As a lifelong Symphony X fan and trained classical musician, opera singer and music history teacher, this is pretty much the ultimate UA-cam video.
symphony x merged classical music with metal in the best possible way
Due my classical education, neoclassical Metal is one of my fave styles actually from long time ago, bands who performed with Ritchie Blackmore, Uli Jon Roth, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stratovarius, Kenziner, Rhapsody, among too many others, and Symphony X, are pretty special, I love specially Bach, Mozart and Beethoven influence
dont forget Akumajou Dracula / Castlevania music :D
from neoclassical i think the symphony x is the best or one of the bests
Kenziner!!!
SX being at the top list, I also like Majestic, Adagio, Requiem, Holy Knights, Highlord, SkyLark, and dozens of underrated but so talented bands bringing this same classical, virtuose, and grandiose vibe.
outstanding work Marc. Thanks for taking the time to reassemble these fabulous art works. If nothing it reflects Symphony x mastery of melody and adaptation of legendary classic music into an impressive progressive metal pattern.
GREAT JOB MAN
Gran aporte amigo, completamente infravalorado. Justo estaba buscando un video así
Amazing!
very well done! I wondered where they got some of their music
They need to go back to their roots. The recent albums are nice. But they lack the punch of symphonic masterpieces of the past.
Michael Romeo is the John Williams of Progressive Metal.
"V" is to me their peak, that is a really true piece of art
hmmm.... not sure about being their peak. Totally agreed on V being a masterpiece.
@@j4ur14 DWoT, Twilight in Olympus, V and Odyssey are all masterpieces in my book and I can't pick the best out of them.
I'm with you 100%. V is my favorite hands down.
Yes, It is. Nothing as good as 'V' since then.
V is a true masterpiece and definitely my fave, but Paradise Lost is a powerful album and certainly not a down-slope by any stretch.
Playing those parts on guitar is really difficult. Michael Romeo is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Top 5 for sure.
Of course music is not a competition, noneless Michael Romeo is clearly a top electric player ! His skills in composition and arrangement is really great too.
A look inside the mind of Michael Romeo.
Michael Quigley and Michael Pinnella of course
@@AdiMercury Yes, Michael Pinnella too. He is great.
Very unfortunate guy with less light !
Actually GEM is not available everywhere !
awesome
I won't spend my time replying some commentaries that compares this great use of extraordinary music with stealing. I'm just sad when I see so poor understanding. One more time, Symphony X deserves congratulations. Thank you for the amazing video
Well said ! I certainly didn't make this video to accuse SX of stealing anything, especially when they made such a great use of this amazing music...
Anyway, thanks man ! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Personally I'd like them to mix both styles so that everyone can get what they want.
Stealing? Of course not, this is more like a tribute to these amazing artists of the past. Personally I'm an immense Bach lover. If I had to pick one artist to listen to for the rest of my life it would be him. And this is part of the reason why I love Symphony X so freaking much.
I totally agree and I'll surely spend my time replaying this video once more lol
This video made me feel so proud and fortunate of my musical taste.

lol it's not "BMW" it's "BWV"... Bach Werke Verzeichnis.
It is a pity that symphony-x has not been as symphonic lately ...
Not really, as an old SX fan I still like their newer stuff.
I enjoy their new stuff, as it's very heavy and still progressive, and I do appreciate the fact they have no problem fulling off their old stuff live, but I wish they'd release another album with both that heavy grit and the symphonic element that made them so unique in the first place.
The iconoclast album is not so symphonic but é very original songs, I love it. The underworld album have very llittle symphonic and prog elemnts... i don't liked this...
Nor progressive. Since paradise lost (not to say from the odyssey because i know i might hurt some feelings), they're sadly just a good metal band, not the musically rich band from before the odyssey..
@@sepita10 I feel like after V they lost their Symphony. They're simply X; a great metal band. And I believe they did this to "change with the times."
You have a golden ear bro congratulations!
Oh God! Bring my old Symphony X back!
Thanks very much for your video.
=/
Edgar Castro Yeah man. Unhappilly today we have screams and repetitive riffs in SX. =/
leandrostoneshop That even!! Exactly!!
I don't understand as this kind of music (with screams and repetitive riffs) can attract more "fans" (according to the album's charts).
Before, the "ancient" SX was a band with a sound UNIQUE.
Now, those contemporary metal bands, unfortunately, has a sound like the "new" SX, OR UNTIL BEST.
=(
+Edgar Castro Duuude, SX is still unique, Underworld was a masterpiece of an album, and yes, very different and more adequate for the times. They are kicking everybody's ass.
Carlos Duarte Unhappily, I feel that they lost a little of the essence. Today Russel screams more, melodic less and exaggerate of the drive vocal.
Romeo has repeating riffs so much. However, they still rocks!
romeo is tryin to get away fromm neoclassical as much as he can and thats why his riffs became the same ...he s running out of ideas at the same time doesnt wana use neoclassical stuff
Como dijo Timmo Tolkien de Stratovarius
Que la musica esta toda hecha, escrita. Solo hay que saber usarla y comprenderla y estudiarla y escucharla, por eso amo esta musica. Porque esta hecha para musicos...
