- Journey through 1983 in Film with The Cinema Snob, as it was the year of Return of the Jedi, 3D films, Conan & Mad Max knockoffs, terrible sequels, two James Bond films, and tons of Cold War paranoia.

Return of the Jedi all the way guys!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

The perfect end the the Star Wars OT
Hmm that a dick haha
Only acceptable answer is Return Of The Jedi. Nothing else happened in 1983 aside from the release of the third best Star Wars movie.
@@John_Locke_108 Still like Revenge Of The Sith.
I was nine year s old in 1983. I had been waiting for Return of the Jedi for three years. That was a third of my life at that point. I saw RotJ six times in the theater and loved it every single time.
Fun Fact: For Return of the Jedi, the Emperor's chair was mechanized so that it could rotate when the scene called for it. However, the mechanism never worked properly, so Ian McDiarmid had to make it move by shuffling his feet. A piece of tape on the floor told him when to stop so it would not be visible to the camera.
So?
@@rjb1216what do you mean so? He said fun fact. It’s just something he finds interesting. Not everything has to have a point.
"All I wanted was a frickin' rotating chair!" - The Emperor probably
@@rjb1216 The mental image of Palpatine shuffling his feet to spin doesn't amuse you? You're dead inside man.
@@rjb1216what a tool to say "so"?. I appreciated hearing that fun bit of info. Makes me laugh to picture the emperor getting huge calf muscles trying to move that chair around .
Almost 4 and a half hours of Cinema Snob?! That's just great!😃
_Return of the Jedi, Scarface, Christine,_ and plenty of "so bad they're good movies. 1983 may not have been as big as the previous years, but it had some great films to be sure.
Agreed
Christine is so good.
As this series creeps closer to my birth year I feel older and older lol. Love these videos though
@@kill4551 shut up. It is MY birth year! xD
Uncommon valour came out in 83.
The scary thing about Wargames is that it very nearly happened in real life about a decade and a half later. Russian radar misinterpreted weather balloons as ICBMs, and had the officer in charge followed orders, we'd be in a nuclear war right now. And just like in the movie, a computer glitch really did cause a false launch detection in a different incident.

“The only way to win is not to play.”
Just showed this movie to my 13 y.o. the other night. It's one of those "you have to understand..." movies.
I can't believe that these movies are now 40 years old! Scarface, Flashdance, Vacation, Return of the Jedi, just to name but a few!
…. I was born in 1983. I reject that it means I’ll be 40 this year
Reject it all you want, I'm right there with ya. I turned 30 this year, yep, 30, nowhere near 40. No sir, not 40 at all, I was born in 1983 but I'm a time traveler see, so I missed about 10 years. Head Canon. @@GinDragon
These Year-In-Movies reviews are the best things on UA-cam. I always discover some great films I've never even heard of before! This time the undiscovered classic was Vigilante, which was sleazy, gritty gold.
The Year of My Birthday Snob, 1983!!! 🎉👏
Thank You for ALL of this, All you for a Your Hard Work & Love you put into this Retrospective!!👏🙏😃
Happy 40th 🥳🎉
Same! It really was a great year 🎉
2:14:09 is Risky Business if anyone's like me and it's your all time favorite movie; here you go! Kick ass video Brad, this was the year I wanted the most and it hasn't disappointed yet. 1983's one of the best years in film imo. Glad to see it get some love.
I saw it in the theater our mom took us and I was five years old
These retrospectives are gold and will be watched for years to come. Thank you!
pulling an all nighter needed something to watch!!! thanks brad!!!
Love these 80s retrospectives. Thanks
My high school graduation was 27 May 1983. Our baccalaureate ceremony was on the 25th. Me and my best friends went to see Return of the Jedi the morning of the 25th, and then our entire senior class caught a late show after the ceremony that night.
Return Of The Jedi will always be my favorite as well. I still tear up and get chills when Luke is in the throne room
Never Say Never Again & The Rock is the proper send off for Sean Connery as 007. Klaus Maria Brandauer is an underrated bond villan. 3:13:02
I loved The Keep in 1983. What a cast! I would have loved to have seen Michael Mann make more horror and supernatural films like this and Manhunter. Please release the full director’s cut!
Nothing like random 4hour marathons.💀
I just could watch the first hour in one seat, see you tomorrow.
I speed it up to 1.5x, it only takes 3 hours. 😆
I slow it down to .5x so I can savor it.
x2 speed for me
Why use the skull emoji?
I look forward to this series every year. Thank you so much, Brad 😊
I really love the full year retrospectives and this is one of the best.
I absolutely love these! Hope he does a video for every year of the 80's!
