Hi, I hope all is well! I just started looking at my family ancestry and Sir Richard Lowther is my 12th Great Grandfather!! I hope you are doing great and have a great day!
I’m a lowther too from north east of England .. but I’m a cook in name by marriage now I don’t know my lowther family as my father had a affair with my mothers sister so my mummy divorced him 😮 we don’t speak .. my beloved grandpa George lowther died age of 45 I was only 5 years old so i cant find out about my extended lowther family
£4,000 a week in 1870 was £467,000!!! (According to the web!) Great place, I can imagine that to avoid death taxes meant that the earls had to take the roof off. Back in the 1940s / 50s, the NT didn’t have the cash to take on such a building sadly
I did enjoyed wondering around this lovely building. We did ask the girls doing the strimming to pause for ten minutes, which they did, although started at the end.
My grandmother decends from the lowther family. I was told the contents were sold and direct decendants used the money to buy mines in South Africa and Western Australia. Big disapointment because the castle is way cooler. Such is life.
Great video, always when seeing these huge buildings wonder how they managed to build them all those years ago. Very interesting. Thank you Robert and Richard.
So sad, the money squandered that could have kept this magnificent castle in perfect condition. The selfishness, vanity and arrogance is hard to comprehend.
Very cool I just started looking at my family ancestry and he is my 12th Great Grandfather!! I need to take a vacation to check this all out! $4K month!! Wow It was a great video!
Amazing sad story of rack and ruin. Thank you for the tour. And hmm. Highclere? I’m just not so sure. Maybe there needs to be a Lowther Castle BBC on the life and times of the 5th Earl. They could fully restore the ruin?
This is the first place you should go when you get your drone......the second is the tree in the Gap at Hadrian's Wall if you can keep from getting in trouble---again. The third is that magnificent Church sitting all by itself in the Romney Marsh.
Wow that is truly amazing, it's a shame to see it in such a state of disrepair,it would be nice to see it slowly restored by the current Earl. If I ever go North myself, that is somewhere I definitely will go! Great video Richard I really did enjoy that one well done you both👍
How does one get an 'entitlement' of nearly half-a-million a week??? Where did the dosh come from??? (and who was being fleeced to make it?) Great story as ever Robert, about a remarkable fellow and his remarkable mansion. Today, possibly far more interesting in its current state with it's remarkable back-story ..?
Nigel Sadler I was lead to this video after watching ”Millionaire miser hated by all -James Lowther” It seems it's been handed down through a stream of unmarried Lowthers.
I rather like it in the ruined state. I am sure if they restored it it would be less attractive, knowing how they work these days with new fangled ideas.
Why this MAGNIFICENT CASTLE that keeps all its structure intact has not yet been Fo has it been restored ??? Could it be that with its RESTORATION, this CASTLE wouldn't acquire more value???
As a Lowther, I have prints of this castle on my walls and have visited it on occasion. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.

What an impressive building even in ruins, and Robert has such a wealth of knowledge thank you both.

This castle belonged to my wife's, fathers ancesters.. fabulous building.. last time we were in the UK it was not open to the public
Thank you for posting this.
In its day when it was used in full it must have been really impressive. Thanks Richard.
It must have been overwhelming to the visitors. Can you imagine staying there?
a splendid location very interesting to hear about there. video well presented as always by the both of you
You know me, I just rock up and let the other person do all the work. :)

It is hard to imagine the builders putting it together, but fabulous that they did.

The word 'spoilt' comes to mind.
@@RichardVobes yes, agreed! What a shame…
What an amazing structure, enough to dwarf any visitor. Imposing and grand. Really enjoyed seeing this one.
Thanks Andrew - I love a great castle, especially when it isn't muck about with too much modern nonsense.
Beautiful castle 💯👍🏻💯👍🏻💯👍🏻💯👍🏻💯👍🏻

No - not as grand as Highclere, but nevertheless an impressive building..
Beautiful castle, lovely walk
Thanks very much.
Found out my family on my mothers side her father is descendants of The Lowther’s Castle. Our relatives came here to the US in the 1700s.

Oh yes - lovely places. Probably wouldn't be allowed to fly the drone over Lowther Castle, being on private land, sadly.

So pleased you enjoyed it George. I like it very much as it is without restoration and then use my imagination.

I agree, the ruins lend themselves to heightened imagination and study.

That would be even more impressive if they ever got it restored 👍

It certainly has been restored since this video...today is January 12, 2023🙂
😮😯😲😍😍😍!!! Beautiful!!!!
But at least Highclere (aka. Downtown Abbey) still is a functioning manor house today! Shame the Lowther's let it fall into ruin like this.😢
Yes such a shame it fell in to ruin.
Great place as usual
Thanks Tim.
I'd have to scale back my life style significantly....but I think I could hang out there awhile.
You might need a roof first! :)
That must have been quite a place in it's heyday ?...Part of it looks as though it's still lived in ??
I believe one wing has survived and is lived in.
The 5th. Earl was a founder member & 1st. president of the Automobile Association which adopted his livery........Yellow
Oh right - how amazing!
Just got a video from Marq English. In the comments you were mentioned.
Marq is a friend of mine. :)

black mountains of Skye owned by Clan Macleod
Why not go back farther into the history of the family?

Don't know. But its just about value but heritage.
"You can imagine what kind of balls he had there". Err, hmmm.....
I suppose you can! :)
A fool and his money are soon parted. 😅
