Thanks for putting this video out! My son in law has a 2016 Hyundai ELANTRA, which we believe is in need of a new transmission and we plan on replacing it ourselves to avoid getting bent over at the transmission shop. Your video is very insightful. Thanks again!
My wife Elantra just started with the same problem and same noise, I consider myself a skill mechanic person but now with your video definitely I will do this job, now hopefully I find a good deal, thank you brother good video 👌👍
That sucks about the transmission however it’s not to bad changing it out. Good luck with the swap and finding a good deal on a transmission. Thanks for watching the video and the feedback.
I am so impressed that you changed the transmission. Like this motives me to always think outside the box and rely yourself to work and save money. Like seriously you deserve a pad in a the back.
Same here, you can never tell the kind of mechanics we have these days. I'm still looking for a transmission for my 2015 accent. Kindly let me know if you find a good deal. Many thank
Young man, you are awesome, very good job. I’ve seen other “ mechanics “ perform the same job at a shop with all the tools and sophisticated equipment and have 1-3 guys helping. It’s only you NICE 👍🏽… Thank you for the feedback..
Thanks appreciate it. I do have help from the fam but tool wise I have bare minimum as most of us do. So I try to prove a point to others you can do big jobs just have to improvise on things.
Unfortunately transmission are on back order for my girlfriends 2016 Elantra, but as soon as it gets here I’ll be tackling this myself. Thank you for the details video, it will be an IMMENSE help for me and I’m sure plenty of others. Apparently these transmissions don’t last too long.
I watched this video cause I'm having to rebuild my engine in 2016 Elantra GT I had forgotten which way the flex plate went on, anyway I seen in one frame of your video which way. I watched the whole thing very good insightful video buddy thank you very much for putting such helpful info out for us to use.
i just completely broke my tansmission you know something broke when you hear a snapping sound so once i get the tranny going to use your very helpful guide to replace it thank you for this
Great vid.! Just had to do the same thing on MY daughter's car. Not the same symptoms, though. She ended up plowing the inside, vertical curb face of a round-a-bout. When picking the car up from the scene of the umfortimate event, I noticed the fluid on the ground & thought it was maybe a busted fitting or a line that was frayed. Got it home & started to assess, & noticed a busted pan. No big deal, right? Wrong! Pulled the pan & a small section of the case came with it. So a tranny R & R was clearly in my future. Your coverage of the job was excellent! No essential items were missed & no redundancies. U seem like a super cool fella.🤘
My trans just went bad on my Hyundai Accent this is giving me hope I can possibly do it myself. My dad was a mechanic for many years now retired so he’s got the tools necessary. I’d hate to junk my car to many memories made with it
Overall, again thank you, this is the exact same transmission, and engine bay, in my girl’s 2014-2017 Hyundai Accent, everything was so identical and this video helped out a lot. Thank you again (would you mind putting 2014-2017 Hyundai Accent on the title or description) thank you
Are you saying that 13 to 17 has the same automatic trans because I have a new trans that's on a 2016? I wanna put it on my 2013. But ebay listing shows 15 to 17 on transmission but 12 to 17 on motor. Can someone confirm these 6 speed auto trans are the same, just like the motor. It should be m6cf1 auto trans. Just wanna confirm I can relearn if need be because I'm a locksmith with lots of experience. If someone can confirm, I'll buy lunch.
@@segounlocks5029 from 2015 to 2017 it use a 6 speed transmission like elantra from the same years. but hyundai accent from 2011 till 2014 use a different one.
Thanks for showing how to do this and thanks for Your hard work on this Transmission Job.👍✌.I'm sure Your Daughter was very greatful for doing this for Her.Thanks.
Good video, man. It's really helpful. I'm doing mine in the shop, and I think I will hold the engine from the top instead of supporting it from the bottom
Great job. This is amazing. My 2015 Elantra went in for an oil leak and they said they had to pull the tranny to actually finish the job. Transmission went out 2 weeks later. Coincidence or not, it’s really weird. It didn’t whine like your car did. It just stopped going into great. I could still reverse though.
