Russell Allen is one of my favourite vocalists but Rod Tyler has a good potential, a cleaner voice and much less violent so he is better in my opinion in songs like this, more melodic. I would like to listen more of his material, his way of singing makes me feel... nostalgic in some way, I don't know why, is like he sings from a distant and forgotten world
This demo proves what I've been thinking all along about the damnation game being a direct sequel to symphony x. All of the songs on damnation game were essentially written and done for Rod Tyler to be on vocals. They were literally in the process of recording Damnation Game and I'm sure they probably started with this song and that's when Rod left and introduced Allen for the band. I still hold onto the fact that Rod Tyler would've done a better job than Allen on songs like Damnation Game, Dressed to Kill, Savage Curtain, The Haunting, Secrets. Those songs were literally made in mind with Tyler on vocals as they sound instrumentally similar to songs on the debut album. I don't think Allen had any influence in the band until Divine Wings where you can tell they went for a more power metal approach that would fit in with Allen's vocals. Had Rod stayed, I think Divine Wings wouldn't been a completely different sound. It's interesting to think about.
I agree with you. I always thought that Damnation Game was meant to continue that "mystical" sound and atmosphere of their first album, and the musical style and structure of the songs you mentioned prove this theory. To me, the first album is a masterpiece, an underrated gem. It's a shame that they went downward so fast after this.
Rorke47 couldn't agree more with you guys. First album is a masterpiece! If not the best SX album in my opinion. What an interesting point of view about the conection between this album and the first one. Cheers!
Rod Tyler isn't bad at all. I mean he lacks grit, unlike Russell who has that raspiness, power and range. But other than that, his voice really does match well with early Symphony X quite well in fact, even if most fans do overlook the first album. I still think it contains some great stuff.
Even with Rod Tyler on vocals, I consider an excellent Symphony X album. There are melodies and lyrics in there that should not be ignored because of his voice.
I just like the songs that no body cares or wants to talk about. Still to this day I consider Premonition one of my top 5 favorite Symphony X of all time. Just the atmosphere and the melodies are pleasing to the ear (my ear)
I agree! Shoot, the whole album is beautiful lol. It saddens me that hardly any of the songs get played live. I would kill to see A lesson Before Dying live.
Kinda the same thing that happened to Andromeda where their first singer left and actually re-recorded over his vocals with the new singer. Rod Tyler's style fits with the first album but overall is a little weak. He has a definite style but at times it comes off as whiny and airy. It's as if he's not getting full breath and singing from his lungs. With that being said, A Lesson Before Dying is a perfect example of how his vocals fit their early style and though I do prefer the album version of Winter's Dream over this, it's still a good listen.
Can someone tell me how they've found this demo, or if there's more musics like this one in the voice of Rod Tyler? I can't stop hearing since I found it! I like his voice very much. :) Too bad he, based on what I found, couldn't sing anymore. I wish I could ask the band about him.
Maximiliano Albino de Melo Hello, unfortunately there is not. What we have are the Symphony X - 1994 and Rarities and Demos, which was released in 2005.
Rod tyler is a great singer. Indeed, The Damnation Game album was meant for Rod Tyler on vocals. He left in the middle of the recordings, suddenly. Weird. Wonder where he is now? Probably dead, seeing as no information on what band he joined next or something. I heard he died of cancer a year or two after he left Sym X, but who knows.
Ademas de asemejarse a Mike vescera...se notaba mas un aire al viejo QUEEN epico por los coros..es una verdadera perla el primer album de Symphony..amo escuchar todos sus albunes..son obras maestras..
I just bought a copy of the original album and I was stunned; I forgot how good it was. Yeah, Rod Tyler is no Russel but his voice doesn't bug me at all and I think it works for the album. Still, yeah, I think so many people overlook the first album, even the band it seems.
Rod Tyler and Russell Allen are like One Punch Man: the first one is raw, yet darker; the other is way more polished and powerful. I cannot say who I prefer in this song
Nice upload Demetrius! By the way, do you know something about Rod Tyler more than someone actually knows? If he's alive or anything? It's frustrating for me the fact of this guy record one disc and simply vanish of the earth...
I do not know if he is alive. He went to Overlorde in 1998 (was doing a test and was not in the band). Never heard of him, I'll ask then to Thomas Miller, he must know something.
RaulCabralCEU in 1988, Rod Tyler Loiza integrated OVERLORDE before being invited to enter the Symphony X, years later. Rod had a reason to look for a new band, internal problems in Overlorde. Rod left unfinished work in his former band, before joining his new band. One of the reasons for his departure in Overlorde was a delay in a show, the band played the entire show without him. After that, the singer joined the Symphony X in 1994 for the recording of the eponymous album, and the first of his career. Unfortunately these days do not have any news on the whereabouts of Rod Tyler. But according to the leader and guitarist Overlorde, Mark Edwards, after the break the band took a Tyler faced health problems over the years 90, probably during or after the recordings with the Symphony X. The singer contracted a lump in the throat affecting his vocal chords. Hardly Rod followed singing, because is not any record on subsequent artwork vocalist. As crazy and unbelievable as it sounds, the reason I found this video is because I met him today and had to look him up after he casually mentioned being in a metal band in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I thought,” Ok I’m sure it’s a garage band or something,” Apparently not. If I had heard of him or the band before I would have got a picture. Looking at the comments, he’s done a good job keeping a low profile so I won’t ruin it for him, but know that he is alive.
There's not doubt, but this version is better than on the damnation album. Of course metalheads always sucks, when they re-do some songs again on some new album from their demos....
I actually thinks that Rod Tyler is better than Russell (I don't like his mechanicanized and forced raspy voice and I see him one of the most overrated singers in metal scene today). Tyler's voice reminds me of Mike Vescera and fits very well the sound of the band. Symphony X first album is very unique, mystic, has some imersive atmosphere. The others are just downgrade.

I personally think Damnation Game was their finest work with their unique dark, mystic, enigmatic atmosphere presented at its purest.

No tenía idea que Simphony x antes tenía otro cantante y que voz más brutal, pedazo de voz!!!!
además es una voz exesivamente peculiar, le da un tono melancólico y culto al primer album.

wonder why they edited out the ending in the album version

Demetrius Ricon you asked for Thomas Miller on Rod Tyler?
what happened with Rod Tyler? since he left the band, I never heard anything from him again.
He stopped singing. At the end of '98, after leaving the Overlord, he contracted a nodule in his throat.
