Thanks for the video!! Super useful and easy to follow. Will use this shorcut, even recording with no looping, just take the last take and delete the others is great.
Thank you so much for this. I was looking for something to help me with creating simple loops with midi and found a whole new way to write and record compositions with midi + guitar + drums. Reaper really does have some hidden gems and this video explains them in the best way possible. Thanks again so much!
Thanks Kenny- Great tutorials-! Just a tip on a preference setting-- I found that the Looper custom action did not work at first (it would not crop to previous take), the fix was a default setting under Preferences > Loop Recording > "When recording and looped, add recorded media to project". Make sure this is set to "On Stop (Default, recommended"). If it is set to "At each loop" , the cropping to previous take action does not appear to work.
@@REAPERMania as good as the looper plug in is it confuses the crap out of me and just looks so messy...this metthod looks so logical and you can see whats what at a glance..
Thanks Kenny! I haven't tried it (yet), but after watching this I'm guessing REAPER can be used for a live looping performance. Am still newish to REAPER, but I'd think you could set up markers on the fly, then switch between sections using those, mute tracks on the fly, etc. Maybe a subject for a future tutorial?
Hey anonagain, I also have been trying to get Reaper to act as a live looper and have figured out some tricks. Drop me a line and let's chat - email me at holykashit@yahoo.com, or send me a message in the Reaper forums - user name Dave 2099. Cheers!
amazing resource! still valid now too! Although, I get an issue with my tracks at the end of the loop and not sure if there is a default setting that is on that I'm not aware of. Anyone else get a tail end of silence for a few milliseconds at the end of each loop? It causes a blip/clip sound when I glue them, or loop them
How can I eventually record a melody line that is longer that its current range without the need to copy and paste all the previous stuff to make longer tracks? I really want to record only 4 bars of backing track and then continue with soloing 32 bars or more without interruption. I could simply not record my solo part, but then it would be lost. I would be very happy to get a response from you, thank you.
A small question, can I mute one of the tracks with a keyboard shortcut? and put the track on again with a keyboard shortcut? How do I do that? Do I need the looper to be active and recording my voice on another track in real time is possible? I want to do the looper and record the voice of a song in real timeThank you!
Man I just found out there is "monitor track media when recording" instead of just looking it up I've done it with workarounds this whole time (12+ years)
what if I want to record a solo over a chord progression? And i want to keep the entire solo, even if it's like over two instances of the chord progression?
Hi, I have 2 questions I know reaper can be used for live playback but can I layer sounds like a vst host? Also can I use multiple midi controllers? Thx
very good questions, I have no guitar but hardware and software synths and stuff and I can't get my head around how to use more than one instrument in this way - only setting up more loops like this and changing manually, rather unnerving without foot switch xD
You can use as many MIDI controllers as you want/have. And if I'm understanding your first question correctly, then yes you can easily have multiple VST effects and/or instruments on a single track, or across multiple tracks, and have them respond to specific MIDI controllers, or only to certain controllers. So you can press one key on your MIDI keyboard and have it play multiple instruments at once, if you want. Or have one MIDI keyboard that controls instrument #1 (+ more), and a second that controls instrument #2 (+ more).
As a novice I find that this doesn't work for me at all. When setting up the action Kenny uses CTRL+R as a keyboard shortcut but CTRL+R is already assigned to 'Record'! Also he ends up with several tracks. This doesn't happen following the instructions - I end up with just one track of multiple takes. Most confusing for a beginner.
He's on macOS, where Control-R is unbound by default, because Cmd-R is Record. On Windows, Control-R is Record, so on Windows you'd choose a different keyboard shortcut for the custom action. Remember you can choose any keyboard shortcut you want, you don't have to use the ones that Kenny uses; and if you're on Windows not macOS, you may well have to choose a different shortcut in some cases. Secondly: he doesn't end up with multiple tracks, he has one track with multiple lanes/layers. I know you wrote this a year ago, but for anyone finding the comment now, just follow the tutorial again and be sure you do all the steps he does and it will work.

Great Explanation. Sort of reminds me of 'Guitar Riff' workflow. Is there some setting to enable to get these takes to explode?

Any advice greatly appreciated! When I hit record it doesn't loop on the same layer - it creates multiple layers