There are four other songs
The Relic - BWV 811
Premonition - BWV 847
Seven - Moonlight Sonata
Secrets - BWV 232 Confiteor
I am surprised as we still discover more songs with classic references
I don't listen to Premonition and Secrets enough but I really like The Relic and Seven so I'm going to search for those (and how tf did I miss moonlight sonata???).
Edit: Beginning of The Relic and the Gigue part of BWV 811.
Edit 2: Fuck this is hard. Suspect one of the ending bits of movement 3 with the end of Seven but I'm not sure enough.
Premonition doesn't have anything to do with bmv847 are u listening with your asssss????
They are pieces NOT songs!
@@sethyboy0 There is a fragment of BWV 847 around the minute 4:00 of Premonition. It´s a short fragment, but clearly distinguishable (sorry for my poor english, it´s not my native lenguage xD)
@@silverstone3228 There is a fragment of BWV 847 around the minute 4:00 of Premonition. It´s a short fragment, but clearly distinguishable (sorry for my poor english, it´s not my native lenguage xD)
Great job!
They used the pieces in such tasteful ways.. to make it their own.. I love this video!!
I love how Michael romeo introduced classical pieces on prog metal 😃very amazing. Now can I listen the original songs too :-) thank you so much 😄
The only question is why did Symphony X move away from this style and will they recapture it with their next album? Awesome video, the fans want more V and Divine Wings than Underworld. Latest album was a disappointment and departure from their great works
I think they moved away cuz it's a lot more hard work to do and the sales aren't good ...the newer direction is easier in terms of composition and appeals to more kids today and sells more
@@silverstone3228 Fair points but that to me is selling out -- and also not what drew me to them in the first place. I respect the new direction and I guess I'll always have their earlier disks but there's better neo-classical bands out there nowadays making great music. Kill the tough guy machismo, focus on stronger lyrical and melodic writing and bring back the classical influences and I shall fall in love again
Also quoting the G Eb A B (G Es A H) motif from Uranus (Holst planet suite) at the end of The Odyssey (around 18:15) but a semi tone higher.
I love the old Symphony X but I really dig their style today. Their latest Underworld is a beast of an album.
Richie Rich Agreed ! \m/
+Richie Rich Agree! A true return to form. The previous two albums were good but not great.
kahwigulum I think it's a balanced effort on SX's part. It is meant to attract new fans and also the old ones to return to the fold.
Agreed. Underworld broke previous molds of SX, The production and power are unparalleled by any other band. The old stuff sounds a bit dated and borrows a lot from influences. The new album is blowing the minds of many of my friends who have never heard of Symphony X.
well it failed....i miss the days when symphony x when they used to write castlevania like music
Amazing though how Russell recorded all those overdubs for the Divine Wings song. My God that must have taken a long time all by himself.
My gf sang an opera yesterday. I recognized the part before Rusell sings in Through the Looking Glass. The opera is Tourterelle (Romeo and Juliet by Charles Gounod) and one part of it is exactly like the guitar lead in Through the looking glass 👌😀
its quite impressive how this guys incorporate various classical pieces in to their music.
Really good adaptations but that neoclassical facet has faded since Paradise Lost. I miss it
Since The Odyssey tbh :/
Michael romeo is a BEAST!🤘🏼😈❣😀
Bach is the father of music, I deeply respect those that drink inspiration from the fountain of classical music in general.
Magnificent! Thank you sooo much for this!
most comments are about Michael Romeo but don't forget guys that on the same note, MIchael PInella does the same solos and probably he's the one with more knowledge about classical pieces.
i know that this is old but with john williams as well.. haha
You seem to ignore that Romeo composed most off the material on his own
not demining pinella, just romeo is really a unique piece guitarrist of our time. Also not saying pinella isnt,
Y aún hay gente que cree que el metal son puros gritos y guitarrazos, que bonita es la ignorancia para el ignorante
Good lords of the paradise send back to earth the old Symphony X Plesaseeeeee
i pray for this all the time
The Divine Wings of Tragedy, Pt II.
still listen to this video, is amazing
one of the reasons I love Symphony-x is because of these classical parts
Lets also give it up for Mike Pinella's input & technical chops. It's buried in the mix on most of their albums, but he plays many keyboard runs in unison with alot of Romeo's guitar work. Not an easy thing to do.
That's why SX s my favorite band!!
I never realised that this was what was missing after The Odyssey. Now I know why I'm just not that into the newer albums
Nice work compiling this!
back when they were amazing....i remember the first time i heard them in the song sins and shadows my mouth dropped for like 5 minutes...i couldnt believe how evil and castlevania like they sounded,,,,now the fuckers are insisting to sound like pantera for some fuckin reason...what a loss for such talented guys
Castelvania lol, that is a good description. I sadly agree they've lost it.
you answered something I never thought someone could tell me!!! thanks for this video!! the smoke&mirrors interlude was a mystery to me and you solved it!!! i thought it was an original composition even though I knew he takes a lot from Bach. now I know that this part too was created by the great genius Johann Sebastian Bach. Makes me wonder how many more parts in their music are not original compositions.
