That’s so awesome, what an exciting time 😁! Thank you so much for the support 🙏🏻 hmu anytime about anything, I know the first few students can be a whirlwind 🤩
Started driving, didn't have a good trainer week, wasn't taught much. He said for the engine brakes to just set your cruise to 5mph below your wanted speed and then anytime you start to increase past that 5mph to throw on the jakes to the highest level (All the way down) and once you slow down to about 5mph under the cruise to throw off the jakes. (from 65 to 60, jake to 55 and then release, even around downhill curves) It didn't feel right and i felt like i was often at the mercy of the hill, is that a normal way to descend or take sharp turns? Is slowing down so frowned upon if i feel unsafe going that speed? It was Cabbage hill/cabbage patch that we descended, total weight was ~65,000lbs. was told to initially keep it at 65mph and only throw on the engine brakes if we get to 69. braking only to help the jakes if it doesn't slow down. I decided to reduce the speed to be more comfortable and drew some ire from my "trainer" for it.
I certainly understand you feeling that the instructions you were given for descent control were insufficient. I’m sorry you’re having a negative experience with your trainer. If you feel it is unsafe reach out to your dispatcher to relay your concerns, safety is always number one. In response to your breakdown: different descents require different approaches, there is no one size fits all. Having a target window is good as you can see from my coaching, but downhill curves require extra attention as these lateral movements with speed can cause rollovers. My advice to you would be to use your 4 way flashers and descend at a speed that feels comfortable and safe to you. But also keep in mind, going unnecessarily slow can be unsafe if other drivers are present and going much faster. Keep us posted. 🙋🏻♂️ Drive safe 🙌🏼😁
I leave mine on all of time saves the rest of the brakes also remember how heavy and how long the hill is and just because you can go faster doesn't mean it's safe because let's face it there's plenty of traffic around most of the time
Great feedback James, absolutely when we are in winding hills with quick descents and climbs it is often good to leave the jakes in the second position and simply accelerate to override them as you make those ups and downs, really solid insights. I have found that in those longer more predictable hills, adding the cruise helps drive endurance and creates better efficiency and efficiency is our second priority 😎🙏🏻 Thanks for reaching out !
Great question! 🙌🏼🤓 wet weather doesn’t affect the jakes function but using it in slick conditions DOES CAUSE PROBLEMS. This is because when you use the jakes you’re slowing the truck but not the trailer directly and the trailer could slide or worst case jackknife as a result. Make sure to use the service brake with the jakes if there is an issue with traction. And still be very cautious. Great question!

Does wet weather effect the Jake break?
