Man, I miss Flipnote. It got me to rekindle my love of art and pursue it as a career! A lot of the creators from Flipnote still hang together. I still remember my one flip, I did this "Runaway Train" flip using audio from Courage the Cowardly Dog where it ended with the "I like trains" asdfmovie guy getting hit by said train. That got stolen so much I can't even tell you. Oh, and I can't forget mentioning that I ran into and got chat-harassed by Chris-Chan. He was trying to pick up chicks one night, he didn't last long before getting banned.
@Mint III Absolutely, I saw a flipnote in the "hot" section that said "GIRLS ONLY CHAT" with age numbers and Chris' picture on the flip and I was like "this seems weird for some guy to be requesting girls when he looks far older than the average girl on Flipnote" so I went in to check if things were like...okay...and not creepy...and he was in the comments section trying to get personal info from several CLEARLY uncomfortable girls who didn't know what was going on. I questioned his age in a comment cuz I was worried he was an adult trying to mess with minors, and he just wrote in the chat to "GO AWAY! GIRLS ONLY! YOU AREN'T ALLOWED HERE!!" and like...all the girls went quiet and I hung around for about 5-6 minutes to be sure nothing weird was going on before I left. I think I reported the flip? I'm not sure if reporting was a thing yet. Anyway, I didn't even know who the dude was at the time until after Flipnote had closed.
I really think we should access all the animations the people made. Some are lost forever. We should be able to access it but not actually make any more
Flipnote was one of the biggest thing that made me and my brother so close as kids. Now that he's doing college in another state it makes me happy to have such good common memories.

Nah I will never forget Hatena, literally what my childhood was. Still in contact and have met friends I met 10 years ago on there. It’s the best I wish it never ended
I get a christmas feeling when im reminded of flipnote. It warms my heart to know that its still talked about. Its just sad that people either left it behind or forgot it. Now theres only 3 people that i know that still care about it. Flipnote was a family i never had. I loved everyone there. Even the spammers. I love everyone that has experienced the flipnote community. And i hate saying it, but in a way it should stay gone. Memes now are just not fitting for flipnote anymore. And with these old members with different mindsets, things will be extremely different if it ever came back. Especially the new comers like kids of 2018, which would suck (you can already guess why). But I will never forget my flipnote family.
Yeah it was great I love the Flipnote community the would always clash others creations and ideas together and remix each other flipnotes and make them even better. If only I had saved those flipnotes to my storage😢
Damn... I remember looking forward to updates to his “Untitled Series”. I think I actually still have Boss’ and Philip’s old flips still saved on my SD card after all these years. I remember going ham downloading everything I liked when the word got out Hatena was ending😔 I know Sudomemo is great and all, but it’s just not the same anymore imo
I loved flipnote hatena on the dsi. I spent a lot of time animating stick fights (this was the one and only time I tried my hand at animation). I uploaded a few of them but most of them were unfinished and just sat there on my sd card. I sold my dsi tough... I wish I had saved my animations somewhere.
Um, don't get your hopes up just yet as it is still a work in progress but the same creator of Sudomemo is working on a back-up of every flipnote ever made so you might be able to get that stuff back... eventually... if you know your old username.
I remember when my cousins and their parents came over for a month and it was so fun. It was Black Friday and all the parents were gone, and my cousins were asleep. I remember lying under the pool table, watching Flipnotes on Hatena the entire night. It felt like the longest night ever, in a good way. I miss being that young.

