Fly Trap Bait / FAILURE & Review

- Review of 3 different baits we setup for the fly traps to see which works best. The goal is to find a fly trap bait that works with no cost, (Free Bait). 2 out of 3 were big failures but one shows some success in catching black biting flies. I re-baited the fly traps and will check on them in one week to see how many flies it catches.

Good info! We have chickens, a pig and we run a part time taxidermy business so flys are always a problem for us!
Y’all living in the south and having animals have probably had the same issues as we do. I hope to figure this out with things from or place that’s natural. I really thought the horse and chicken manure was gonna be the key bait.
I have been using a little bit of cheap meat cat food in the dish, and put the rest in the fridge and replace after a few days. seems to work really good.
Awesome video buddy. I used your egg theory... added one egg, water and some left over fish blood meat. Success! I tested it without that blood meat and got some. But tripled my catch with the blood meat. Try by bringing your traps a little lower to the ground. Found it worked better. Wish I knew how to send a video your way. Aloha from Hawaii
That’s awesome. Every little thing helps. We are in winter right now, so no flies. But will definitely make adjustments to the height this spring and summer when they come back. Thanks for watching.
Flies always like stinky things ;). Great test and study in nature!
Great comparison, we use left over seafood and scraps. Shrimp shells, crawfish shells fish skins work really well but like you said stinky!!
gots to be stinky in order to attract them.
The horse manure has to be wet. I have horses , when the horse first drop the poop , the flies are on it. Once it dries not so much. Plus once you wet the poop(manure)the smell intensifies. Flies won’t lay their eggs on dry manure. The key is moisture. Which is why you had more flies on the egg and water mixture.
Good tip. We have tons of flies and I'm making traps with bottles but getting a good bait is the hard part. Milk left in the jugs seems to attract a lot of flies too.
I’ve seen a few videos of the bottle trap and may add it to our place. We have tried so many things in the past to help the animals. Just a waste of hard earn money so I’m wanting to figure out something that has minimal cost.
@@hollyridgehomestead try the bait called starbar quite effective
@@jimgregory9616 I will definitely look it up. Thanks
Great info!
Thanks buddy
My experience was anything with egg, kept wet and old is stinky and attracts the most flies, but being in direct sun is the main thing that seems to attract flies. My guess is if it's heated, it gets stinkier and more rotten.
You can see my results if you do a search on Stable Pest Control. I saw mine and that's how I found yours.
I saw that if the flies liken the traps lower. The flies naturally looks for food near the ground.
My results too.
Great video boss
Thank you for watching.
Mine works
Beer , yeast , and fruit and vegetables work best .
Need to put it lower to ground as well
Got to keep it wet . Stinking milk mixed in do good as well
Got to mix it
Will do
So... I have these for chickens. I only use fresh chicken poop + some water, making it more soupy/adding "flavour" to the evaporating vibes & I recharge it with a new soup every day ;) I hang this in the Sun & low to the ground (next to my chicken tractor). It's insanely good! Summer here, in AU & in 8 hrs, it's a quarter full in a day. I'm testing another one out in my deep litter the coop. Anyone reading this in that situ? I'd appreciate any tips ;) Thanks for the video! If you experiment & get this right? You're gold!
Thank you for the information! I am happy I don’t have to buy stink bait! I have plenty of eggs :) God Bless
You are so welcome!
I used a piece of chicken skin and the flies came in droves. It was better than the commercial bait also it doesn’t stink much.
Now I have done that before and will use it from time to time.
Don't have this type of trap. But once after eating corn on the cob, put the corn husks on a paper plate with a glue board (i.e. spider trap) and left in the sun. The glue board was completely filled with fly's in one afternoon.
That’s a good idea
Thanks
Try the little plastic thing that's in the bottom of a tray when you get ground turkey or ground meat it's got blood in it
Will do. Thanks
Chris, what do you do with the flies that are trapped? Do they die after being in there for so long?
I feed them to the chickens
How do you empty them? It's very slow and tedious to get them out. The funny thing is chickens only wanted the flies with some life and ignored the dead flies.
I have a three section coop and placed one of those fly traps in each section as there are lots of flies in the coop. Used sliced apple in the bait bowl and have NOT caught a single fly in the past four days....ugh!!!
egg and water I find works best for me.
Liver works great. Other rotting meat almost as good. Also bait must be kept damp. 'Stinks' is the magic word.
May have to try that at some point, but I’m doing this on the cheap
LOL
@@hollyridgehomestead Fat trimmings, any meat pieces that would be tossed go in my fly catchers.
