of the film Barry Lyndon, he acquired ultra fast lenses designed for NASA to shoot dinner table scenes by candlelight only! Simon: is there a cheat sheet or table for aperture and shutter speed combinations?

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  8 років тому

      +Cana Dude Kubrick was crazy about his lenses :) As far as a cheat-sheet, the basic idea is to set your shutter speed to 1/50th (double the frame rate, which is usually 24), and then the aperture just as wide as possible (low numbers: f/1.4, 1.8, 2.8 etc). Using a shorter shutter (eg 1/200th) or a aperture of f/5.6, f/8 etc will make everything darker.

    This is a great / helpful / encouraging resource for lighting independent shoots! For some reason I CANNOT find the option to sun map like you explained at 1:48... Downloaded google earth (both phone and laptop) and NO CLUE where the toggle switch is you guys used to learn about where the sun will be... Halp!
