Dear 武田康弘, thank you very much for your comment. We are very pleased that you like this documentary about Verdi's Requiem with Teodor Currentzis so much. Please, stay connected with us. Your team from DW Classical Music
Verdi's requiem is more opera music than church music. i prefer Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, but this is a great new take on an old horse. I prefer a heavier, more 'spinto' mezzo but the rest of the cast is superb.
This documentary says nothing about why it's a "new interpretation", only how great the conductor is and what a great genius Verdi was. I would like to know, for example, why the soloists are placed inside the chorus during the final Libera Me, and why the musicians are standing instead of sitting, and what other new things Currentzis found in the score. A disappointing, not very informative documentary.
DW’s other doc on Currentzis and Beethoven’s Ninth is even worse. We are told that conductor and composer share some kind of spiritual brotherhood-like, for instance, a bad temper. I’m not surprised Currentzis is unpleasant in person, but it doesn’t reveal anything about the Ninth Symphony or the differences in approach to Beethoven that will have practical value for those who take any time to listen to the music he and his orchestra has recorded. This is all the worst and useless traits of classical music culture, right here, in these kinds of videos, and they only get in the way of listeners who want nothing else but to enjoy some of the most moving and beautiful music ever written.