haha flipnote is still the reason why i animate today on youtube tbh I remember making a few channels on there but i forgot the names.... mostly warrior cats and like one sonic one
I spent my days on flipnotes hatena in chatrooms making friends most of the time, one of which I still keep in contact with to this day. There was a lot of drama in there. That I was a bit too involved in. I was a stupid kid but I made a lot of memories and a lot of bad flipnotes with my horrible Pokemon gen 5 OCs, which I picked out to use just because they were easy to draw lmao. When I finally got my hands on flipnotes studio 3D, I made a single flipnote on it, an original comedy flipnote called 'communist Casey' which I spent toons of time on and turned out great, and I hoped it would reinvigorate my love for flipnotes but without that online, I quickly stopped using it, and was only able to upload that flipnote to UA-cam.
I honestly felt betrayed when they shut flipnote hatena down and only made 3D available for those who had club Nintendo accounts. (Is there still a way to get flipnote 3D? I've not been able to figure that one out.) Even as they announced that they were deleting years of fans of the app's work and everyone was saying, "Oh, but look on the bright side." or "This is good for us." I was just shaking my head. Maybe it's because I was still in my cynical teenage years, but the whole experience showed me how incompetent Nintendo was to handling online services and still are to this day. In a few of ways I've not recovered. While I've gotten over loosing hours of work trying to make some good animations, still have access in communicating with the people I talked to (mostly Epic Guitar's chatroom) though we don't talk much to each other, glad that whatever cringe-inducing things I said in the past are practically wiped off the face of the Earth, like, dang man, I'm still angry about it but I don't want to be anymore. It's like my stride in creativity died that day. I grew to envy other artists who I didn't even know for unreasonable circumstances, became wrapped up in my own conventions effectively stranding myself to my own ideals, became so strict in perfectionism, dismissed anything I thought was unoriginal, a few more things I can't think of right now. And I have to say I'm still like that now. I think it's only been a little over a year now that I've been trying to break away from all this negativity. I've seen a lot of gray in recent memory or if not that, just haven't been productive in it because I'm an adult now who needs to figure out how to balance it out with a job. I miss those years. It doesn't help when I'm more knowledged about the things I like and how down hill those things like UA-cam or current video game practices are going right now. I'm so sick of it. I still use Flipnote Studio to draw. I never stopped. It sometimes feels like I'm shooting myself in the foot by using it with how small the screen is, the terrible calligraphic brush they gave us that makes strokes thicker on one side than the other (but it doesn't do that when drawing a comment on a flipnote. I remember that.), and limited colors. However, much like MS Paint, it's so gosh darn simple. I hate how something like photoshop doesn't come with a manual. Make it easy for a kid to use, but something a professional can excel at. Also, portability. You can't beat that. Why has no one thought to make something like it is beyond me. I may still use it, but pretty much dropped animating altogether when they shut it down. It's the same as when I build something in MineCraft, "Who's going to see this and appreciate the time it took to make?" Answer is no one because I'm an idiot who doesn't know to upload a video. Haven't really tried, though. Nah, I'm a sorry sack of nothing with the writing on my tombstone of, "Maybe one day." because I don't think what I do is good enough. Such is life. I'm pretty sure stars were a means of getting a better rank as a flipnote creator. Also, my way of figuring out a flipnote was worth watching or not or by it's thumbnail. Big creators had it made, but good luck getting there with all the copies flying around. People usually stuck to their favorite creators because they uploaded good content and could draw well enough. I particularly remember one flipnote created by Anthony that was one frame and just said "TEST" in the middle of a white background. It received thousands of stars and after that he said that was exactly what he was expecting because there were so many people just handing stars away regardless of whether or not a flipnote deserved it. Not like what he said went very far, the system just sucked. People talked about it. I know I did, but it went nowhere. Last flipnote I watched was one of EpicGuitar saying something along the lines that this was better for the community... Sorry for the long negative comment. I thought I'd just get this off my chest and say all this out publicly so maybe now I can go down a path of self betterment and finally look past this.
This is exactly how it feels. Just having flipnotes as a kid and enjoying them and being inspired by then was a huge huge huge part of my childhood and my present time. Flipnote is the reason why I can animate and draw and for it to just be so carelessly handled was so upsetting. I remember being so disappointed that I couldn’t get flipnote 3D and when they shut down flipnote hatena. I still use flipnote 3D but I haven’t uploaded anything yet.
@@twitchywitchy_lilo9458 Well, I guess I should give an update for ya. I was just notified that I had some replies, so I’m 2 years late. If you want a quick status update from me, I’ve gotten over myself and am a better person for it. I still think Nintendo messed up. My DSi died, but I managed to save all my Flipnotes and now draw on Flipnote 3D. My Nintendo: I had no idea about this. I think I found out about it half a year later. I was setting up some online Switch stuff and randomly came across it. I don’t know when Nintendo did this or if they even advertised it, but for years I’d look on the E-shop to see if they decided to finally drop Flip3D. I’m glad I have the app now, but that really irked me. Flipnote 3D: I’m really glad to have it since my DSi’s top screen one day started to have a faulty connection and could randomly turn off. Dang thing went through everything - even the battery pack is exposed. So, when I first got 3D, I immediately went back to the original. Frankly, the only upsides 3D has is a few extra functions, 1 more layer, more colors, and a pencil tool that isn’t lopsided like in the original. I’ve been using the app for a year and I’m still not a fan of the UI, how onion skinning works, or how the drawing feels like it’s magnetized. That last one felt egregious. You have to have some speed in order for it to register and they made everything sort of auto correct for smoother lines. The onion skinning can really suck when you’re drawing with black because if you go off a layer, it lightens the colors for unselected layers and black can blend into the onion skinning. Also, the onion skin effect takes from every layer rather than the one you selected like in the OG. You can still do this by turning off layer visibility, but that requires hitting the L&R buttons and those things can degrade a lot if you put your DS in your pocket as much as I do. The UI’s so big they could have put that in regularly just like in OG Flip. Also, onion skin layers blend into each other rather than layer over top. Personally, I just find that really hard to tell what’s what. I much prefer how the OG did it. If I boiled it down it’s all that headache in 3D or the OG’s lopsided drawings. It’s more close than you think, but I switched to 3D with not much choice. Also, the 3DS has a shorter battery life. Sudomemo: I heard the guys running it have obtained the original Flipnote Hatena server. Reportedly to have I think 85-90% of all Flipnotes if I remember right. Might be all. They have a patreon and if it meets a threshold, they will put it back online for everyone to see. Pretty exciting. I don’t mind seeing my old art again. It’s Internet and gaming history, which is something that sadly doesn’t get enough preservation of.
Wow. I had Flipnote Studios and I still have my DSI to this day. That Ending Music got to me when I used to watch the animations of food criminal that was either the Mario one or the Michael Jackson one.
I wish I could find my friends from Flipnote again. Tell them their encouragement back then is the reason I'm an artist today. Wherever you guys are, I hope you're out there following your dreams and still drawing.
Oh wow. A high quality, in depth video on flipnote as a whole. Didn't go as in depth with all the general communities it ended up spawning or the big names on the platform, but that's cool. Really disheartening to have been there from the day the service started, to the day it ended. A lot of people's hard work really just vanished on that last day. It's sad that they didn't do what vine did and archive everything before pulling the plug. At least then it would look like those 3-4 years happened. This app was such a good intro to animation too. Not only did it help introduce new artists to the medium, but it also taught its user base how to work around strict limitations in both color usage and memory restrictions. I wouldn't trade the years I've spent on Hatena for anything, and I'm proud to have been one of its contributors.
I remember when my series got on the popular page for the first time my 13-year old little heart slipped a beat :') whatta innocent time that was RIP Flipnote Hatena
I remember flipnote so vividly, I wasn't allowed to go onto youtube or newgrounds so I got all my memes there I spent hundreds of hours just watching short clips