Definitely remember going to the movies in 1983 to see Return of the Jedi. Also remember everybody in the movie theater cheering when Darth Vader chucked the emperor down a garbage chute.
In 83 I went to preschool 😐
Try kindergarten, but I remember everything in Jedi.
Before Kathleen Kennedy ruined 'Star Wars'.
I'm really looking forward to the Cinema Snob's 1984 in Film retrospective because so many of my favorite movies came out that year.
29:49 Holy crap, Snob! I remember seeing this film on local access WNDS in New England when I was a kid! (shout out to Weatherman Al Caprillian) and I remember really loving how simple it was even if it wasn't a film made for a younger man like me. Thank you for helping me remember what it was called, I thought it was "Strangers in the Night" since that was their song at the end.
@3:30:37 - As a huge Andrzej Zulawski fan, I've always wanted to hear your take on his films (or The Snob's). Possession is one of my fave's but I'd pay to have you spotlight On the Silver Globe, Brad! It's a lot.
1983 is such an underrated year during the decade of the 1980s.
It sits right next to 1986 in terms of underrated 80s years.
I’m a 2001 GEN Z Kid kid and I LOVE THE 80s
83 underrated, yes. 86 was awesome but is rated fairly
No, it's properly ranked as one of the weakest years in movie history.
I absolutely love these year in review videos, Brad. Thanks!
Easily my favorite series of yours and possibly my favorite film related content on UA-cam.
Hi, a slight side track but still about film: can you plase create a tribute to the late and amazing Kevin Conroy? He passed away last year, and was the sole reason I got into acting. On MsMojo there was a video about the best voice acting in animatedmovies and I think he should've been included for his role in Batman the Mask of Phantasm (the scene at the cementary). I have a VA background and there are some preconceived notions that it's not as demanding as regular acting; but the vocal training itself and perfecting the craft may take more time than any acting school. l feel like he's very underrated as Batman and even non existent in the conversation.
PS. You almost saw me as Leon in those new Resident Evil games :)
I absolutely love these year in review videos, and appreciate how much time they take to make:) Highly entertaining:)
*"Sudden Impact,"* the fourth "Dirty Harry" film where the famous quote "Go ahead, make my day" came from, was released in this year. *"Halloween: Season of the Witch"* was around, too, as was *"Stephen King's Cat's Eyes"* with James Woods and Drew Barrymore amongst the cast.
1983 was an awesome movie year: Monty pythons the meaning of life, Scarface and above all as a stars wars fan Return of the jedi!
Keep beign amazing guys!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The Meaning of Life is easily the worst Python movie of the 3 movies. Scarface is just a god awful remake, everything about it is so cartoon especially Pacino's Looney Tunes accent. Its sad how many not very bright people also seem to ignore the actual overall message of the movie and instead seem to want to emulate the character.
Cinema Snob, these Year in Reviews you do are masterful. 1983 was no exception. The work you must put into them, its really something. SO many movies I've seen or heard of, so many I want to see now thanks to you.
Still completly watchable at X1.75 Speed. 😁
I was cramming as much in before work as possible.. (TWSS).
Another great episode. 👍 👏
“Gaspar Noé cited it as an influence” HOLY SHIT.
Thank you for the reference to Bert and Ernie’s plane ride in Follow That Bird.
I feel shame I’ve never seen Joysticks
Thank you. THANK YOU for covering Get Crazy. it is probably my fave 1983 film. Please do cover it for New Year's Eve! The whole 1983 episode was terrific.
2:09:30
When you said 'Pauline at the beach,' I heard,
'Paul Lynde at the Beach'
(Which would be it's own disaster) But trust Brad's knowledge so much, that I thought. 'Shit, I've been saying his name wrong all this time!?!? LoL
These videos are amazing, keep them coming.
Woohoo!!! It's truly a great day today! Love these marathons Soo much
Glad you like them!!
@@ChannelAwesome they open my eyes to so many movies I haven't seen or heard of which is truly awesome.
Thanks for finally doing this video. Been waiting for it for over half a year, but it was worth it. Many of these movies have been covered in other UA-cam movie reviewers’ channels, so I might just check them out.
39:50
I was just watching MST3K Cave, or if Joel prefers Cav`eh Dwellers.
My favorite part, the Skit where the gang reenacts the faux imaged, title sequence!
Great Episode S#3 EP#1
Cheers from Canada
The written ending of Time Out is the best never filmed!! Vic Morrow should’ve got a Best Actor Oscar nomination!!!
Fun Fact: Trenchcoat was about as close Disney ever got to an R rating, and was the film that caused the creations of Touchstone Pictures.
I also wish this was posted on Brad's personal channel.
Good covering my birth year!!
