She is the definition of a "full-throated" sound. The voice comes literally from deep inside. I saw her several times live in recital and in opera roles, the most memorable being the title role in Handel's Guilio Cesare.
Splendida.
O mon amie, quelle faveur, Et quel ordre inhumain!
5:56 I wish i could look at the score with this cadenza that Podles, Larmore, Crebassa and Kassarova do at the end... I HEARD it was written by Vioradot, but i never saw a manuscript or an edition with this cadenza, pity.
That's a so long time ago, when Radio-Canada still showed classical concerts sometimes. Now, even the cultural channel (ARTV) doesn't show them. In the last 3 years, on public TV in Canada, we've only got a Messiah (condensed in an hour) and Beethoven's 9th symphony (with speakers during the 3rd movement).
In fact Gluck recycled it from his opera Don Juan - which is why the style differs so markedly from the rest of Orphée's arias - and between them Berlioz and Viardot (also a composer, who wrote her own cadenza for this) turned it into an OTT showstopper! I prefer Baker's Orfeo version (Addio, addio, o miei sospiri) since she does justice to the music and doesn't just try to show off à la Viardot.
I do not agree to that. It is not showing off; it is just the most elaborate ending of an act. You simply have to go out with a bang. Viardot did understand that perfectly. On the other hand: Dame Janet Baker is indeed a gem too! Podles is the best though

Nobody can sing like that and nobody will. It is only one La Podles! Kazik

Absolutely extraordinary! Podles is at her best here, and this performance reveals what makes her one of a kind!
She's such an expressive singer. Excellent diction here too! Phenomenal as always.

*_She's NOT human & NOT from this vocal planet !_*
Ewa can sing all opera from baroque to modern. I feel grateful that I have heard her sing in person in Giulio Cesare in Seattle. What a vocal range!!

La voce regina

in 2008, La Cieca in La Gioconda, and she was a great succes (in the smallest role). And nothing for 24 years before...

It's true Goddess do walk the earth.
@leprincebeaumont ...condivido in pieno

Has she ever sung at the Met in NY?

@@misscameroon8062 Voltaire1377 is absolutely right
I loved it but the cadenza was overdone to the point I forgot what she was singing.
Fioritura covers a multitude of sins. Suggest Schuman-Heink, Besanzoni, Tourel,