Omg I miss flipnote so much :( it was such a big part of my childhood, I loved watching them and making them. I remember making an animation for the gummy bear song on UA-cam lol
Still waiting for Nintendo to release a Wacom styled Stylist and bring....wait for it..... Flipnote Switch. As a Animator myself, bring Animators and future Animators together in one place for Switch. I swear, this App was one of the things that inspired me to be a Animator today. Thank you Flipnote Animators.
Flipnote Hatena.. I had my first online friend there in one of the chat rooms, her username was karime. Haven’t talked to her in years but I have never forgotten our conversations. Those were the days, I guess 😩
Flipnote is what introduced me to Animation. I already had SOME prior knowledge as a 7 year old child. I knew there was some effort put into anything Animated but never on such a huge scale I couldn't comprehend at the time. Its really opened my eyes to Art and Animation as a whole and is my favourite medium for film story telling. Nowadays I always appreciate all the work put into projects when I'm watching something animated whether it be TV Shows, Movies, Anime or UA-cam Webshows and I have Flipnote Hatena to thank for all this :)
Does anyone remember a manga someone drew that had regular releases? It was one of those flipnotes you had to download so you could read it page by page. I was young and didn’t know anything about anime/manga so they may’ve just been copying a popular story but man I was so hooked
It's sad man. So many great communities and creators began with Flipnote Hatena and Nintendo really did them dirty. Considering how the Switch hardly ever uses its tough screen in its games, I don't see this media platform ever being revived anytime soon. I remember my sister making an account named "Hawkeyes" where she made many great Flipnotes and followed many great creators like Epic Guitar. Now, it's all just a distant memory.
itd be cool if they made a physical version bundled with a pen (maybe even with slight pressure sensitivity..?) for the switch. it could be a portable fledged out digital animation program yet still simple.
I actually used to cover stuff about the Japanese release of Flipnote Studio 3D and its remaining online services in a Facebook page. Safe to say, despite the creative forces on there, the service "Flipnote Gallery: World" itself requires you real money for almost every action, whether it be accessing the gallery, downloading, commenting, hell even posting a flipnote itself costs you your hard earned money. Also, if your flipnote does not receive ratings at all(in this case, the "stars" equivalent: "coins"), it will be automatically deleted off Nintendo's servers after 10 days, unless you paid with a "Star Coin" that you can purcahse for uploading it. Because of this, Star Begging from Flipnote Hatena became Coin Begging, a way for animators to keep their work up on the big N's servers. And I think that was the reason why this was never brought over to the international release of the software. Other than that, the reason why Flipnote Gallery: Friends, a Spotpass-Friends-only service was canned because of "offensive material" being distributed over Spotpass in Japan. (Heavily related to the Swapnote scandal.) It was heartbreaking when Gallery World ended since there's no direct way to just watch flipnotes on the same app all day without having to load up the janky UA-cam app at the time.
Flipnote was pretty much my life as a kid, it helped develop my art skills and have a passion for animation. Sad that it the online service ended with the successor being brought to the US barebones compared to the japanese version. Hopefully nintendo will consider make a new app that could help bring back what is now a niche community left in fanmade servers that dont seem that will last very long.