Of course Return of the Jedi would be the primo film of that year!
But it’s also the year A Christmas Story came out! Only later on television would that film become the holiday staple we all know today.
Although these kinds of episodes will eventually be impossible to make anymore, the have become ones that I look forward to very much.
Joysticks needs it's own Snob episode, then maybe Uhura will finally let Scott McGinnis out of the storage closet. Also, Corinne Bohrer should've been a big deal.
Yeah, I should go to an arcade, and play 'Space Ace' in peace without any business men ruining it.
Over 4 hours of the cinema snob in 1983 well time to crack the beers and stay snobby
‘Rumble fish’ is a great film by Coppola, one of his best. His later film ‘Tetro’ covers a lot of the same themes, is also in B&W and is equally fantastic. The two would make a great Coppola double feature.
great soundtrack on rumble fish
I saw the play ‘Betrayal’ on Broadway during a high school trip to NYC in ‘80. It starred Roy Scheider, Blythe Danner, and Raul Julia.
Lucky! I never got to see it live, but it was one of my favorite things I read in undergrad-I even did a project on it for one of my classes. (I studied theatre and literature.) I've been afraid to see the movie, tbh.
Thank you: For 40 years, I was trying to explain to people why they either didn’t see Pirates of Penzance or didn’t remember it playing theaters, AND why I was still carrying a grudge not to watch an “In-Home Premiere” of Disney’s live-action Mulan during the Lockdown for $30. 😡
(And yes, Superman III was a “troubled production”: It was originally intended to be a Brainiac movie that introduced Supergirl….BUT THAT’S NEXT YEAR! 😃)
3:10:14 I disagree with the analysis,it's actually the contrary, this movie shows us decades in hindsight what damages a scorned failed woman in show business can do,it exposed that because she has no real talent(even if she thinks she does),she will fuck her way to the top,and then will later on weaponize it placing herself as the "victim"to take her revenge on society,we are currently in it.
I love your compilations guys! I know what i will do with the rest of the day now! You guys are the Best!🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤
Man this is amazing!!! Such an amazing gift!!!
"Come see 'Mausoleum'! It's not 'Mortuary' why you make that mistake?" OMGGG HAHAHAHH
First; Why is this not in your channel, Brad? I didn't realize it was out until YT randomly suggested it to me.
Second: Well, One Night in Heaven was the movie that made me realize I was gay, haha.
2:27 I only know of Xtro because Double Toasted did a bad movie roast of it that one time.
Absolutely brilliant. Thank you.
I’ve always had a soft spot for 1983: it was the year of Return of the Jedi, The Big Chill, Brainstorm, Blue Thunder, Christine, Chained Heat, Cujo, Curtains, Daffy Duck's Fantastic Island, The Dead Zone, The King of Comedy, Jaws 3-D, Krull, The Hunger, Lianna, Mickey’s Christmas Carol, National Lampoon's Vacation, Nightmares, The House on Sorority Row, Octopussy, The Outsiders, Pieces, Psycho II, Revenge of the Ninja, Ricky Business, Rumble Fish, Scareface, Sleepaway Camp, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Spring Break, Superman III, Trading Places, Videodrome, WarGames, Yor, the Hunter from the Future… good times
Excelent episode. You should make a list of the movies reviewed...
I typically listen to these at work and don't look at the screen because work reasons. But I picked up the phone and looked at the screen right when the dummy got pushed under the wheel in "New Barbarians" and about died laughing
Turkey shoot looks like it was left in the vault in 1971 and didnt come out until 12 years later
Tiger Town was filmed all over Detroit. I was in the movie with my aunt as extras.
I would watch that over the crap Disney Channel movies we get now.

1:21:35
I sure as hell remember that, 'face ripping Aliens'
'Fangoria Magazine Cover!!!'
It may not be time yet for Robert England's Freddy, to grace the cover, (more times than any other actor) but if it wasn't for 'V' , the Nightmares that haunted us the rest of the decade, may never have been...
Nice, been wait all year for this 😜 It hasn't been cut down for UA-cam reasons has it? Only I saw the logo for Cujo pop up around 3:31:00 but then nothing was said about it.
He talks about it around 2 hours 17 minutes
1983 was an Aykroyd triple-feature year with Doctor Detroit, Trading Places, and Twilight Zone: The Movie. Also...Dan's wife (Donna is not an ex because they are still legally married) is in Doctor Detroit and Twilight Zone: The Movie. Superman III of course has the iconic robot transformation that scarred a generation of kids. And also my favorite Star Wars movie Return of the Jedi. Also 'Man With Two Brains' has Jeffrey Combs who in two years later got to play a mad scientist himself.
