One funny anecdote about this group I heard last time I visited PHX. They were opening for Redd Kross in the early 90's sometime and brought along a large amount of instruments, which they set up while a tape of their music was playing over the PA. It took around 20 minutes for them to set up (they brought their gamelan) and as soon as they finished setting up, they immediately started breaking everything back down again. That was the set!
Love this. Thank you.
I was so lucky to have had a chance to hang out with Charlie for a bit before this show. He was one of the best.
Man were you ever lucky. How was he?
im getting goosebumps listening to this
Thank you for posting.
Just mind- boggling!
Thank you, Marc Masters! I lived in PHX for a decade, but I only saw them twice because they had moved to Seattle by then. The bass player in my former group grew up there and was pals with them, so he was able to get us an opening spot on one of their shows. The reason I mention it is because this former bandmate listened to them a lot and gave me records to hear. I didn't connect with it all until I saw them live, once in PHX and the next night in Tucson. Both sets were completely different, yet equally jaw-dropping. This group was sort of a gateway into a whole world of music of which I was unaware.
i'm so fucking bummed i never got to see em live
Damn Alan Bishop, that is an amazing bass tone. Footage like this feels like a flower in the desert of this wasteland of this culture.
what wasteland do you mean? I hope not American... because you can still go to Europe, and the streets, the museums, are still full of Jesus this and that.
@@ceef8688that is an American bass tone.
@@ColeWheeler4Lyfe it is a mighty mighty bass tone.
My friend and I were right behind you. Excellent video!!
I saw them only once, opening for JFA, 7/8/84 at the American Legion Hall in Orlando. They were great, and had the attendant skinheads from (there to see a local band) Tampa fully perplexed. A friend of mine swears he saw Charles spit into the air while playing and catch it in his own mouth. At the end of that month Minutemen played Blighted Area in Jacksonville and we drove up.
Thank you!
Killed to have seen this!
I love Charlie is stirring the sauce starting @ 15:30 or so...

I think we opened for them in phx in 1984.

Seen em, 5 times? one time, Gerry frm the hellcows was to my right, he said "wow, that was special." all I could was nod.
after one set, I yelled Again Note for Note. They laughed.