The band's name truly reflects the masterful integration of these baroque, classical and romantic excerpts in their songs: Symphony X.
haha this was brilliant! love it! :)) thanks so much for uploading this
btw I have symx vocal covers if you like to check em out, cheers!
Rob Lundgren Live Vocals roooob
shut up
Absolutely awesome. Thanks for uploading this!
3:15 Steven Wilson
I bet only a few of sx fans knew there were this amount of classical pieces in their songs
This is very, very well done, Marc! Congratulations!
I hope this invites the SyX fans to listen more to the great composers whom influenced the Great Michael J. Romeo. :-)
originality isn't the most important aspect of music, you can be the most original and still suck. i mean, why didnt the first band to use a guitar sue the second band for doing the same? you dont cry foul when you eat a burger at wendys when mcdonalds was here first.
And furthermore they BOTH suck!
Compared with Dairy Queen today ..
DQ - June 1940
MCD - May 1940
WEN - Nov 1969
And at DQ, you can still get a true malt! (they use REAL ice cream)
You can't even get that at Sonic anymore ..
Never, ever could you get that at MCD or WEN ..
why the fuck would someone dislike this video? -_-
Just seen this vid. I always thought of Symphony X as an out of this world band. This must be one of the reasons. Conversely, I've always literally cryed to classical music, even when I was a little kid. I can't imagine myself being part of an orchestra. I would have to bring packs of tissues and stuff haha.
9:14... holy....so powerful
The divine wings of tragedy choir is absolutely amazing.
I studied some many of these compositions at school, but I much prefered Pantera, Dream Theater and Meshuggah. But listening now I appreciate the beauty and experience of this music so much. Also everyone ever has ripped of Mars by Holst.
Congratulations for making this compilation, really! Thanks!!
Makes me love the band so much more
excelente trabajo! :D
damn well edited ...smokin
4:28 Sounds A LOT like "Am I Evil?"
I'm crying. I chose well my forever favourite metal band
I WOULD BE REALLY INTERESTED IF YOU COULD MAKE AIMILAR VIDEO FOR Yngwie Malmsteen🤔
So incredible.
Symphony is my prefer band all the times
esse video é genial, poderia fazer de outras bandas como o Angra que usa bastante da musica clássica tbm
I always return to this video.
The best symphonic progressive metal band everrr!
Best Symphony X video!! Tks for that!!!
Awesome!!! 😃👍 great!! Thanks for this great edit...👍
Wow! Thanks for the video! Great finish with C. Abado
Amazing how I never got the Bartók one. It's so obvious!
Amazing work!! Thanks so much for this!!
thanks brother Marc! Symphony X is my love! 😍
Do you guys know some baroque metal band? Playing stuff like out of the ashes?
I think that the one within Out of The Ashes is more suitable for Dressed to kill, in another tonality
YOU ARE THE FUCKING BEST!
Waouh this is an awesome video 😮 So much research. So much work. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️🙏 You rock 🤘🔥
The only pieces I could recognize are the ones in the Divine Wings of Tragedy. I like that song!
Very cool ending... nice vid
man... i cried
Thanks for taking the time to put this together and educate.
I mean I had suspicions but to actually hear the pieces where they were taken from is fascinating! the fact that they compose original music and fit these parts in is genious, like how do they do it?! it's incredible music composition in my opinion!
been a fan of Symphony X since 2000 so I have these parts engrained in my mind
Aside from being a natural genius, Michael Romeo taught himself orchestral composition, I guess it's not that hard for him to include classical pieces in his compositions.
SX is the best band ever and Mike surely one of the best musician from those last 30 years
incroyable!
Great ending... Symphony is withoubt a doubt, the greatest epic band of metal. They should go back to sing of legends and epics of Europe...althought their material of the dystopia is also amazing
Eh. Bartok wasnt that similar. Also, every one claims that anything with a march with heavy accents sounds like Mars. I would also not identify that as being "the same" piece. Similar sure.
I didn't know such many classical phrase used in Symphony X.
Thanks a lot .
Wow! I really havent noticed this before. Great video. Thanks! ^^
When two of your primary influences are Yngwie Malmsteen and John Williams, this happens.
This video isn’t perfect because it’s lack of “THE SIMPSONS” beginning part at the end of Rediscovery Part II - Anyway I have to recognize there’s a good intention here XD
This blew my mind. Love symphony x even more now!
Это называется: в старые меха залить новую кровь. (This is called: pouring new blood into old furs.)
Please! Do it the 2º part!!!!!!
I pretty much listed all of them in this video ;) There's might be a few others that I'm not aware of though !
Fantastic!
well done Symphony-X !!!!!!!!!!!!
4:22 Pure Fucking Power Metal!

Cool way to honor the great classical composers. But in the same time, I'm a bit disappointed because I thought they composed some of these brilliant passages. I knew they used some classical parts, but I didn't know how many there are. All of these are my favourite parts of the songs
