Great video! I’ve been using a Viltrox speedbooster with the sigma 18-35 1.8 for videos on my channel. So happy with the quality and color from the footage for this price. I’m ALWAYS using your lut btw, makes the footage 10X easier to grade. I recommend it everyone who has a pocket cam🙌🏻
Nice Video. You are absolutly right. It is the best camera for small commercials, short films e.c. My friends and me started a electric car consulting company. We do youtube V logs were we testing cars, for that i bought the gh5. Here the stabilisation is a real advantage, because i can film quick b roll without a big rig, while maintaining stability. So for V logging, witch becomes bigger and bigger, the pocket may not be best in its price range. But for all other planed stuff, it is great.
For several years I used DSLR to my documentaries for TV, 40+ until now. Lot of them about hunting, fishing,... Used allways Nikon D800 and D810 with viewfinder for focus. I switched some months ago to this awesome 4K camera, because the DSLR body shape as perfect for me. I was just waiting for it. Never used autofocus since 2010, and I use 80% of the time viewfinder. I just finished my first documentary with it and I'm very happy with the result. It's amazing! The only big difference from my old full frames of course is the deep of field. More difficult to focus but i'm almost OK with that. Just need some time with it. For my work style is just perfect. For the batteries just ordered two small pocket vmounts, I just can put it in a small waist bag. If I need to disconect for a moment no problem, there is the original battery on it for some moments. And remember, the most important is not the camera, it's the story!
I love this camera and Blackmagic for giving us 120 FPS. I have the Sony FS5 and was about to buy an Atomos recorder to unlock Raw, but the BMPCC4K had just come out and was cheaper by €300-400 at the time, so I got the BM instead and now I can record raw internally - wow! I also was going to Buy DaVinci Resolve(5/5), so like you said I really got this camera for €1000. I used it handheld with the Panasonic 12-35ii in a recent video of Istanbul (on my channel if anyone interested) and recorded raw to an SD card! Thanks for sharing your work Matteo, your channel is great - and it was nice to see you have shot around Ireland in the past too!
Love mine as well. Had to send it in once (cause I broke the HDMI port). Had it back in under a week including shipping! This camera is a beast! The whole ecosystem is!
I'm with you Matteo. I have 2 P4K's and now the 6K and BM has changed the way I work for the better. I also have the Ursa G2 which is even better in terms of image quality. Just amazing. Great work by the way.
On point with EVERYTHING! We've used two BMPCC4K's and a 6K on shoots for about a year. I especially wish that the form factor was less "DSLR" and more "Cinema camera". It IS called a "pocket cinema" camera after all.
I love my Bmpcc4k! The Akku is no problem when rigged with a dummy battery and npf or v mount. The biggest problem is the display, also with a Monitor mounted you still need to do ISO adjustments etc. with the build in one.
Thank you Matteo for an absolutely beautiful and informative video! You'r shoots are stunning and inspiring! I just got my BMPCC4K and are in pure awe of its performance. Always want to travel light when filming so I use the new 512 GB SD cards and 7 batteries. I use the 0.64 Metabones with Canon 24-105 with IS and the Canon 50mm 1.2 for super shallow depth of field. So happy with this camera! Its like everything becomes art.
I’ve had mine for 6 months and it’s still brand new in the box. The only thing I’ve bought so far is the metabones pl to micro 4/3 speedbuster. As soon as the semester is over I will get to shoot with it finally. Thanks for the video it really inspired me to go out and shoot ASAP.
I'm ready to upgrade from an old Blackmagic Production 4k camera but im not sure if the newer BMPCC 6K is worth it of if I should just get the 4k version...
I love it. I first got the 12-35 lens with auto. It’s good but I love the canon 24mm & 50mm fd lenses. Just rock. Spent yesterday learning shutter speed and getting smooth footage.
Funny how this comes up 11 months later right when I’m considering buying the Pocket 4K. Totally agree about the form factor but considering how good everything else is I’ll just put up with that. Keen to know what your thoughts are on the 4K vs 6K. Absolutely sensational footage and grading! Thanks Matteo
thank you for posting these - i purchased this camera after watching your amazing footage. since i’m a lowly musician i was wondering if you could make a video on focusing tips (and tips on holding the camera steady )
Firstly let me compliment your work. You're a superb cinematographer and the results you've achieved and shown here are beautiful. As for the camera, I own one and agree with everything you've said. It's a remarkable piece of equipment and other than the form factor, it's an absolute joy to use.