So much easier to remove your cv axles by taking the two lower bolts out of the strut and then folding the knuckle out. No need to mess around with ball joints! I just did a Hyundai Kona tranny swap this week that way.

Very good job, it was not seen that you bled the transmission oil lines to the radiator and you did not change the turbine oil, which is about a quarter and where did you buy the transmission?
Only a handful of people I have known that have taken out engines and transmissions on their driveway. One was my stepfather. He was a mechanic by trade but on the weekends he fixed his own cars.
I have the bare minimum tools and no shop like most of us. I hope this helps others to do their own projects and realize you don’t need a shop to save money
Wow! Awesome video. I really need your help though. I took my Hyndai Accent 2015 model to a mechanic for maintenance and my gear box is completely spoiled. Can you please help me get some to buy? Well im getting ready to do this on a friends car so thank you for sharing the video. Looks like a torch converter failure i have s friend that rebuilds transmissions so i just have to r&r it. With this video it should be s piece of cake
I am just curious there is no check engine light on before replacing the Transmission. The sound that comes when you pedal on the gas is a sign though!
Those 2 lights that are on.have to do with the front suspension, the abs, and the tracking control have to do with the electric power steering, it could be the inner& outer tierod since it works in conjunction you can turn them off by restting it or by taking either battery cable off .
When you put the torque converter bolts into the flex plate did you leave a small gap or did you screw the bolts down all the way into the torque converter? I have a 2005 hyundai elantra and I’m not sure if I need a small gap. There was a small gap when I took the transmission off the old engine.

Was going to ask if the transmissions from 2014 thru 2017 are interchangeable on the 1 8 liter? Lots of scrap yards say no but as long as the harness works it should interchange.
Similar situation here: giving it gas and I can hear a whine. Mine is a 2003. It sometimes jolts and now I can feel a grind. Only in 3rd gear does it mess up but now 2nd gear and messing up. I would love to put a new tranny in, but I literally just got a $600 job done on the car. I’m in a confused spot
@@str8burbn I want to say it’s the torque converter and/or flywheel as I just got it repaired for hard start and stalling at cold start. Great video. I would love to find a transmission for $200. Huge price difference for 1.8 liter and 2.0 liter transmission. 2 liter is $300. 1.8 liter is $2000 in a 2016. Why? No idea. I am jealous. Wish I had a 2 liter.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2013 Elantra, which is part of the 5th generation of these cars. It looks almost exactly like the one in the video. Do you think your demonstration would pertain to my car as well?
Just look on the bottom side of motor and see if you would have to remove the subframe. If you do securely hold the motor with jacks or blocks and remove subframe and than do the transmission removal should be close. And yes it will still help you
I'll be doing this on a '17 Sportage in the next day or 3. Looks to be a very similar process. On the Kia techinfo site, they mention reprogramming the TCM with the new transaxle's oil pressure values. Did you have to do anything like that with yours? Also, it's been suggested I flush the trans coolant lines. Did you do this? Do you know of any other resources or videos I might check out? You skip over a couple spots and I know you say "you can't mess it up" but you're wrong about that, bud. Ha. Thanks again for the video. We're going to try to make something similar for the sporty.
This just had a motor put in so new coolant and no I didn’t have to relearn the eco. However with the battery being disconnected during the whole job will usually reset everything.
U replace the motor on that car u have video I have the same car my is a 16 Hyundai elantra 2.0 GDI I going to get a new motor good job 👏 on the transmission video
Man, I got exhausted by just watching this. God bless you guys for the hard working. By the way, I just wondering if it is worth it to change the transmission. I check the price and it shows around 3500.
I am about to replace the transmission In my 2017 Elantra so this is very helpful thanks... 1 question though. EVERYWHERE I read says I have to reset my TCM after I put in the other transmission. Did you have to do that? If so, is there a way to do it without a scan tool?
@@Tradrnqi put a used transmission in mine but no i did not reset mine either... however it ran a little strange shifting rough and at crazy high and low RPMs for the first 10 or 20ish miles.. i am assuming it was my TCM doing a little adpative learning on its own.
