  • Verdi‘s Requiem was first performed at the Church of San Marco in Milan in 1874, with Verdi himself conducting. Now, 145 years later, Teodor Currentzis unveils a powerful new interpretation of this major work - at the same venue. The performance features the MusicAeterna orchestra and chorus, including the four vocal soloists. Viewers will experience firsthand how Maestro Currentzis brings out the best in his musicians.
Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) is perhaps Italy's best-known composer. He wrote 28 operas, but only one funeral mass. The Requiem is dedicated to the memory of Alessandro Manzoni, a poet and novelist whom Verdi had very much admired.
Teodor Currentzis is one of today's most talented and innovative conductors. He was born in Athens in 1972. From 1994 - 1999, he studied conducting at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory. From 2004 - 2010, Currentzis served as principal conductor in Novosibirsk, where he also founded the MusicAeterna orchestra and chorus. From 2011 - 2019, he was music director of the Opera and Ballet Theatre in Perm. He is now the chief conductor of the SWR Symphony Orchestra in Germany.

Theodoros Currentzis (Greek: Θεόδωρος Κουρεντζής) was an already trained and professional musician in Greece before he decided to further his studies in Russia. (He studied music and violin in the Athenian National Conservatory in the departments of Theoretical Music and String Instruments. At 15, he started studying composition under professor Yorgos Hadjinikos and later with professor Shreck. While still in Greece, at 18 (in 1990) he takes over the direction of the musical scheme «Musica Aeterna» and the management of the International Music Festival at «Porto Heli». After finishing his studies in Greece, in 1994, he decides to further his studies in conducting with the famous Ilya Musin in St. Petersburg State Conservatory.)

Yes, definitely Greece did not invent what is considered classical music, far away. Does this mean that no Greek and very importantly Greek trained artist be at the top? Germany did not invent theater either. Does this demean Bertolt Brecht or mean that Germans cannot express an opinion about theatre? I don't get your thinking. This is idiotic as much as it is racist. This is definitely not a politically correct thinking of you dear!

This documentary says nothing about why it's a "new interpretation", only how great the conductor is and what a great genius Verdi was. I would like to know, for example, why the soloists are placed inside the chorus during the final Libera Me, and why the musicians are standing instead of sitting, and what other new things Currentzis found in the score. A disappointing, not very informative documentary.

DW’s other doc on Currentzis and Beethoven’s Ninth is even worse. We are told that conductor and composer share some kind of spiritual brotherhood-like, for instance, a bad temper. I’m not surprised Currentzis is unpleasant in person, but it doesn’t reveal anything about the Ninth Symphony or the differences in approach to Beethoven that will have practical value for those who take any time to listen to the music he and his orchestra has recorded. This is all the worst and useless traits of classical music culture, right here, in these kinds of videos, and they only get in the way of listeners who want nothing else but to enjoy some of the most moving and beautiful music ever written.
