- My Mum had this old table that badly needed re finishing. So I tried to new things. First using a cabinet scraper and then some shellac finish.

I love working with shellac, I've refinished an Edwardian dressing table with it and it was beautiful.
It is very satisfying to use
Man, the things you do just for a batch of mom’s homemade cookies. 😊
Looks great!
Thank you
That young dog wants to learn all the new tricks! 😊
She definitely does
Nicely done, always been on the fence wither the rider tools, but you seemed to get on with it well.
I always use standard of the shelf Meths for mixing shellac, the cheap stuff with the added bitters and purple colour aren’t to stop the winos quaffing it down the bus station, even on a lemon or blonde shellac the the colour doesn’t bleed through, and once you hit the button or garnet end there’s no need to worry. Interested as to why you went straight in with the rubber though, using a large size mop for the first dozen coats will give a better base, and waste much less than a rubber.
Always de-dib between coats though, 400 grit abrasives or 0000 wire wool, and tac-cloth between coats, that way by the time you get the rubber out, there’s a good base, and you’re only laying on the tiniest amounts to get the smooth shine you want. Then it can be waxed. ;-)
I will give all that a go next time
They both look really good products. Well done Matt. 👍
Great job Matt, love your helper he is an upcoming star.
Thank you
Woodworking, cooking and now doggy daycare. This man is amazing!!!
Haha thank you
The best way to finish the shellac is to apply soft wax polish with 0000 wire wool then polish with a soft cloth
Great vid - always nice to learn new skills. Super outcome.
Thank you
Hi Matt, a lovely finish with the shellac, your Mum "the Boss" will be very happy with the finish on that table top, being honest it looks amazing you dome a great job. As always a great video take care
Thank you very much
That really brought the grain out Matt, nice work 👍
Thank you
The Isoprop alcohol is great for cleaning anything you want to remove debris without leaving a residue 👍🏻
Same as you, had a container full of it for ages and been wanting an excuse to use some of it as the old masters obviously liked it for a reason. Turned out lovely Matt.
Thank you. It’s satisfying to apply
Really beautiful work, Matt! 😃
Next time you finish something with shellac, try to apply some paste wax over it with a scotch brite (I don't know exactly how to write it). It gets even more beautiful!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you
Did you see Paul Sellers’ blog post about this scraper? He didn’t like it. I don’t know, seems to work okay for removing finish on flat surfaces. I’ve got the Bahco scraper/s, the black/orange ones that everybody seems to love: I can confirm, they’re excellent.
I did not see that. Worked well for me
The bahco one is brilliant, it was sharp as a tac right out of the box as well
@@Badgerworkshop Paul's complaint was that the default blade was far too thick, meaning you couldn't properly control the blade curve with the setting screw. If it works for you, all well and good. If it doesn't, the veritas replacement blade for their cabinet scraper fits the axminster one perfectly (costs about 18 quid, though) -- which is what I've done and can thoroughly recommend it.
That finish is brilliant
Thank you
Hi Matt, the table looks absolutely fantastic, I am certzin 'the boss' aka mum, will be vety hsppy with the result, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia, Les
Thank you
👍👍👍.Thanks Matt
Thank you
Cracking job Matt, but the real star of the show is your amazing Doggo 💚🐶, I did mention before about making a house for them, but really, you’ve got to do something special for the killer hund 🤣🤣💚🐶
Thank you. She would like a new bed
I expect the boss was very pleased Matt, that was a professional job. I'm a sucker for any video with dogs. 😍
I do need more dogs in my videos
So you can pronounce it, I so pro pol nal . You can also refinish shellac without scrapping old off because each coat "melts" into coat below. Great stuff and great video though not sure your co host didn't steal the show.
Yes, but you would have to be sure that the old finish was also shellac.
@@mm9773 Which is stated in my comment.
Technically the last bit is ‘ol’ not nal as prop is 5 carbon atoms and ol makes it alcohol. But great way to read the name for sure
needs a bunch of coasters or a glass top
Hello Matt, im just curious, is there a need to add any other type of protective top coat such as a water-based poly to prevent "liquid rings", as I'd imagine someone would be placing a cup of tea or similar on top?
I'm curious to know for future reference as I'd like to try making my own shellac as well. TIA for any info & tips!
Great channel with great content, info, tips, & tricks that deserve many more views, subs &/or exposure, IMHP!

They will use coasters to protect the top
Is he a patterdale?
I've been meaning to get into mixing my own shellac. The big question is, when will matt get a dog of his own?
Maybe one day
If you are watching, Don't worry Mrs Badger! It looks drastic at the beginning but turns out pukka
What about the legs ?
2:55 the dog is not so much help with the camerawork if he gets distracted by a squirrel...