I didn't see you address audio in this video. As a documentary filmmaker who operated and records his own sound, clean sound from 2 sources (shotgun as a failsafe) and a Lav mic, I need two clean preamps, one of which can deliver phantom power to my Sen MKH 416... My fear is using the 1/8" input for my lav will be noisy. Recording 200 hours of footage and syncing all audio in post is not an option for verite filmmaking. This is why C200 or C300 with 2XLR inputs is so critical. Thoughts about this predicament as I really would like to move to the BMPCC6k.
Hey! I usually have a sound guy, but otherwise I use rode lav and sound pretty good. I didn’t cover sound since I am not an expert, I would say for small projects my lav work just fine, otherwise I would hire a proper technician. Always trust them better ahah
Great video. I loved your shots. I was considering getting a Sony A6500 or a Canon 90D but you may have convinced me this is the way I want to go. What are your go to lens for this camera?
Just bought this camera and I cannot wait to begin using it. No Ibis or continuous AF was not a dealbreaker for me, going back to the old ways and feeling so excited. The image of this camera is so unique compared to others in this price range! Awesome video, thanks!
Many years ago I was a cameraman and since I have got back into cinematography I have been surprised at the reliance on autofocus!! I got myself an original BMPCC but have been looking at turning that into my B and getting a 4k. Your review has made up my mind lol! BTW your visuals are stunning !
Great video man! I get you about the complaints that people have with like autofotocus or ibis. I think because of the price people see and expect this camera in a wrong way. This is a mini cinema camera, that's priced in a range that's similar to a lot of good mirroless cameras. So people expect a few consumer / prosumer features because this thing doesn't cost 5000 to 7000 or 10000 euros. People who have shot commercial, music and narrative have probably also learned to work with manual focus, and have rigs and other things to stabilise the whole setup.
If you have to decide: Full rigged BMPCC 4k or a used C200? I'm a one man show, so I have nobody pulling focus during special shots. I want to focus my work on sport/outdoor commercials. Which camera would you recommend?
Jonathan Stütz problem with the c200 is that you either shoot huge raw files or crappy and compressed mp4. Nothing in the middle. I would do ursa mini then.
Matteo Bertoli Visuals But I would be ok with these huge file sizes. What you become out of is in my opinion fantastic. And you get things like Autofocus, 15 Stops DR, build in ND, nice form factor
Jonathan Stütz the C200 is a fantastic camera for one man band type stuff. I say this as an owner of both C200 and BMPCC4K. If you nail exposure and white balance (which you should be doing anyways), the 8-bit footage holds up very well. I shoot projects that get displayed on a giant LED wall in an auditorium and the 8-bit looks beautiful on that screen.
i have the Blackmagic and I used it for a documentary recently. i was very happy with the way it turned out. the bm is versatile and is great for everything you said at the end and that is my primary area of use. just need to build out my sense collection.
I've used many different cameras (Red and Arri among the others) but I've recently bought a pocket 4k for myself and I love it. I think it's the best camera I've ever used. A pocket beast! Anyways, thank you so much for always being such an inspiring and honest person!
Nice review and great looking footage! 👍 I skipped the BMPCC4K completely and got a Z-Cam 2. Being able to shoot 120fps in 4K (160fps now), support for the big Sony NPF batteries that last for over 3 hours or more, the very high quality h.265 codec with files that don’t use much drive space, and the amazing support (like being able to email the CEO and getting a reply the same day), it was a no brainer.
I am certainly wanting the 4k and maybe the 6k as I have EF glass it's a bit hard cos once you have the speed booster the costs are very similar - but I think the 6k is unnecessary for my needs. I do very little actual work and it's more for personal projects. I own a 6D mkii so the autofocus would be nice but I know how too focus well so. Or toouch a Biggie
Quick question! Going to be building a rig soon. With a V mount battery system and a SmallHD FOCUS, the Camera can be powered without a dummy battery- just the right cable correct? Secondly, the SmallHD monitor does require a dummy battery if i’d like to power that from the V mount battery as well right? Thank you!
Matteo, I Absolutely Love! that you shoot the Vintage FD Lenses. It truly sets you, way apart from everyone else. And the Super Takkumar, WOW! But? I have a question?? Matteo You mentioned that you purchased your BMPCC4K in Mexico... Was there a big price difference in Mexico?
I bought a Pocket 4K this summer with a Viltrox EF adapter, that I later replaced with an M II adapter. The camera was fine until one day when somehow it got a dust speck stuck inbetween the sensor glass and the sensor. Seemed like something that was left from manufacturing. I sent it in for a repair, even though a 5 minute repair would have helped. Got a brand new camera with two more Resolve licenses… Strange thing. But it took three weeks to get a new camera.
