This is why this type of old school drag is so wonderful. Paul is a naturally gifted comedian with razor sharp wit, but stick him in the wig and make up as Lily and it’s a thousand times funnier and more outrageous.
I hate this new generation and I'm relatively young. All these instagram queens who only know how to look good in a photo... I'm a much bigger fan of the queens who put in the work and know their craft!
He wasn't on coke for this interview of course - which weakens the heart and leads to early death through heart problems - despite Mick Jagger famously saying that the only thing that the Rolling Stones had to avoid were "Drugs, booze and Lily Savage." Unfortunately his cocaine intake was far too much for even the Stones, which caused heart problems, but he lived a short and very bright life because of it.
September 2023 and it just hit me that Parky, Lily and Babs are all gone. Wonderful legacies from all three, but still bloody sad that they're no longer with us.

Now that is drag. In the UK we didn't have the pageants and the ballrooms. We had comedians like this who were beacons of hope and laughter, performing in pubs, to the LGBT community who needed somewhere they could chuckle during dark times. That's why our version of drag race provides slightly different talent, that doesn't always work on the main stage. No death drops. No 'ruveals'. No shantay. No sashay. Just unrelenting talent. RIP Paul O'Grady. Thank you for being on the telly when I was a young gay kid. Think you taught my parents a lot on blankety blank!
Lily also played 'working men's' clubs in rough and working class areas across the country, especially Blackpool. He played to the most diverse crowds and went down a storm every time. A trailblazer.

I was lucky enough to see Lily Savage live in Blackpool when I was 18. One of the funniest nights of my life. I cried with laughter from the moment she stepped out on stage. My stomach, sides and face hurt from laughing so much. I miss Lily, I wish she'd come back. Legend!!!

We used to wet ourselves laughing at Lily and crying with Paul on the dog shows. We never missed his teatime show either. If he was on we were watching or listening. I genuinely liked Paul in all his roles. He was always so funny without being smutty. His “love of dogs” revealed his kind heart and I never missed an episode. Genuinely saddened to hear of his passing. He will be greatly missed but remembered with warmth. 💕💕💕

Paul O’Grady hates RuPaul’s Drag Race lol. He said in an interview that it’s more to do with being a supermodel than with being a drag queen, and to an extent, he has a point. There are queens that go on that show now that have absolutely no idea the history behind the art, or even the LGBT+ movement as a whole. But at the same time, the show (while a heavily watered down version of drag) has allowed the art to reach many more people, and it has got more people into their local bars and clubs to support their local queens. But there are a lot of people that only appreciate drag as far as they see it on their television - and that, to me, and to Savage/O’Grady, is an issue.
