  • A quick video about adding a telltale to an old outboard motor. I have found it is helpful to do this so that you can always know if the unit is pumping water...Sometimes when on plane it is difficult to see water coming from the exhaust port. For a couple of dollars and a few minutes of time you can add some peace of mind and possibly extend the life of your old boat motor.

68 Evinrude 55 Triumph 3 Cylinder. Does not have any sort of telltale. You just made my day with this video. Though I'm not sure if I will drill into the cylinder head or the thermostat housing yet.

It makes me nervous and I've done it several times. But I really need the peace of mind to see that water pumping! Let me know how it works for you.

Nice video! Gonna attempt this on my 72' Johnson 50, hate that you can't tell if its pumping water without one

Yes! It drove me crazy, especially when my Whaler was on plane at about 3/4 throttle. I thought it wasn't pumping...turns out it was. PEACE OF MIND!

Well, this work for a 140 Johnson.

I don't know that model specifically, but take a look at the water jacket (and maybe a diagram) before doing it. If you can find gaskets, would be good to pull the jacket so you know exactly where you'd be drilling etc.

How to put one on a 2 stroke for cylinder 140 Johnson motor.

Id put a smaller diameter nozzle at the end of the telltale hose to keep pressure backing up inside of the cooling jacket fed from the waterpump impeller. Well the thermostat should be there to maintain the normal operating water temp as when it gets too hot it lets cool water in slowly to keep it it warm, not too cold once warmed up . Its not a good idea to run it cold constantly without allowing it to stay warm.

That would be a good idea!

    I also have a 70's 50hp. Do I really need this?

OMC didn't think you needed one :) Only YOU can decide if you "need" it. I wanted to be able to make sure the motor was pumping water @ all times. So I installed one.

Saul, no idea if you'll respond. Have a 1973 50 evinrude. We're these all designed without a tell tail???

Do a visual inspection; I don't know off the top of my head if they did or didn't...I THINK it was some time in the 70s when they started adding them. There should be a tell--tail outlet in the cowling if there is.

By placing the hole in that spot does it reduce pressure needed or take away from cooling?

I don't have an educated answer for you on that. That thought has crossed my mind more than once, but it does seem to be a small amount relative to the total amount of water coming through the system.

Does it have to be that big of a fitting or can i do a 1/8 npt fitting?

I think you could do whatever size fitting you would choose.