Sergio Martinez it’s a sony npf one, not sure if there is an actual model. It was included with the smallhd monitor. Camera will probably last a couple of hours, monitor half day
Did you use the same power source for the monitor and camera? Because you got no ground loop problems that fried the hdmi port. Many people seem to get this problem. If you used only one source for monitor+cam, did you use cables with voltage regulators? I'm just asking because i would love to just power the system out of V mount batteries.
A real cinematographer knows how to light, compose, stabilize and pull focus... sooo, no need for autofocus, IBIS or super high ISO cameras. Great video Mateo!
@@LordJagd That is correct! I've seen many videographers on youtube complaining about noise on cinema cameras, or that they lack autofocus LOL they always go back to their sonys o canons... there is a big difference between a videographer and a cinematographer.
When shooting in 24fps do you use a shoulder rig for moving shots for stabilization? Thinking of upgrading from a GH5 to the BMPCC 4K or 6K and my only concern is not being able to shoot 24fps in run and gun situations because of the lack of IBIS
Beautiful footage. I have the Panasonic GH5 & GH5s with Sigma 18-35mm lenses via Metabones speedbooster. But I'm wondering what should be my next lens purchase...Came here for inspiration. :)
I have the gh5s, and LOVE using it. It’s easy to set up and has a ton of great features, and the image is great. I had an option grab a bmpcc4k and since I’ve been using it, I can say it’s image blows the gh5s away. The only truck was using resolve from premier but man, the image quality is outstanding.
Love this video.. so helpful, and getting me closer to pulling the trigger now. I did noticed (around 1:20) that your Canon 24mm gives you a green flare, that I get with my Lumix Leica lenses. Not sure if it's the lens coating or what, but it makes me a little crazy. I love flare, just not green.
Great comprehensive review! Do you shoot or have you shot on the BMPCC 6K? At our studio we Shoot on the C200 and the 6k with our old A7s cameras when we need a few more cameras on bigger shoots. Thinking about getting the 4k as a cheap alternative B-Cam to pair with the 6k or c200 as needed. Is it worth stepping down to the 4k to save a bit of money? Or is it better to just pay a little more for another 6k?
Hey dude.. At 01:08 What is the name of the cold shoe adapter which is holding the battery plate? I'm also looking for same thing but not able to search it online...
finally good testimonial (if I can use this word) about the camera. When it came out - I knew that's this camera is exactly what I wanted. Yes. I'm not the owner of one for now. But after your video, I'm just like: "yup. That's what I need", "yup. That's not a problem for me either" on every topic. Thank you for the video. Have a good one.
Interesting video, thank you. One thing I noticed, however, is that almost 99% of the shots in this video are slo-mo. You mentioned run and gun and lack of stabilisation. How is the camera in a fast paced run and gun situation?
Fully enjoyed the whole video just bought one myself and all the images are fricking great. love the flares on the 8mm SLR magic made me want to buy one to play with it, I imagined it will be around 10mm with .71 speedbooster right? also were all the FD lens paired with FD to MFT speedbooster or the FD are modified into EF? Cheers
Hey Matteo, have you ever had problems with unusual noise with the BMPCC4K? I can't really put my finger on it. I often get grainy images, even though I am shooting on 100 ISO. Especially noticable when light leaks hit a black surface, such as a black T-Shirt. That seems so odd to me. Why should light cause a grainy image. Any thoughts?
I'm still getting started as a videomaker. For now I just added a Video Assist monitor to my Dslr and I'm super happy with the usability. Adding an external monitor changed positively of my workflow. DR is committing at the first look but, once you get familiar with it, you learn how powerful that software is. BlackMagic ecosystem is great and the value for the money is unbeatable at the moment. Great footage as always!

Thanks Nolan!!! appreciate!
I may or may not have started my FD collection because of you :) Thanks for the inspiration
Pocket 4k is the first camera I've ever owned and I couldn't be happier with it.
Love mine as well. Had to send it in once (cause I broke the HDMI port). Had it back in under a week including shipping!
This camera is a beast! The whole ecosystem is!
Totally was worth the 9 month long wait :D
The biggest problem is the display, also with a Monitor mounted you still need to do ISO adjustments etc. with the build in one.
got it four weeks ago. finally a cam that i just love love love ...
this is the best BMPCC4k review
I got the one lut and buttery luts. I use them on the camera and they’re a must. I do prefer the one lut but that’s personal preference.
I think you might like the Z cam as well. It's a little more expensive than the pocket but it is more the cube format you are talking about.
You experience definitely inspired me. And also your showreel is breathtaking. Really really nice man.
