man i love the knife. i have a farm use it every day, never fails, just one awesome knife for the price. i just dump it in my pocket do not use the belt case. great vid thanks for sharing.
I own 2 of these. I have a thumb stud on the one I carry. It can be opened and closed one handed, but it takes some practice. Taking it apart and polishing the washers with a high grit sandpaper helps make it easier etc.
Just bought one. I Do-Not like studs. They are always in the way when cutting/slicing. This is a great find for me. Since it is larger, it's perfect for my big hands. With smaller pocket knives I can not get a good hold on them... I have no need to snap open a blade plus its rude and threatening to do so in front of others, 'especially" friends and family.
Really informative video. Had my Ranch Boss 6 mths now and loving everything about it. 2 handed opening no issue for me but in an emergency I can open one handed by semi opening with 2 fingers of right hand and using the tip jabbed into something to open all the way. So in an emergency it can be deployed one handed. Fit n finish on mine was VG with excellent blade centering. I have reprofiled the secondary bevel so that it now cuts even better. Liner lock makes this knife feel very safe and has solid action as it engages. If U love traditional knives I recommend this one. Had a bad exp with Buck 110. Lots of blade play. Blade out of true. Blade back stop badly ground. Very off centre - and the knife was well over double the RB II. I was so disappointed. However this CS knife has given nothing but pleasure and reliability.
At the current point a lot of us can agree it is that nostalgic, grandpa's knife. If you think about it, sometime in the future when we're old men, my grandkids vision of "grandpa's knife" will be a benchmade bugout or an extra large voyager/espada lol.
Had to buy because of all The negative reviews I Usually prefer usa made Knives, but this is an all Around perfect knife .l am Usually finding faualt in all Knives. But I got to admit This knife is 99.9 % perfect. May not ever carry it but I Like admiring it. U.S.A.
If you don't like the steel SRK5, liner lock, and no studs? Buy thd Range Boss II with german 4016 Steel, triad lock and thumb studs. No sheath, but you can buy them for the price difference of a Buck 110. Sadly, the triad version it hasn't the look of Buck 110. I bought a clone/Buck made Hunter style in 1980 at K-Mart. I am sure it was a Buck. But much larger. Its spring was horrible, and I never used it. These two knives are possibly two I might buy.
Like the one guy said, it’s big brother is the broken skull! I wish they’d bring the broken skull back. I would buy five of them they’re awesome and it wouldn’t be a bad idea for them to make the ranch boss without the detent. Make it a little bit. Easier to open and steady using SK5 use Aus10a
Excellent review! I have had my Ranch Boss II for about a year now and really like it. I usually use it for working on larger tasks so I don’t mind the two-handed opening. I also think of it as being double safe because you get a full strength slip joint back spring with the added safety of a liner lock. The sheath is also the best! For quick one-handed opening on smaller tasks like rope and boxes I also carry a smaller knife in my pocket like a Spyderco Delica 4. I keep my Ranch Boss II handy on my belt for larger cutting tasks. Thanks for the review!👍
That's a great system right there. I appreciate the watch! I thought I would give this blade away, but something has made me hang on to it. Just can't seem to give it up!
SK5 is 0.8 to 0.9 percent carbon. It's really easy to sharpen and sharpens super sharp. It's great steel for a ranch or wilderness folder. If you were in the woods for an extended period of time you could sharpen it on a smooth stone if you had to.
Thanks for another great review Matt. This one has been on my radar for quite a while. In browsing Amazon for Black Friday deals today, I noticed it was on sale for 29 bucks! I don't think I can pass that up, especially since I don't mind old school two handed opening and closing knives.
I collect knives and just got this one, its brother the broken skull are the same style! I love the broken skull and edc it a lot. I love the fact they tried the old school way so points for that Cold Steel! Its a wonderful part of my collection! Nice review! My favorite blades are TOPS I have just got the Smoke Jumper and could you review it? cheers..
Thanks for the review! I knew I had seen a similar blade shape before, and finally recalled it: starting 25 or so years ago Cold Steel made a series of three large and three small “Twistmasters” which were larger / beefier CS interpretations of Opinel knives, with three different blade shapes. The FFG clip point blade on this is a close match to that on the matching Twistmaster model. Great cutter. They also made a large leaf-shaped drop point and a black-coated tanto, but this clip point was the most useful. One suggestion for future videos, please mention the lock type up front if you would. I thought this was a slip joint until you mentioned liner lock 8 minutes in. In researching, it also seems like it’s a non-traditional liner lock, not a Walker type, that’s stronger somehow? I’d also be interested if you encountered any blade play side to side or up/down compared to the stronger back lock 110? Being a Cold Steel I doubt it, but if you’re comparing…. Thanks again!
This knife is like the shrade. The knife is made for hard work. Alot cheaper then a old shrade. The old shrades had a issue with the tips braking alot. You may notice 2nd hand knifes in shrade missing there tips on the blade. So as steel will go time will only tell. I have just brought a cold steel. Should sharpen well. I'm older hunter and collector. Cold steel has always had a good reputation. I have small flippers.so this knife is built well. As for holders of pocket knifes you must remember it is to be on your person first.. Yes it will be loose if the knife and holster is not fitted on you. It's designed to be on your hip..person..young people make me laugh. So it's a great knife I think for a bad time.and hi cost..in the world..think it will turn out a collector's peace as well
Cold Steel must have released this knife with the German crowd in mind. The strong detent and not being able to open it with one hand makes the Ranch Boss 2 street legal here in Germany. Don't get me started on the weird knife laws down here.
Yes, and yes. But a flat grind can never compete with a hollow ground edge. They are supremely thin behind the edge, and they cut very well, which is after all the purpose of a knife.
@@MattRoseKnives Hey Matt - is it possible to use the thumb stud with this Cold Steel Ranch Boss 2? I have my Buck 112 and i want to buy the thumb stud to open one handed. I also want to buy Cold Steel Ranch Boss 2 but i need to know that will be working fine with thumb stud on the blade to one handed opening? BTW nice video bro :)
Only very small knives should have a liner lock ! Weak Liner lock , They hold long enough for you to put a lot of pressure on then fail and cut you bad like a dull knife ! The bump in the handle is to far towards the but of the handle and the but of the handle is to large , heavy for no reason !

You and I both, my friend :)
It has a very stiff spring. You can dremel in a 90 degree stop easily, if you want to.
My ranch boss 2 didn't come with a sheath. It was $35.00 before tax.
Dang!
They put the damn belt loop to low on sheaths these days as they don't ever use them !
Agreed
Shocked when you told me the price. A lot of knife for the $.
You could sand some of the back spring to lighten it
Fair fair

@@jaja-nw2ft it can be done, but it's not the smoothest deployment and it has to be mounted relatively high in the blade

Can't find any comparison videos between the ranch boss. Is this one larger or smaller?
Haven’t handled the smaller one, but I assume it’s mostly similar with just shrunken ergos
Super steels are so pretentious
I too like acting like a contrarian asshole and using words like "pretentious" to make an imaginary argument!
SK5 isn't really considered a "super steel". It's been around forever.
@@loucyphre376 I don't think he meant SK5, but rather that he prefers steels like SK5.
