    Victor says "For me being old is a gift. A lot of people don't make it." What an incredible perspective when you think about the context. Two of my greatest influences as a musician have been Jaco and Victor. That statement hit me. What a blessing it is to have Victor as he gets older, to benefit and hear from his years of experience. And what a gift that he has the mindset to age gracefully. How would the world of music be different if Jaco had gotten help, if we were able to benefit from his music and his journey as he aged through life's experiences?

    I had the privilege to see live Victor here in my very far town (Palermo in Sicily). An idiot in the audience left his cell with the sound on and during a Victor solo a two-note notification sounded!
    Victor stopped playing for just a nano-second and then played those exact two notes... and with the harmonics! AAANDDD... inserted those two random notes in his solo... and the whole thing sounded fantastic!!! Watta musician... and watta lesson: there are not right notes and wrong notes! It's all in how and when you play the notes!

    Listening to Victor's philosophy, even as a non-musician, I realize that live music vibrates more clearly. Not just when it's well composed or masterfully played, but when any of us create music, the barriers fall. When Grandma accompanies a grandchild's screeching violin at a family get together, or when a congregation signs a hymn, or when a parent sings a lullaby to a child, music is able to vibrate and touch us. So let's all make some music.

    • @spookyfm4879
      @spookyfm4879 2 роки тому

      So true. I made a lot of music in my youth (also as a bass player), but since getting a job and having children there's hardly any time. But I sing lullabies to my kids every day. I hum or sing along to music I hear every day. Sometimes I get to sit down at the piano for ten minutes. Sometimes we sing a birthday song to a someone. Now my kids wanted to start music lessons and I hope I get to play with them at some point. All of this is valuable and delivers the full breadth of meaning that music can make.

    To all parents, future parents, what Victor is talking about is letting kids have free time to just be and discover life and themselves, that's what makes them creative and gets them to discover a lot about themselves, those are life skills that can't be learned through structured play time etc. In my case what I did is NO TV, my daughter grew up with having plenty of time to draw, write, sing, compose, read etc, instead of sitting in front of a tv we went to the library, to the story time, we played music, did all kinds of things, those years can't be gone back to so make sure you allow your kids to grow and live by spending time doing their thing. She was writing novels, musicals with complete songs and all from age 5, it was not extraordinary because she had a lot of free time to do what she was designed to do and explore more.
    Tv and screen time will never replace unstructured child play!

    Incredible interview. This had a profound impact on me. I’m always so hard on myself, cataloguing all the ways I didn’t play well enough. My vibrato wasn’t even. I didn’t hit the bend in tune perfectly. My timing was off. That run wasn’t clean. I care so much about how good I am as a player and how there are so many people far better than me.
    I really needed to hear the last segment of the interview.

    So deep. So profound. One of the best interviews I've seen from any musician. Period.

    Wow! Can I just express the gratitude I have for you cats. We lost live music for the last two years, and I knew how much was missing from my life because of that. I used to be on a plane every week headed to a show, or a run of shows and with that being absent, I bought the guitar I'd always wanted, I built a studio in my home and started a podcast. I have the gift of gab, but I'm still a terrible guitar player, but I have those moments where something inside surfaces in the form of a groove that many times I forget how I even played it. I also came to the realization that I'll never be on stage, but that being part of the audience and getting those chills from the band when they are in "IT." and feeding that vibration and sending it back toward the stage it has a reciprocating effect and in a way makes the audience just as integral a part of what's happening on stage as the players. Much love, you guys! Thank you! Made my night!

    Can Victor Wooten even speak without making me have some mad epiphany/spiritual awakening? I need to go to sleep soon and my mind is absolutely lit up.
    I have a feeling I'm going to watch this interview several times over the next few years.
    Thank you so much.

    Wooten and Wong damn I'm in funk heaven, man Victor is deep and way beyond an awesome bass player. Cory is the best listener, maybe that's partly why he's such a great rhythm player....

    Mr. Wooten with incredible sage advice. I hope you bring him back, because I learned a lot from this 1 on 1. This was my favorite interview of all your interviews so far, and I'm not even a bass player. Mr. Wooten helped me feel alive through this interview.

    Cory. Don't know if you read the comments but stumbled across you recently on UA-cam music and instantly became a fan. I'm 59 and it is breath of fresh air to come across such a unique style. I've played drums for 50 years and played many styles over the years and far a away my favorite is progressive funk. Keep it up and I'm planning on seeing you in your upcoming Denver show. 😎🙃👍

    You haven’t lived until you’ve heard Victor Wooten’s bass concerto. I saw him debut it with the Boston Symphony Orchestra last year and the man is truly a genius. Talk about genre bending creativity.
