  • I uploaded this for a psychology class presentation; 3 years later, I thought I might as well make it public instead of unlisted. Cheers!

enlighten me, wtf is gestalt psychosis?

I put this up on UA-cam for a class, so I'll try my best to explain:
Gestalt in psychology basically just means that people tend to perceive phenomena around them holistically/as a whole, rather than just noticing tons of specific things about it; I believe then that gestalt psychosis would be losing touch with what's real about the whole picture. So Miyako has looked at the specific details of her face in the mirror for so long that she's lost the plot on what her whole face is irl.
TLDR She's looked at the details of her face so much that she lost sight of the whole thing.
Keep in mind that I'm only going by the subtitles here since I don't know Japanese and it's possible my explanation doesn't make as much sense with what they're actually saying. I gave my Blu-ray of this season a spin to check what the subtitles were there, and they're sorta totally different.

@@kharacter the phenomenon here is gestaltzerfall which is a problem not usually seen outside of china and japan, where when reading a kanji the reader separates it into it's component radicals and can't see the whole kanji any more, blocking them from reading it.
it's similar, but not the same as when you repeat a word verbally over and over again until the word stops meaning anything and starts sounding like gibberish.
basically your explanation is correct but the specific psychological phenomenon is more known in japanese culture than english speaking culture, due to the aforementioned kanji thing

That's super interesting! I was not aware of this phenomenon prior to reading your comment - I am happy to now be better informed. Thank you very much for sharing this info!