Love this review, we watch lovely footages and BTS, not a UA-camr ‘s face talking 75% in front of the camera 🙏
Convinced me to get the camera along with my BMPCCs and Sigma fp. Thanks
I'm ready to upgrade from an old Blackmagic Production 4k camera but im not sure if the newer BMPCC 6K is worth it of if I should just get the 4k version...
Potato Face I would just get the 4K... that is what I decided...get another lens for the price of 6k
The 6k aint worth it imo. It has really bad rolling shutter
@@baqcasanke I've never noticed any and I've used x2 6K's daily for work for about 6 months now ...
A very useful review of your experience over the past year using this camera. Thanks for sharing. Oh, and my favorite shot at 3:46.
I love it. I first got the 12-35 lens with auto. It’s good but I love the canon 24mm & 50mm fd lenses. Just rock. Spent yesterday learning shutter speed and getting smooth footage.
Thank you! This was the most informative review I have seen for this camera!
Funny how this comes up 11 months later right when I’m considering buying the Pocket 4K. Totally agree about the form factor but considering how good everything else is I’ll just put up with that. Keen to know what your thoughts are on the 4K vs 6K. Absolutely sensational footage and grading! Thanks Matteo
thank you for posting these - i purchased this camera after watching your amazing footage. since i’m a lowly musician i was wondering if you could make a video on focusing tips (and tips on holding the camera steady )
how can u have in 1080p such a a good qualty , not washed screen . i dont have such a clean image quality in youtube , any recomendation? how to
Firstly let me compliment your work.
Pocket 4k! My first step up and out from the dslr world! Its almost like buying a camera for the first time experience
1:16 you said 4k 75 fps ? how please?? what setting.?
Great video and you have a wonderful way of presenting and delivering. Very informative and great images. 100% well done!
Jonathan Stütz well if you have tb to waste and need AF for sure. But at that point you shouldn’t even consider a bmpcc4k
Not interested in buying one but was curious, nice footage, good little review. Cheers.
Lofyne yeah, but I rather have BRAW and an incredible ecosystem. Never shot 120p in my life
Im hoping BlackMagic will still continue the Blackmagic micro cinema camera line. Btw all of your shots is so gorgeous
Where can I buy the adapter for the CANON LENS FD 24mm 1:2.8?
Thanks! In Mexico? I purchased my BMPCC4K in US. I brought it to Mexico for a job :)
Matteo, at 1:08 you are using an Anton Bauer battery, can I have the model number please? Also, how long does one of those last you?
Exactly. People who rely on those shortcuts will have a hard time using a real movie camera.
Got a 77D canon with a 18-35MM, thinking about buying the bmpcc4k with a shoulder rig or a bit more easier rig, handheld or something like that :D
How do you power the BMPCC4K?
Shark I use a v-lock battery, or most times I’m in studio so I just plug it in.
Cool. I have 2 vlok batteries but havent used
Love this video.. so helpful, and getting me closer to pulling the trigger now. I did noticed (around 1:20) that your Canon 24mm gives you a green flare, that I get with my Lumix Leica lenses. Not sure if it's the lens coating or what, but it makes me a little crazy. I love flare, just not green.
Clickumentary thanks! it’s not the lens depends from the light
Beautiful footage Matteo. And great review.
Or is it better to just pay a little more for another 6k?
thanks a lot!!! ill get the BMPCC4k GREAT VIDEO.
Hi - I only currently do very basic post work is b-raw easy to work with.
@6:29 - @6:37 - What kind of (shoulder) rig are you using here? Is that even an easyrig maybe?
None, just the camera in my hands
I’m still stuck on if I should get a GH5 or the BMPCC4K, I want to do BOTH documentary filmmaking, narrative filmmaking and music videos!
GH what?
Hey dude..
At 01:08
What is the name of the cold shoe adapter which is holding the battery plate?
I'm also looking for same thing but not able to search it online...
Thinking it **might** be the FOTGA DP500 III -- they're great.
finally good testimonial (if I can use this word) about the camera. When it came out - I knew that's this camera is exactly what I wanted. Yes. I'm not the owner of one for now. But after your video, I'm just like: "yup. That's what I need", "yup. That's not a problem for me either" on every topic.
Thank you for the video. Have a good one.
Great review and you make such valuable points!
How would you compare the BMPCC to the C100 in terms of image quality and usabilty?
Thanks so much!
Great video mate.
Please advise
BMPCC 4k or Nikkon Z6.
Mainly cine footage photos may be plus point.
Cheers
good for weddings? Looking at the 6K
Great footage as always!
nice return of experience!
Love mine! I would love a simple tutorial about how you expose for sunset and some of those harsher conditions. 🙌🏼😇
Can someone explain why you use a speed booster? Thx
