Welcome to Whispering Pines Farm's UA-cam channel, "Soft Shetland Wool". This channel is about life on our farm where we care for our soft shetland sheep and their wool. I share videos of all that goes on in our farm life in my videos which are in the playlist "The Good of Work". There is a playlist about all the tools offered by Majacraft which I sell in order to help support the farm. I also show you the methods I have adapted over time to turn my sheep's wool many wonderful things including yarn, felted items and hand knit objects to name a few. These videos are located in my playlist called "Tutorials". Thank you very much for liking, subscribing, commenting and sharing my videos!
Breeding Sheep - Constraints we are Dealing with in 2024
Every year we breed sheep for spring lambs. Our goal is to produce fine, crimpy fleeces for handspinners to enjoy, and we achieve this through a very thoughtful, well planned breeding program. In this video I talk about the constraints we are facing this year and how they will impact our breeding plan for 2025 lambs.
Thank you for watching, I hope you enjoy this video

Upgrading Sheep Coats using the Handling System
Переглядів 591Місяць тому
The ewe lambs are due for an upgrade to larger coats as they grow so fast in the first year. I send the entire flock through the handling system in order to change coats on the lambs, replace coats on adults where needed and trim the feet on an adult ewe sheep. If you saw the Temple Grandin movie, there are elements in the handling system we use from her designs. The Squeeze Machine was what in...

Happy Christmas Jen and family ❤ My breeding groups are small (and together late this year, too, but that's life 😊) Let's keep our fingers crossed for lovely lambs come late May 😂
Aww, happy wiggly tail in the first minute. All so peaceful ❤
How odd, i didn’t see a notification this morning, just this one. I enjoyed the peace with the sheep and you. It’s nice to have moments like this when things are so busy. Sending you and yours love, Jen. ❤❤❤
And who are those you've separated off? Ah breeding groups
Who is the brown one with the white face and the black around the eyes?
What was that shove about in the beginning?
They are so beautiful.
Sorry I missed the live; I was looking for you at noon eastern, and figured you were off being a grandma.
Thanks so much! Great info and lovely people.
I know it's a long way to travel for you, but if you ever come down to Maryland Sheep & Wool, I'll bring a whole bunch of people to your booth! I might try to get to Rhinebeck in 2025. Thanks for all the background info on mills and hope you find one that can make lovely top for you.
Thanks Margo - I would love to go to Maryland, but it is right in our lambing season, so just is never practical for us.
@@SoftShetlandWool Ah, yes. That makes sense. I forgot that you are probably lambing a bit later than the shepherds here. Well, I hope to make it back up to Rhinebeck this coming year!
Watching after the fact. Hope all goes well for the baby & Mom.
Thanks!
So sweet. I love Shetlands.
Thanks! They are a very special breed of sheep
Hi Jen, the girls look great
Thanks Pat!
Love those sweet faces! Happy sheep.
Me too! They make me smile
Oh I missed the live again. Fun to watch the replay.
Thanks Margo
Do you remember the video that went viral around 2020 there was a herd of sheep & other animals in different places but all going in circles? It was very strange , wondering if you ever experienced the sheep doing this?? ❤
Hi there - thanks for the comment - I don't recall that but plan on checking it out, sounds interesting!
Hey Jennifer my name is Mckensey (Jareds Wife) I appreciate the informative videos on your Shetland flock. I have a question for you, my daughter and I bought several Shetland lambs in October here in SE Kentucky. Our one lamb Sweat Pea is starting to roo. We started to gather her wool got a small section on her shoulders done but then stopped thinking that it might not be a good thing for her to be "naked" these next few winter months that are ahead of us. My question is if we should continue to harvest her wool or just let the rest go and see if it just stays on her until spring time? I appreciate any advice you may have.
Hi Mckensey - thank you for your comment - I am glad our videos are helpful for you. I can't really say what is going on with Sweet Pea - it could be a variety of things causing her to shed her wool now including a recent stress she went through, unusual climate conditions or maybe she is just shedding her lamb coat. If the wool is coming off really easily, then its probably going to fall off and become waste. Were you planning on using her wool? I think if it were me I would leave her be this year and let it just fall off naturally. If you tried to put a coat on to preserve the wool I worry it would felt or get ruined anyways. It will be interesting to see if the other ewe hits the rise at the correct time of year. I hope this helps!
Thank you for getting back to me quickly. My daughter and I were going to use the wool to start teaching ourselves how to spin the fiber into yarn. I think we will take your advice and just let it fall off naturally if it wants to. We only even noticed she was shedding when we were picking the debris and small sticks that were caught in her wool out and noticed clumps were coming out nicely with it. If Thank you again for the advice!
Just checked my Facebook notifications and I am following you and it appears that I have notifications on, but I did not get a notification of the live feed.
Hi - I am doing the lives on UA-cam now. A couple people said they got the notifications just before the feed started on their UA-cam account. I am hoping to do regularly on Fridays at noon like I did on Facebook. I hope you can make one of the next ones!
Sorry I missed this!!!
I want to commend you for being conscientious and not breeding or selling breeding stock that might have an issue 👏 Not everyone is that considerate. All of my early years breeding Corriedales, we made it a practice to cull all ewes that had ANY lambing issue and finally got to a flock that was so easy to manage! Congratulations on the upcoming grand baby, best wishes to all!
Thanks Cary - trying to plan for results with breeding animals reminds me of a saying I read on the tag of a Tetley tea bag - "life is what happens when you are making other plans".
How is Mabel?
Great! She is such a dear thing - still very attentive to her flashy ewe lamb from last spring - they hang together all the time!
Will you breed Alice Paul this year?