Good job! Very nice video. Btw, what is the part number/model numbber of the transmission? Was it T-U_2997? And where did you get the trans from? Thanks
I have a 2017 Elantra, model after this one, 120k miles and need a trans thanks to the oil change shop emptying my trans instead of my oil, but I just picked up a trans from a 2019 with 18k miles on it for $300. I am wondering if I have to take it to Hyundai to reset the trans with their GDS scan. I'm trying to avoid that since it's $250, and I also have to buy new fluid for the new trans which is $25 a quart. Lol. Trying to do this as cheap as possible.
Overall, great video. Very helpful. Nice job showing where bolts are and their sizing. Only a little critique....The mounts were not explained how to remove, neither the flyheel or starter. You showed the install, just not the removal. You got 90% of it covered, just a couple of small things. Where did you find the replacement? Thanks again for posting.
I’m having transmission problems as well with my Elantra. The sound isn’t like this but it’s more a whining sound in park and drive. Took it to 3 different mechanic and 3!” Different answer. It’s stressing. I really don’t wanna purchase a new transmission. 1 saying could be a failing pump other saying water got in and other says it’s a bearing issue.
It’s my turn for this job, 2016 Elantra with only 80k miles. Customer stated about a 1-2 second delay in selecting drive and actual movement, then it slowly lost first gear, later only shifted in manual mode, then reverse gear only.
Ver informative, is the right way to check the transmission fluid level the engine on or off? and if you remember how many quarts you put in the torque before installation? Thanks
You check the fluid level with the car running and I had it in neutral. I put around a quart in the torque converter than filled the transmission till it came out of the plug on the front of the transmission before starting it. I than started the car and topped it off again than drove it just down the street and back and topped it off again. After that I went for a 10 min drive and checked again and it was good.
Hello there str8burbn, great video and you have an amazing talent, keep up the great work. My 2013 Hyundai Elantra has 188K miles and I have never serviced the transmission; it is running smooth as ever and Hyundai advertised it as a "maintenance free" transmission guaranteed for life. I worked in maintenance for 29 years in the Air Force, avionics though, and I know there is no such thing as something that is maintenance free. I want to do some preventive maintenance on it, at least change the fluid, is there anything else I should do? I have a Tundra with 212K miles on it and just replaced the fluid for the first time and the filter. Does the Elantra have a transmission fluid filter? Any advice would be great.
Thanks I appreciate it and as for the filter their is one but I would personally just drain and top off with new fluid. As for your Toyota truck it’s bulletproof so no worries with that one.
I would NOT replace the fluid on such high mileage vehicles. EVERY single time I did this (to two Volkswagens, and a 2009 sonata), the torque converter and/or clutches in the tranny SLIP. Why? ....because all the clutch material in the tranny fluid was making it a very "catchy" fluid that didn't slip easily, and by removing that non-slip fluid, the new fluid allows the heavily worn clutches to slip. I would never again, now knowing what I do, replace tranny fluid. I WOULD however consider draining the fluid and KEEPING it, and replace the filter as the filter may catch the larger debris, and the re-install the old tranny fluid.
Man hugely appreciate this video - so far i have the air box / battery cover / ball joints out - but you mentioned something at the beginning of the video about bolts into the flywheel that need "turning over" to get to - I have not done a transmission before - curious how you access these bolts that you could not reach when you were showing the video. thanks and appreciate you!
Third a cover on the bottom where the trans mounts to the engine. You take the cover off and you’ll have access to the flywheel bolts. You’ll just need to put a socket on the crank and rotate it around to get to all the flywheel bolts. Hope this is helpful and good luck you got this.
Thanks for the video,Sir!! Really, really helpful and comprehensive. One questions though. How well you need to hold the motor before removing the transmission mounts? Does the engine hang by itself without transmission?
Our 2013 Elantra makes a similar sound and only when accelerating. My husband is a well skilled mechanic and after seeing your videos and detailed information he is going to install a new transmission. But we would like to know when you replaced your daughter’s transmission did you take the car to the dealer to program the transmission after the replacement reinstall? Please let us know. Side note: I love that your son was out there helping you!
