It would have been nice if you even used a sound meter app on a smart phone to record the decibels where you were standing outside and then start the generator and measure the noise level again. I did a crude measurement and found a 15 dB noise increase when you were outdoors running the generator.
I'm in central Florida and am thinking of getting a whole-house standby generator (1875 sq ft house). Generac seems to be everywhere on recommended generator lists, particularly their 22kw guardian series. How would a 14kw Kohler unit compare? Better? Worse? Reliability? Maintenance? Able to run 24/7 for days at a time while awaiting power restoration following a hurricane? Thanks!
I've been told Kohler and Cummins are higher quality than Generac. Make sure you make a concrete house for your generator or else it'll be gone in Florida.
I've been an industrial commercial electrician for over 30 years. I had my Generac experience about 20 years ago- never again. IF you have a chance to physically compare the generator portion of a generac to a Kohler, you'll see that they have way less mass for supposed same KW rating.
@Lazy Way Either Kohler or cummins, both are properly built units. Just make sure to get a proper cold weather kit with the one you pick, if you get cold winters. Only reason Generac is so known is because of their massive advertising budget. I installed a small commercial Generac unit - single phase like the house ones years ago for backup for a customer's main data room. The power quality was so bad, when they upgraded to a higher end UPS unit to go with it, the UPS would not even recognize the generator power source because the sine wave was so bad.
@@jimdandy9289 Thanks for your input. I was about to pull the trigger on a Generac and while researching seeing so many people say don't do it. You are right it's their advertising. Everyone that I know who has a generator has a Generac and these people aren't the types to do a lot of research.
Sounds loud but i guess compaired to portable ones its not bad, i will be buying one of these very soon, so checking to see what types of generators kohler offers.
WOW, that is loud outside. The whole neighborhood now know you got a generator. 2021 these companies NEED to work on getting the noise levels done to levels comparable to at least a Honda Portable. COME ON AMERICAN COMPANIES GET A CLUE!
If you think that's loud, then you're a little lost. They were able to carry on a conversation 6 feet away from it. That's INCREDIBLY QUIET! Remember, nobody is going to actually stand right next to their generator while the power is out. They're going to be inside, maybe 20+ feet away. If you think you're going to go down to the 50 db levels of the generators used to power food carts, forget it, those are tiny 1-2kw inverter generators. Getting a 14-26kW generator at a 66 db level is insanely good. Anyone inside their house will barely hear it and it will quickly turn into background noise.
You're comparing two completely different things here, because if you were to compare a Honda that was the size of this Kohler, it would be the same Db level.
Good to know. I'm generator shopping and was going to go with Generac because everyone I know has one but I'm going with Kohler after hearing all of the Generac complaints.
This is good news that this particular model is relatively quiet i guess but what about the higher up Kohler models? Do they too use all these sound muffling items in those models as well?
They turn to liquid cooled after 24kw, meaning much less noise and RPMs, but also cost is a big difference. The air cooled models like these, are practically same motors in a commercial grade mower, but the casing makes them a little quieter.
Great videos , my only complain is the use of British Imperial measurements, this is a metric country after all, otherwise a very useful and informative video.
Can you please expand on the WiFi, the App & how to use it over my Cell Phone? Is there an App? Or do I need to run a Special line to the Generator? Generac has it included in their package. I just got the 22KW from Kohler.
Typically sound level ratings are at 18-20' from the generator. You demonstration suggests that this generator is relatively quiet. Nice though if you could produce some hard numbers as meters can be as cheap as a smart phone app.
Yeah that's not bad at all. Lol I have an Onan 12.5 kw from the 80's. It sounds like a truck with straight pipes and headers stating lol. My neighbors hate me. Anyhow I'm upgrading this week to the Kohler 20kw. That's gonna be night and day soundwise for me lol
You should really give more info on how to maintain unit and how close to house it can be and how much it costs to maintain it and maybe at a customers house
This is brutally loud, and mu neighbors would not be happy with me. Why can't you and the other generator manufacturers look at the Malie DCA-45MZ Generator, which is quiet by design rather than loud and putting a bunch of installation around it.
2 suggestions: First TURN OFF THE STUPID MUSIC Second take some of your profits from running a good business and get a hairstylist to fix the mess on your head. BTW that generator is loud.
If you realized how many potential customers use UA-cam videos to learn and make buying decisions, you would take this poorly produced video down and get a professional to help you. I will continue to research Kohler because I want to buy one but this video is not helping your business. The background music is as loud as the generator. Buy a $20 sound meter on Amazon and prove how quiet Kohler is.
Great demonstration, but ditch the background music. It takes away from your presentation.

Please remove the music from your video ..it overpowers and detracts 200% from your video's quality.

Please add more music to your video. It's just awesome.
We have a Kohler whole-house generator which runs once a week for maintenance. I have to open a window to hear it. The neighbors cannot hear it.
the bigger liquid cooled are very nice units, they run at 1/2 the RPM of the small air cooled, thus whisper quiet.
Good to know. I'm generator shopping and was going to go with Generac because everyone I know has one but I'm going with Kohler after hearing all of the Generac complaints.
Just curious does it sound like you are Revving a car slightly that’s what our cooler one is doing please let me know thanks
@cfoster6804 did you end up getting the Kohler. If so, what are your thoughts?
Wow. Is there anything quieter out there?
Right. That was loud! Especially when the whole neighborhood has gone completely quiet from loss of power it will sound even louder.
Thanks for the video
Is there a reason for the music?
Very helpful. Thanks for posting!

Your background music makes it very hard to hear YOU thanks for the video but I shut it off half way through because of your audio

Our neighbor had one of these Kohler generators come on during a power outage yesterday and they are annoyingly loud!
I have a 22kW Generac. It’s no louder than a riding lawnmower.
Our Kohler 38KW liquid-cooled is very quiet.
Sounds similar to the AC Condenser running next to my house.
Thank you !!!

What you're fired! Lol
You don't install these in open areas. You place where your HVAC is from windows areas..
YES
I bit more than 66 db.
Please remove the useless background music so I can understand what you are saying. Thumbs down for this.
I don't hear no background music all I here is him talking and starting the generator
great info.. loose the background music...

Can't hear ya
Maravilha

I have a 14K Kohler. Piece of junk after 1000 hours. Stay away.

That is loud as hell