*Why are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my Flipnotes... And my stars... even my downloads. The memories I've lost... The creators I've lost... won't stop hurting. It's like they're all still there. You feel it, too, don't you?*
Oh man, seeing one of my old flipnotes used in here was a shock lmao. The promise of flipnote 3d was one of the only reasons why I got a 3ds so you can imagine how pissed I was. Good video, it brought back a lot of memories.
Same dude, I was like getting all mad at my mom with my little kid VIOLENCE like, "WHERE'S FLIPNOTE MA, IT'S NOT ON THE ESHOP WHAT THE HECK?"
It’s crazy to think that years ago I used to watch your flipnotes and awe at how cool they were and tried to make my own because of creators like you, what a crazy feeling
The best song. 4:03
I remember that one! I recognized a few others in the video too, I even still have one saved on my DSI. Really cool to see you here :)
Wow i still have that flipnote on my dsi

I decided not to because of copyright issues, would've been a bit out of place too but whatever.
Let's make Flipnote community lasts forever if we all together colaborate!

I own this app from the DSi XL
Hopefully for free too :')

if you've uploaded flipnotes to hatena, they're not gone. the owner of sudomemo has all the hatena and flipnote gallery flipnotes in an archive, its not public yet tho
You have any clue when the archives will be released? Because when I go on that website all there is is a bunch of music videos and such.
Oh no. My terrible 2010 flipnotes will possibly be unearthed one day. That's a spooky thought.
Please, I know it's been a year since you commented this but, do you know if its public yet? And how can we get them
@@TheSagesSon sorry i don't think it's public still, the account @FlipnoteArchive hasn't posted since last November

He was trying to pick up chicks one night, he didn't last long before getting banned.
darkghor So you’re the guy who created it, I still have it on my DSI.
Most people in the old stories didn’t know they were visited by gods until later, either
darkghor I salute you for helping those poor girls. Chris(tine)-chan is just a horrible person.
I remember that
Damn that song at the end really hit me with the nostalgia! I was not prepared for that! 😭😭😭