After the install their was no need for programming. As long as you put the same transmission in it than your ecu will run it the same no problem. My kids are always willing to help and love doing stuff with me it’s been so much fun getting my kids involved. Thanks for watching the video and good luck with your transmission swap you guys got this.
I'm about to change the transmission of my Hyundai Elantra but I have a doubt, several people have told me that after installing the transmission I would have to reprogram it or something like that, I didn't see you do it in your video, do you think it's necessary or would it just be to remove the old one and install the new transmission? Thank you, I hope you can answer
hey man were did you end up getting the transmission. i have looked everywhere i have a 2016 hyundai elantra SE and im needing a new transmission. im having such a hard time any help or just a point into the right direction would be fantastic. thanks in advance.
It should be if not close you might have to drop sub frame but not to difficult just support the motor really good 👍🏻. I found mine off KSL classifieds and got lucky

I currently have a 2016 Hyundai Elantra and my car is having transmission issues. I want to replace it, but idk because now they are breaking into the cars. They’ve already stolen my car once on Christmas Eve and then attempted again on New Year eve. So idek if I should also where did you get the new transmission? And was it a rebuilt one?
I have a question so I have a 2016 Hyundai Elantra 1.8. Can the 2013 Hyundai Elantra transmission fit ? My car goes in drive it’s just only does it one 2nd gear. I’m sure it’s the transmission looking for a good price . Let me know thanks !
Curious, how did you handle lifting that transmission? Did you lift it by yourself or a must 2 person? Didn't show in the video you unloading the new one or when you put it on top of the jack. I plan on making an attempt on changing my transmission (I got a Sentra like yours), looking to see how hard it will be lugging it around and throwing it on top of a jack.

I didn’t do the motor but you can do the motor swap. Just label everything and take your time you got it.
Man, I got exhausted by just watching this. God bless you guys for the hard working. By the way, I just wondering if it is worth it to change the transmission. I check the price and it shows around 3500.
Thanks man you’re awesome 👏
You bet
I am about to replace the transmission In my 2017 Elantra so this is very helpful thanks... 1 question though. EVERYWHERE I read says I have to reset my TCM after I put in the other transmission. Did you have to do that? If so, is there a way to do it without a scan tool?
I never reset my TCM and had no problems
@@str8burbn thanks bro there are ALOTTT more miles on mine I hope I don't have to either.
Good luck hopefully everything goes smooth like mine did
@@josephfordham3348 did you have to reset yours?
@@Tradrnqi put a used transmission in mine but no i did not reset mine either... however it ran a little strange shifting rough and at crazy high and low RPMs for the first 10 or 20ish miles.. i am assuming it was my TCM doing a little adpative learning on its own.
You're a great father . Good job 👏
Thanks for the video, nice tutorial 👍
Thanks
Hi 👋🏻, is the 2012 Elantra’s transmission same of 2015?
Mis respetos, lo hiciste solo y es mucho trabajo!
Gracias, te lo agradezco
Do you know how different this is to the manual transmission replacement process?
I’d imagine it’s way close and it will help you
Good job! Very nice video. Btw, what is the part number/model numbber of the transmission? Was it T-U_2997? And where did you get the trans from? Thanks
Awesome information & tutorial 👏 👌🏼 👍🏿 😀
I have a 2017 Elantra, model after this one, 120k miles and need a trans thanks to the oil change shop emptying my trans instead of my oil, but I just picked up a trans from a 2019 with 18k miles on it for $300. I am wondering if I have to take it to Hyundai to reset the trans with their GDS scan. I'm trying to avoid that since it's $250, and I also have to buy new fluid for the new trans which is $25 a quart. Lol. Trying to do this as cheap as possible.
Can't find where I took off the bracket on the back of the transmission by the passenger side cv axle by the firewall and also attaches too the engine
Thanks brother! Love having people willing to help the rest of us DIY this stuff!
We all got to save money one way or another
Interesting channel, I just subscribed
Heck yeah thanks appreciate it
Overall, great video.
