  • This is Contralto Ewa Podles sing the Anna's aria from the oratorio Il Ritorno di Tobia by J.Haydn. In the candenza she hits a natural high D (A=440) , the highest note i heard from her so far. The other high D's known like in Dover giustiza are in A= 415 ( wich became a C sharp in pure notes)

    There are sopranos, mezzos, contraltos, etc etc and there is Ewa Poddles, the woman is a league of her own, I've never heard anything like her, JUST AMAZING!!! Too bad the stupid Met management didn't do what they were supposed to do, which would have been go out of their way to get her. She sang one performance of "Rinaldo" as second cast to Marilyn Horne (give me a break!!! Not that Horne was bad, not at all but nobody like Ewa) and, after many years, she finally came back to sing La Cieca in Gioconda, she blew me away!!!

      I wonder if her employment at the Met had something to do with the way they do (or don't quite) understand Baroque over there - in that they may have thought they needed big local names like Horne and Ramey to carry a Baroque opera.

      @@ddehggial9932 :: I think the Met wanted to make money which is understandable, especially since it doesn't get the support from Government Subsidies & struggles to get new audiences.
      M.H. has paid operatic " dues " & deserves Met considerations ; but I'm sure even her jaw must have dropped when she heard this great contralto voice.

    Ewa's voice has become one of my favorite female voices of all time. Odd as it may sound, I like her voice for some reasons similar to why I like a lot of classic heavy metal voices! Namely Rob Halford. We're talking about voices with consistent vibrato, rather hefty instruments that are steeped in darkness and imbued with the dramatic, though if need be, the lightening and flexibility aspect isn't lost upon by any stretch.
    I respect their opinion, though really don't care for the purists' point of view that the sections of Ewa's vocal range are too differentiating. Akin to Rob Halford channeling his full voice well into the 5th, (and even at its extreme adopting almost a whistle characteristic when he reached a full C6 once), I completely agree her frustration with critics pointing this out. She has struck me as a very sensible singer as well as a brilliant one, knowing full well how unhealthy it would be to try to hit certain notes using the wrong part of her voice. I doubt she would want to go for in her mid-range whilst sounding masculine. Of course there are fairly obvious tonal changes! That's part of the appeal because there's a really tangible idea of her vocal arsenal, and you just know that she has chosen her role to the best of her ability, and not in accordance to fashion.
    Very much a correlation between two very different voices liked for the same principles in expression.

      Michael Gadsby ::
      Thank you for the "Rob Halford" reference.
      I think you're right about her voice & other opera singers w / incredible ranges of sound.
      Huguette Tourangeau is / was a great "soprano-contralto". Her vocal "masculinity" was staggering. You should hear her recording of Donizett's _Maria Stuarda_ w / Joan Sutherland. Her upper register sounded like a soprano. The critics dragged her over the coals for having an "uneven" voice, but audiences couldn't believe what they were hearing from this singer. She has a solo recording w / Richard Bonynge conducting. _( Arias from Forgotten Operas )_ [ Her only solo. ]
      A long time ago Ewa Podles sounded very different. You wouldn't recognize her voice, back then. It was so beautifully lyrical.
      I will definitely check out Rob Halford.
      Thanks !

    Bonjour, je me permets de mettre un petit commentaire sous cette vidéo car j'ai lu attentivement ce que vous écrivez à propos des catégories vocales. Toutes mes études de chant j'ai été "embêté" par des jurys qui ne savaient pas où me "ranger" et qui étaient surpris que je chante des choses différentes qui pourtant m'allaient (en toute modestie) plutôt bien vocalement parlant. Pourquoi ne peut-on pas accepter que les gens sont tous uniques avec leurs qualités et leurs défauts?
    On oublie aussi souvent que pendant très longtemps, il n'y avait pas de catégorie vocale puisque les compositeurs écrivaient pour une personne en particulier, donc pour une voix qu'ils connaissaient. Pourquoi donc ne pourrait-on pas uniquement s'attacher au fait que "ce soit bien fait" et arrêter d'essayer de comparer les gens et de les ranger dans une boite?
    Sinon merci pour cette vidéo :)

    i don't know why many mezzo's do that,maybe it sounds more exotic.Anyhow,its the passagios that determine what voice"Fach" you are,not the colour or the choices.Her passagio's gave her away so to speak.I sincerely don't know why many mezzo's want to be contraltos.I am one,thats for sure.Its nice to have this "timbre" but the hight limitations are not so nice.And i have a perfect technique and no wear and tear for almoest 28 years as a professional operasinger.Who cares if you can sing a "Sarastro" low F3.Its the hight that counts and pays.Thats for sure too!!!She is an incredible singer,whatever her choices or ideas.But there is so much bla bla going around amongst singers that it is nice to know a couple of indisputable facts to hold on to!!!!

    • @sonqualnave
      @sonqualnave  7 років тому +1

      I don't think that it's only the passagio that determines a voice. it's not like, if you have a passagio on this note you are only this or you have it on this one you are that... I think there are much more elements to take in consideration, the coulour of the voice is also very important, the physical sensations of the singer, and the place where the singer feels really at home in his/her voice. Especially when you have a very long voice where you could pratically choose which *fach" you wanna be. So I try to be a bot more open about this. I always feels weird when other people try to just say "Oh, this singer thought all his carreer he/she was this but in fact " I THINK" that he or she is actually that..." I hate when people try to that with my voice, and tell me what I am (of course at the begining of your studies at some point you need an external ear and expertise to learn about your voice but still..) , so I personnally try not to do that with other colleagues/singers. But thanks to share your advice. Mrs Podles has indeed a very unic intrument otherwise people would not be so passionate about it.

      It's totally wrong. It is primarily the color of voice that determines the range of a voice. The same note issued by several instruments will not give the same sound. It's not the extension of the voice that counts ! A mezzo can go down to the low D ! A contralto can also go up to the high C ! The passagios and the extension of the voice are only auxiliaries. The color is EVERYTHING.

    There is no doubt that Podles has an unusual instrument, her sound has, however, never given me goosebumps. I find her fast vibrato most disturbing, and I cannot help but wonder how dark her voice would be, if she did not darken it so much by pulling her tongue back. This is particularly easy to hear in her chest voice. I would prefer more squillo and less scuro.
