Excellent Video. I ran my Kohler for 10 days in Florida after hurricane Ian. Lucky I had a maintenance kit. My Kohler dealer couldn't come out to change the oil. When your running 24hrs a day 150 hour oil change comes up fast. I just ordered more oil filters, and spark plugs.
As someone who's looking to get a whole house generator installed, this is actually the part that's bothering me the most. Not only are you supposed to shut it down every 8 hours to top the oil off, you're suppose to shut it down, THEN WAIT 30 MINUTES FOR THE OIL TO COOL, **THEN** , top off the oil! Imagine every 8 hours telling everyone in the house, sorry, the power is going to be out for 30 minutes. It seems nuts.
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 I passed and saved the $17k, including having to upgrade my natural gas line from street to house and meter size. Haven't lost power in over a year and making money in the stock market instead.
I had someone give me a quote on a 26kW Kohler, that's supposed to be on 67 db. Honestly, the part that's giving me the most pause is the fact that you have to shut the generator down every 8 hours, wait 30 minutes for the engine to cool down, then top it off with engine oil. I think it's nuts that every 8 hours you have to tell everyone, "Sorry, no power for the next 30 minutes!"
No one ever wants to listen about the oil there's only 4 brands of oil I will use with my NG Generac stand by 100% synthetic Amsoil small engine oil, 100% synthetic Briggs and Stratton, 100% synthetic Kohler and synthetic Generac oil I'm not quite sure if it's 100% synthetic but it's really good oil has similar additive package to the others I mentioned
mine comes on twice a month for 20 mins under full load. i love it, runs 5000 sq ft house no issues. we lose power 5-6 times a year. its been amazing.
This is very helpful! Thank you!

What about cleaning the oil cooler? I couldn't take off the cover to get to mine.
Enjoyed the video. Do you keep some spare parts on the shelf?
Great video. Would be nice if you mentioned particulars about the type of oil filter needed and if there is a generic type that can be used.
I would run whatever your manual says.
Every 8 hours to check the oil is ridiculous, especially in a storm, or if you're handicapped.

I have his exact gen and it's louder than a Harley even with no load. Kohler can't make a muffler...
Same here. I had my installed about 30 yards from the house by the pool heater to minimize the reverb from the engine's exhaust "hitting" the house.
I have a guy coming tomorrow to give me a quote. Is the generator really that loud? Any questions you'd recommend I ask him? I live in SE MI.
