I am aware from all the comments that this video was a bit shaky. Its quite an old video on my channel (filmed in 2016) and I didn't take much consideration into how stable the filming was. My more recent videos (from 2018) are better quality and more stabilised. Thanks for your understanding 😎
The mad thing is i have lived in Preston all my life and only seen this change about 10 times with the train in 37 years i have seen the bridge open a lot nice catch mate
This is the most unusual level crossing I have ever seen and I haven't even been on the Ribble Steam Railway so it is making me think about having a ride and seeing for myself. Well Done You for finding this.👍👍👍
Thanks! 😁 I don't think there's anything else like this in the UK. The swing bridge also operates occasionally but I'm not sure how often (obviously not when a trains due).
Great video of this unusual crossing. The sound the rather old barriers make remind me of the barriers which used to feature at many a multi-storey car park.
Thanks. The barriers here make reasonably loud motor noises when they lower and raise. There's lots of carparks which probably have old and noisy barriers like these. Maybe not as slow.
Oh yeah. I think they do these wigwags with LED Optic Designs. There's some at bascule bridges and fire stations but not many at level crossings as far as I'm aware: www.siemens.co.uk/traffic/pool/images/product_page_images/wig_wag_durham.jpg
Very cool interchange of traffic. The only thing that would ring my bell any louder is if it was also a drawbridge. And the Thomas face was a delight! 👍
It's a similar arrangement to Britannia bridge in Porthmadog, except that isn't a swing bridge. Many dock lines in places like Birkenhead had bridges that were shared by trains and road vehicles.
freebrickproductions Thanks. Yes, this is one weird and long crossing with some old barriers and wigwags. Some crossings in your country might even be longer with the tracks which cross over a junction or a highway / boulevard crossing.
Lol. A 6 track crossing here is the longest. And I like to think that this location is quite rare. You clearly have some more weird and wonderful railroad crossings =)
I was rewatching this video when I noticed something. The gate lights on the crossing at 0:25 appear to be American Lantern-style gate lights made by WRRS (or Western Cullen Hayes, depending on when they were installed, but WCH has never bothered to change the molds on the bases so they all say "WRRS" on them), which is rather odd, especially since Lantern gate lights here in the US tend to be rather rare!
Could have been a nice video but next time please find A good spot and stay put. The constant movement is sickening and annoying. We aren't interested in a close up of the signals and gates beyond a plain zoom in. That would have been a great catch otherwise.
Thanks for the comment. I did realise I should have stayed where I was after filming the video. I've learnt from this though and some more recent videos are better.
0:00 Intro 0:13 Another Level Crossing Lights Starts To Flash (No Alarm) 0:20 Barriers Start to Lower and make sound effects 0:26 A Boy Runs To The Level crossing into the tracks
It's weird indeed. It seems that a lot of these particular wigwags (Forest City Halogens) seem to have different flash phases. These wigwags are very old and probably date back at least 30 years or so. The old equipment on heritage railway crossings rarely gets touched. Looks cool though and I see what you mean by being 'messed up'. Certainly looks a bit.
There are alarms for the swing bridge but they are only used if the swing bridge is in operation. This is because there isn't actually any point where pedestrians can cross the railway line on the bridge, and since the barriers are only blocking the road here, no alarms are needed. There are alarms at the other crossing with warning lights and the footpath crossing at the other end of the bridge (shown in the middle of the video).
I still wonder why there are siemens optic signals on those forest city backgrounds... IMO importing some econolite groovebacks wouldve been a better fit
I have a question. If there was a train and a boat at the same time, would the train have to wait for the boat to pass or would the boat have to wait for the train to pass?
NathTrains Yes. They are half wigwag half traffic light. Some optic design traffic lights have just been stuck onto this Forest City board. And Thanks =)
Indeed. By the amount of dirt, rust, noise and the fact these don't have any skirts gives quite a clear impression these things are old and need replacing. The railway probably doesn't want to pay to install new ones. They still work fine to be honest.
Nice video of a Class 14 'teddy bear' and a Bagnall (I think) 0-6-0ST. seen one like it in real life (Ruswarp near Whitby) but it wasn't as strange as this one.

Thanks 😎 It was one of my older videos - and it's a shame it didn't stabilise as best I wanted as I've received a lot of criticism for the shakiness. A lot of my more recent videos are much better though
It's interesting that the lights at the start aren't in sync. The right one showed red whilst the left one still showed amber. Also, what's the warning triangle painted on the road by the first set of lights say? Something about tracks?
The lights have individual flashing relays by the looks of it. I didn't notice that triangle actually and am not too sure. I will have a closer look and let you know soon.
That is one of the coolest crossings I have ever seen!!
Yeah I know. It's quite cool seeing the railway running over a swing bridge.
Great crossing God bless you
Wow! That is a pretty unique crossing. I am sure a lot of the motorists are not too fussed on it lol.
Yeah, it sure is. The lights and barriers control traffic for both the swing bridge and level crossing :)

I never see Siemens [a traffic light company] make wig-wags. great catch.
Yeah. These wigwags are one of a kind. They are no-where else in the UK which is quite amazing.
Siemens do manufacture wig-wags, though it is simply Helios modules on a backing board.

Intriguing how the alarms do not blare on the swing bridge crossing but they do blare on the rail crossing.
There are alarms for the swing bridge but they are only used if the swing bridge is in operation. I have a question. If there was a train and a boat at the same time, would the train have to wait for the boat to pass or would the boat have to wait for the train to pass?
The first one I know of cause I live in Preston I've actually been on a train that goes over it also imagine if a train and boat came at the same time
That would be a bit of a sticky situation :) - The bridge probably only swings open when no trains are due.
The boat would have to wait.

the barriers on the small railway crossing are in the process of being replaced by BR standard barriers