Thanks and I appreciate the feed back as I’m still trying to video and get the job done quick at the same time.
Great video! Thank you for sharing it.
Damn that’s shity. I’d try just changing the fluid as it’s the cheapest starting point
It’s my turn for this job, 2016 Elantra with only 80k miles. Customer stated about a 1-2 second delay in selecting drive and actual movement, then it slowly lost first gear, later only shifted in manual mode, then reverse gear only.
It’s not bad
Ver informative, is the right way to check the transmission fluid level the engine on or off? and if you remember how many quarts you put in the torque before installation? Thanks
You check the fluid level with the car running and I had it in neutral. I put around a quart in the torque converter than filled the transmission till it came out of the plug on the front of the transmission before starting it. I than started the car and topped it off again than drove it just down the street and back and topped it off again. After that I went for a 10 min drive and checked again and it was good.
Could it have just been the motor mounts?
No the transmission fluid was fried 🥵 burnt.
@@str8burbn Nice thanks for the info! take care
Make sure you have it secure pretty good as the motor will be held by one mount on the top passenger side only
@@str8burbn Thanks God I asked before removing the tranny mounts!!! I'm in your shoes right now... )))))
Oh damn lol good luck and it’s not that bad
Excellent bro good job.I also does like that
Thanks appreciate it
I'm about to change the transmission of my Hyundai Elantra but I have a doubt, several people have told me that after installing the transmission I would have to reprogram it or something like that, I didn't see you do it in your video, do you think it's necessary or would it just be to remove the old one and install the new transmission? Thank you, I hope you can answer
If the car was towed on all 4 wheels rolling with engine blown will damage the transmission
The pump won’t be running to lube the transmission so a long tow isn’t good but a short tow shouldn’t damage it .
hey man were did you end up getting the transmission. i have looked everywhere i have a 2016 hyundai elantra SE and im needing a new transmission. im having such a hard time any help or just a point into the right direction would be fantastic. thanks in advance.
Thanks for the video. One question, is the 2013 Hyundai Elantra the same? And where did you find a transmission for $200.00?
It should be if not close you might have to drop sub frame but not to difficult just support the motor really good 👍🏻. I found mine off KSL classifieds and got lucky
Can I replace my Hyundai Elantra 2015 transmission gear box with Hyundai Elantra 2013 model transmission gear box and use?
I’d call Hyundai and ask them before I’d buy
@@str8burbn okay thank you will be waiting on your reply thank you
Entonces una transmision automatica 2014 le queda a un modelo 2015?
Are you saying that 13 to 17 has the same automatic trans because I have a new trans that's on a 2016? I wanna put it on my 2013. But ebay listing shows 15 to 17 on transmission but 12 to 17 on motor. Can someone confirm these 6 speed auto trans are the same, just like the motor. It should be m6cf1 auto trans. Just wanna confirm I can relearn if need be because I'm a locksmith with lots of experience. If someone can confirm, I'll buy lunch.
hello how many miles did i have? you didn't reset the module? it is only to remove and to put !! true
I forgot the miles but I didnt have to reset anything on mine
But please any time I accelerate my elantra 2015 model and it reaches RPM of 2000 the vehicle always jerks what might be the cause of it
I currently have a 2016 Hyundai Elantra and my car is having transmission issues.
Or should I get the 2014 ? Year . Just want to make sure I don’t buy it for nothing I appreciate your video 💯
Which shop did you get the transmission from? I live in Salt lake...
Where did you pick that transmission up with 3,000 Mi on it for $200 or did I misunderstand that
Didn’t have to put oil in the converter ?
Curious, how did you handle lifting that transmission? Did you lift it by yourself or a must 2 person? Didn't show in the video you unloading the new one or when you put it on top of the jack. I plan on making an attempt on changing my transmission (I got a Sentra like yours), looking to see how hard it will be lugging it around and throwing it on top of a jack.
I had my boy help me out most definitely have 2 people to help. I also had my wife working the jack as the trans was pretty heavy and awkward.
Do u needreset the computer after change it the transmission?
I didn’t have to on mine