Yes it needs to be lower and you need to use sugary stuff “you catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar !” Isn’t just a saying to be nice it came from somewhere because it works. Try using honey or soda. Smells better too.
Thank you for the info. I will try anything to help our animals.
I’ve been looking for info on this! Do you just open a soda bottle? Use half soda? I have some old sodas but don’t know the exact recipe, what do you recommend?
👍👍
Thanks blueheeler
How did the egg work out in the other 2 locations? I couldn't find the follow up vid.
With this type of fly trap, the egg mixed with water is the way to go.
did all three with egg do really well? and how long did they work
Egg with water seems to be the trick. You have to keep it checking on it when very hot, but effective.
My trap is in the sun, I've put a small dead fish in it , and also found a dead frog and put that in it ...trap has been there about 1 month and is about 1/4 full
My trap is about 6-7 feet off the ground hanging on a tree branch
They are worth the effort for sure.
I have a friend who does a cracked egg with manure mixed.
I might try that just to see how well it works. Egg and water has caught so many for us.
I use egg and water in my traps.
That is what we use also. Works really well!
Dead flys mixed with water works the best in my chicken coup
Good suggestion. Thanks
Would fish emulsion work?
I think it would. I didn’t have any to try at the time. When I discovered 1 egg and water works great , I stuck with it because I have chickens. Plenty of eggs for me.
Try the fish emulsion and let me know how it does please.
Where did you get the traps?
On the fly trap, You can order them on Amazon. Use key word "Fly Trap" to search.
Holly Ridge Homestead thanks... we have lots of flys around our rabbits and chickens
How do you empty the trap when it’s full inside?
Turn it upside down and they will come out the same hole. But it will hold a very large amount. To many to even count.
Upside down? Only one opening and it's on the bottom. The hole is so small that it plugs up right away and I have to sort of dig them out with a stick.
You have to think, why would a fly go to the effort of getting into the trap for horse manure when there's already an abundance they can just land on on the ground. You have to make it worth it. Get something real stinky in there. Rotten meat, eggs and blood mmmhhm
Agreed!!!
What about some fish Chris? Or some fish emulsion? I betcha that would get em.. Next time yall go fishin...just keep a couple...
That is something to try next time we have fish left over from cleaning.
Pick up some bait from Road kill.
My wife might not like me much after that
“Hey honey, can you get out and put the dead animal in the back of the truck please “
😂
i use an egg and meat blood or a piece of liver w water
I do use some stuff like that when I have it. Just was trying many different things that we use daily.
Thanks for the suggestions.
one viewer said try bananas
Not a bad idea
I was told they are to be placed in direct Sun🤷♀️
It would help to make them stinky, but also dry it out faster.
Put some sugar in the egg water too
I will have to try that. Make it sweet.
Someone told me molasses is an effective bait.
I May have to give that a try just to see.
Have fish for supper, then use scraps for bait.
Oh, I love fish. Now you making me hungry for a fish fry!
So far, all I've caught in mine is a butterfly, a lizard, and a wasp. No flies. Only things you can't get out once they're in.
Did you try 1 egg and water. It has to stay wet.
@@hollyridgehomestead No, my chickens aren't laying yet, so eggs are pretty expensive bait for me right now. I used a little wet dog food and sour mash.
@@Josef_R when you get a cracked egg or bad egg, use it. You will see a difference.
Have you tried horse hair, meat, or rotten veggies in the fly traps
Or maybe try urine
I've tried meat and veggies which works. Haven't tried horse hair or urine yet. Thanks for the suggestions and watching the videos!
Man, you guys have grand-daddy long legs there? we only have daddy long legs in Kansas.
FYI: I got great results with fermented rice. List make some rice, add a little water (after its cooked), and let it set for 3-4 days. Starts fermenting and stinking. Flies loved it.
I haven’t heard that one yet. May have to try it just because.
Thanks
What about honey? It’s sticky and doesn’t smell as bad as rotten egg?
Didn’t try that
Catch some shad, and put it in some Water
Banana????
That would bring them in.
I read that fish guts is good. Something stinky
Yep, needs to be stinky
It's not wet enough
you are right about that. The wetter the better. Summer dries them out so fast.
Try dog food mixed with an egg.
Will give that a try and see how well it does. Thanks for the hint.
Air doesnt cost money
In that kind of nature😂
The problem with your is the bait you are using. Mine got loaded with flys from shrimp shells, clam shells, try raw meats and keep it hydrated. Use bait that really stinks.
Thank you.