Flipnote: basically tiktok but it’s good and for early 2000’s kids
nah it's a creative outlet for children to learn to draw and animate while observing other’s animations and learning from those
basically vine for the wee little lads who want to animate stuff
its none of that shit its flipnote. Never compare
Nah Flipnote is like having a sticky pad, and being able to erase it over and over along with sharing them
Flipnote is it's own thing
Flipnote needs to stay a product of 2008-13. I fear of what we would see if flipnote was released nowadays. Especially edgy "humor".
I really think we should access all the animations the people made. Some are lost forever. We should be able to access it but not actually make any more
i dont want my flipnote memories be ruined by some edgy reddit kiddies because "ruining something is the definition of humor guize!1!"
Flipnote Studio 3D
it has been released recently
they released it for 3ds an upgraded it by just making the pixel count higher
Flipnote was one of the biggest thing that made me and my brother so close as kids. Now that he's doing college in another state it makes me happy to have such good common memories.

Nah I will never forget Hatena, literally what my childhood was. Still in contact and have met friends I met 10 years ago on there. It’s the best I wish it never ended
flipnotes were my life and have impacted me heavily, to this day i continue to animate, and i doubt i would be if flipnotes never existed.
Does anyone else remember the Flipnote Hatena vs Door series by Boss? Bruh, that shit was the infinity war of my childhood
I remember going ham downloading everything I liked when the word got out Hatena was ending😔

This is the only flipnote I need in my life.
I forgot this one existed but when I saw it I got so happy
I loved flipnote hatena on the dsi. I spent a lot of time animating stick fights (this was the one and only time I tried my hand at animation). I uploaded a few of them but most of them were unfinished and just sat there on my sd card. I sold my dsi tough... I wish I had saved my animations somewhere.
Um, don't get your hopes up just yet as it is still a work in progress but the same creator of Sudomemo is working on a back-up of every flipnote ever made so you might be able to get that stuff back... eventually... if you know your old username.
Dude this was my childhood don’t remind me on what we cant bring back 😭

I remember when my cousins and their parents came over for a month and it was so fun. It was Black Friday and all the parents were gone, and my cousins were asleep. I remember lying under the pool table, watching Flipnotes on Hatena the entire night. It felt like the longest night ever, in a good way. I miss being that young.
Aw dude I can feel the nostalgia
i cant believe this but i keep seeing some of my old friends in this video from flipnote featured here. like Spike and some others haha.I actually was very afraid one of my videos would show up in here. theres a few ceators in here that i can even name even though ita been so long ago.

@Space Fox you made animation for a living?
haha flipnote is still the reason why i animate today on youtube
tbh I remember making a few channels on there but i forgot the names.... mostly warrior cats and like one sonic one
flipnote is how i found songs like stamp on the ground, loco, radio hardcore and a few others!
So many great child hood memories from this app, I made friends on this, and I still am friends with them 7 years later. Insane.
I thought I'd just get this off my chest and say all this out publicly so maybe now I can go down a path of self betterment and finally look past this.
uh
my nintendo?
You can still get flipnote studio 3d on my nintendo in case you were still wondering.
support.sudomemo.net/setup
This should help if you have flipnote.

Sudomemo archived every flipnote on a hard drive
carlospaul oh did that finally get decrypted?

Flipnote studio was the original

I actually remember making these! My friends used to tell me that my animations was great! Which made me happy. It was the best!
I met my wife on a flipnote hatena chat room. (-: we met when we were 12/13 and now we are 23/24. For this reason I will never forget Hatena. RIP
The outro gave me flash backs to The June Archives...
itd be cool if they made a physical version bundled with a pen (maybe even with slight pressure sensitivity..?) for the switch. it could be a portable fledged out digital animation program yet still simple.

"oh it looks like the black one just died, hahaha"
The memes of the early 2000s. Great times tbh
(Heavily related to the Swapnote scandal.)
It was heartbreaking when Gallery World ended since there's no direct way to just watch flipnotes on the same app all day without having to load up the janky UA-cam app at the time.