Not sure, I have to go through all the data and see where everyone falls out
Yay a new video! Love to watch/listen...while I knit or spin ....❤❤❤
That sounds lovely!
Eating machines. Fresh hay and green grass is their happy place.
So true!
Crunch, crunch, crunch 😊 Love listening to the livestock munching away ❤
Haha me too!
🤍🤍🤍🐑🐑🐑
Thanks!
Love the camera being right near breakfast! Great shots!
Thank you!
Very peaceful morning❤
My favorite time of day
Lovely video, thanks so much for sharing. It's so relaxing to see sheep grazing live in real time without any rushing up or edits. It's very calming. It's at natures own pace.
That is so great! I am glad you liked the live feed!
I soooo missed 'Sheep on Fridays' Friday! So glad you're back... but I totally missed it today. I'll have to figure out how to set notifications - LOL!
Hi Chris - I'll try to set up in advance - new to using UA-cam so lots to learn!
Hi Jen, Loved to see when the sheep came up to you. They are the friendlies for sure. When are you planning on lambing this year? Can’t wait to see all the babies❤️
Hi Pat! Lambing will be mid may most likely - can't believe we are at breeding season already!
🥰
Hi!
Im sorry I missed this live. I didn’t get any notification .
Hi Margo - I kind of just did it spur of the moment, I will schedule them going forward - looking forward to chatting with you next live!
Do you like those white huts you have out with your ram lambs? Does it keep them comfortable over winter?
The white calf huts have worked great for us - we use them for breeding groups, quarantine pens and for longer term quarters for rams. They can fit a surprisingly large number of shetland sheep and have good ventilation. The shetlands love the cold! Winter months are their favorite, they struggle more with the heat in the summer
It's so awesome to watch sheep videos. Thanks for sharing
That is so cool! Glad you are enjoying the sheep
Thanks for sharing this moment with us 🤍🐑
You are very welcome, thanks for watching!
Ik wil zak met wol kopen 😅 op stuuren naar nederland ik betaal .
Thanks! I haven't figured out yet how to ship raw fleeces internationally - I need to research that!
I always like to see how other people do their chores 😊 For the first time in about 20 years, I had to start feeding hay in September, even though I have a lot less sheep - ugh. They're still picking at the pasture but not much there! Love your lane
Thanks Cary - we just started hay this week - can't stand how it gets in my bra and under my shirt!
Nice, I'm considering sheep of my own some day.
Sheep are awesome - never regret our decision to add sheep to the farm!
I get you!
Haha cool!
Loved watching this video of your morning work. You take such good care of your sheep❤
Thanks Pat - glad you liked the video!
Abby here…thanks for your videos, some of us can’t travel anymore. So your info keeps us very happy. I was the first wool judge at the sheep and wool festival, we had about a dozen fleeces. Going to go see if you are offering the “ more textured” roving for sale. I know you said you were not going to sell it on line, but I’m hoping it is there. I love combed top, but sometimes my designs need the more natural look. Thank you , thank you for your videos and adventures.🐑🐑🐑 👍
Aw so nice of you to say! I didn't put the roving up - if you are determined I would be willing to send you a small sample and then you can decide. I am spinning and knitting it up now and am picking out a lot of hay bits but it looks pretty good!
Thanks for sharing the video Jen! I absolutely love watching you care for your Flock!! You take such great care of them!❤🐑❤
Hi Karla! Hope all is well!
What are the coats for?
We use the coats to keep the wool clean - I sell the raw fleeces directly to handspinners who wash the wool and make yarn from the fleeces so they like the wool to be nice and clean with no bits of hay or poo (VM).
@@SoftShetlandWool oh, I see. I probably should have figured it out! Your sheep 🐑 are gorgeous, beautiful wool. It gives people some insight on all the hard work it takes to harvest wool. Thanks for the info ☺️
One of these days, I hope to meet you, but it probably won't be at Rhinebeck; from everything I hear, the festival is just way too crowded for this human.... until then, I rely on folks like you who provide recaps of their own experience. I love the support you are providing for folks like the coopworth shepherd who can't sell his wool. We need more of that. Do you know Melissa / Knitting the Stash? She does something similar. She's not too far from you-- in Ithaca most of the year. She also has a YT channel (Knitting the Stash). Down here, we used to have Solitude Wool who bought up local wool, processed it and sold it. But Gretchen just retired and shut down the company. Ross Farms or Ross wool was at Rhinebeck; they sell breed specific wool/yarn. Have you met them?
Hi Jillian - I look forward to the day we get to meet in person! I don't know that I would enjoy the festival if I weren't vending - it is really crowded unless you come on Sunday. You know a lot more about the farm yarn business than me! I am not familiar with Ross Farms.
That was a lot of work. The handling system worked great.
Oh man, that system has been a game changer for us
It seems sheep make lovely pets. How loyal and friendly are they compared to cats and dogs?
Many of my ewes are very sweet and like affection, but I think dogs and cats are more dependant on us so express more loyalty than sheep. I had one bottle lamb that i imprinted on, and she would follow me around - right up until I merged her with the flock and then she would come up for skritches, but she was happier with her flock.
Great video and love the Finger Lakes Fiber Festival sweatshirt. I miss that festival.
Haha thanks Jaye - it is my favorite hoodie!
Thank you for this video..as a newbie sheep mom...I was wondering if my little ewe laambs were already outgrowing their coats...and now I know they definately are. Seems like you always show the info I need! My little girls are now leading well..and I am loving having them. Also the cool closeups of the wool...was very enjoyable too! Thank you SO much for sharing your beautiful flock with us.❤
Thanks Martha! That makes me feel terrific, so glad you are finding our videos helpful. Give your little girls a hug from me!