Gotta give Dan major props for his love of going to the movies.
My birthday year! Ive always been fascinated by movies from 1983 for that reason.
Thank you! This is gonna help me to get through work🙏👊
I was gonna make a Bowling for Soup joke but I'll have to wait 2 years.
2:20:39 Um, how did i get here from choose your own Guttenberg? I'm going back in...lavalantula has to be in here somewhere!
4 and a half hour long video from Brad let's gooooo!
Rock N Rule was made by the Canadian animation studio Nelvana, before they hit it big with The Care Bears. It's a movie that I have seen multiple times on the CBC as well as other Canadian TV stations. I would have been too young to have actually seen the movie in 1983. It was always a little 'whatever' for the plot, but I loved watching it for the animation and background paintings. It was like OVA Japanese animation made in Canada.
This is gonna take me right up to bedtime. Thank you SNOB🎉
I’ve been looking forward to this ! Thank you !
I was 13 in 83 great memories. Love your channel
2:21:46
Well, considering Roger Moore was in Cannonball Run, back in 81. That movie could have been a curse for both,
although 5 year old me, could never get enough of
'Cannonball Run'
2:28:26 RIP Taylor Negron AKA Milo.
'Pieces' it's exactly the poster that scared me out of video stores as a kid! Yes, there are few surprises, after you've seen the poster but the 2nd Brad taught me, that it was Eli Roth's favourite film, I finally fugured out why there was a,
Karate "Pancake" Kid in
the movie 'Cabin Fever' .
Quelle Hommage, Monsieur Roth!!
It's a film full of Kendall, Chainsaws, 'Bastards!!' , to the power of 3 and even though it's in my own top 10, 'IT STINKS' See it asap, before I spoil anymore, that's of course, IF you enjoy the finest in film Massacres.
Thanks Brad, for bringing me and this film together!
P.S. Monsieur Purdom comment ca va...Tueur!!!
Just excellent... Really enjoyed this video! Keep 'em comin'.
That's my weekend taken care of. Thanks Brad
2:55:15
Sometimes it's like Brad is reading my mind.
I just had a conversation last week, about how annoying it is when people say, that a specific film/movie/song
didn't age well!!
Wine ages, we age. Movies were made the year they were made.
Who cares if it's offensive to today's audiences. It was not made with you, or your year, in mind!
So when the Snob says, 'The movie is not a reflection of 2023, it's a reflection of 83!'
I actually cheered! Because he is right.
People don't make movies, in order to predict the future, or to please everyone.
Just make the damn movie, don't do survey's and use checkmarks just to be sure the movie is "right" for everyone!
Cheers to Brad. There's a reason he still makes content as good and in some ways better, than 99% of the others.
He understands and is passionate about film.
Should we ask for much more?
2:46:06 I think thats the Leprachaun movie Director , or the one who directed Part 3.
Looking forward to 1984 in film next year!
(GHOSTBUSTERRRRRS) AVGN: GHOSHTBUSHTERRRRRRS!
😃 nice shoutout for The Entity and The Stephanie Miller show! ❤️😂👍
11:48 The Entity is incredibly underrated. I’m glad The Snob likes it.
Congratulations Brad!!!
1:48 - 1:53 "🙄😒He said he was going out for a pack of 🚬 cigarettes; that was 8 years ago."
Congratulations on your upcoming fatherhood! I wish nothing but good vibes and blessing for you and your family! I bet that the kid will have a great time with Santachrist.
Thanks, been waiting. GOOD job.
My wife and I actually really like The Sting II, and I was very impressed with Lalo Schifrin's score, especially his use of Joplin's and Chauvin's rag Heliotrope Bouquet. The only thing about the film I really didn't care for was the choice to use boxing to carry out the sting.
Gotta agree with "ValleyGirl"... 😆
Still, Ep. VI is one of my favorite theater memories at age 5.
BTW, "Puberty Blues" was one of the influences on "Barbie" and was made into a TV miniseries in the 2000s.
1983 is a banger year. Don't know about the movies, but it's when I was born! Kidding, movies were great, especially my #1 favorite movie of all time, Scarface!
The Bishop of Battle sequence wrecked me as a kid. 2:48:58
If not by accident, I would've completely missed this gem as it weren't on the main channel.
Glad to know I was born in a "lesser year for film, not one of the best."
I know that the Star Wars movie of all time came out in '83 and that's something.
"When I was in Jr. High renting truckloads of slashers about every week"
We, sir, had very similar Jr. High weekends
02:38:38: Fittingly enough, this was the same year that Fist of The North Star began release.
Hey! 1:42:06 That's Giancarlo Esposito behind Eddie Murphy!!
