For today's video, I wanted to cover color and light basics- While this was originally a video just about color, I felt like touching on color without touching on the other aspects of it didn't make for a fully informative video, so I tried to briefly touch on aspects of both color and light, and the importance of value in art. This isn't a comprehensive guide, but if there's interest, maybe one day I'll do a more in-depth video in the future! This is just meant to set some foundations for those who need it :)

I am also not a perfect artist and have many areas to improve in as well, though things I cover in videos are merely my own personal thoughts on how I approach art which I share in hopes that they may help others. If they do help, great! But if you feel like the tips are wrong or don't apply to your style, draw as you'd like- It's your art!

The point with focusing on character or focusing on emotions is such a good point! I haven't seen that before! A really great resource I've found is Jame's Gurney's Color and Light, which is more focused on traditional art but has a great approach on how to think about colors. Another one I've found super helpful is watching videos about lighting aimed at filmmakers. It's kind of incredible how much it's helped.

I really need to get that book!! A lot of my foundational knowledge is currently from Artists Master Series: Color and Light which I really enjoy but always on the lookout for more to expand my knowledge! : D And watching videos for film lighting is a great tip since a lot of it also applies to illustration!!

I just recently came across your videos, and I found them to be very helpful, including this one. Lighting and shading are things that ae high on my list of things I want to improve on with my own art. And while I have gotten much better recently, this gave me a few extra tips to make my art even more attractive.

Thank you so much for this video. It's so had to find an explanation on how to use light and shadow. The other videos are just showing the process, the filters, and the final result without an explanation of "why" and it's frustrating as someone trying to learn by drawing a completely different kind of picture that may require different kinds of lighting and shadow placement. So thanks!

5:08 I was surprised when you said the drawing on the right was more visually interesting, because I have to disagree. The drawing on the left draws my eye far more than the one on the right, and when you look at the values on each you can see why. The character is made up of mostly dark values, which draws attention to the character. The one on the right is mostly made up of dark values with only the one spot in the middle that is highlighted. Sure the one on the right has a higher range of value, but the one on the left has a greater balance of value, not too many darks and not too many lights. You can really see this clearly if you squint at the two from a distance!
But to be honest, I wasn't satisfied with just this answer when I thought of it. That's when I realized the other big contributor to the one on the left being more visually interesting is that the character in that composition falls right into the rule of thirds. the top of the hair and the jacket line up exactly with the grid, where as in the one on the right it feels almost uncomfortable to look at, not because the art isn't good (the artwork is beautiful!) it's just that the two points of interest, the characters face/eye and the sunrise, both sit near the exact center. I know this isn't the focus of the video but I felt like it was worth mentioning.
I say this with love! These tips are very helpful, and your artwork is wonderful! Thank you for making these videos

This is a great analysis, thank you for spending the time to write this out! I really enjoyed reading your take on it and how you also thought of different explanations for your preference!
I personally still think the drawing on the right is stronger visually, because even if the drawing on the left fits the rule of thirds, if the main focus of the drawing is the character, the character should be clearly visible, but it isn't. If the purpose was to just show the silhouette of the character then it would be effective due to the lower contrast of values on the character, but because the silhouette isn't interesting either, I find it a weaker drawing of mine.
Another remedy to this could be keeping the values as is but just making the lineart thicker which would help create some contrast between the different parts of the character's face, as the thin lineart along with the very similar values on the character itself doesn't create a strong impression. Or alternatively, changing the silhouette of the character so it's more interesting, so that instead of the face being the focal point, it's the shape or form of the character. Right now the pose is a bit stiff!
The drawing on the right also received double the likes on twt, and while obviously likes are not the best measure of art LOL I think because on social media people tend to like based on first impressions, due to the value contrast and clear focal point + clarity of face on the right drawing, the reception/first impression was better!
This was a lot haha but obviously it's up to personal preference in art! I just personally disliked the drawing on the left after finishing it, and my own analysis was that the value contrast wasn't as strong as some of the pieces that I liked better!
