I literally made a rule for my X Nuzlocke that trades are permitted so long as the needed pokemon is a genuine encounter. Well... You can fish for luvdisc in the same town! Thumper ended up not seeing much battle though because I didn't want to risk losing him 😅

Did you know, Mindy was a cover up for Game Freak somehow breaking In-Game Trades in Gen 4 and not bothering fixing them? Aka, in-game trades in gen 4 will NOT trigger evolutions.

I wish pokemon would use the npc trades to help out those who don't have other people to trade with. It was such a wasted opportunity to fix one of the main issues a lot of people have with the game

shout out to the fact ghost+poison is a worthless type combo in paldea. especially when you don't have levitate.
Since Kadabra just ignores Everstones for some reason, it would've been funny if Mindy traded a Kadabra instead. Maybe they script the sequence so that Mindy taunts you right before the evolution sequence and then she's all shocked.
In-game trades don’t trigger trade evolutions in gen 4.
I was so glad that Pokémon legends Arceus included the item “link cable“ which basically allows you to evolve Pokémon, who would normally only evolve through trading.
Yeah. I’m so mad that didn’t return in scarlet and violet. I know you can catch trade Evos in raid, but I shouldn’t have to wait many days just to find the raid.
And using the items to evolve Pokemon right away. Alpha Scyther turning into Alpha Scizor just by giving it the metal coating is such a nice feeling

The Everstone Haunter is disguising an issue in the game that prevents NPC trades from evolving when they should.
Even if Haunter didn't have the Everstone it wouldn't evolve into a Gengar
guess they didn't have enough time to look at their codes again.

If this is true, it's not recorded anywhere in the bulbapedia pages regarding Gen 4 glitches or the one on in game trades, and there doesn't seem to be anyone else who's brought this up... so I kind of doubt it's true. Sure, people could just not know, and bulbapedia could be inaccurate... but nothing at all?
There is, however, a glitch making it possible to evolve trade evos in gen 4 through the GTS without actually trading them. So we kind of have the opposite of this.
Then why have the trade in the first place?

I’m neutral since I only ever mainly grew up with Gen 1 and 2. Not much of Gen 3 besides LeafGreen and only so far have I played Heartgold for Gen 4.
When I was a kid, I didnt know Haunter evolved via trade so when she laughed at her successful troll, I was just a confused child that basically said "ok". Didnt learn until well after I managed to beat the E4 and Cynthia that Haunter evolved via trading. Still proud of Gaspar though, held her own even as a Haunter and was a member of the team that got me my win Vs. Cynthia back in Pearl.

In Ruby/Sapphire, there's a trade in Pacifidlog Town asking for a Bellossom in exchange for a Corsola.
Corsola is kind of a pain to find in Hoenn. I think you need to use the Super Rod in the water below Evergrande City or something like that. But Bellossom is even more precious (especially for Sapphire), because you only get 1 Sun Stone in a playthrough and you can only get new ones from wild Solrock (5% chance for them to hold one).
Compound Eyes on a dead Nincada in the front of your party, and a Shuppet with Thief second will take care of any and all of your held item hunting needs
Find a Pokémon with Frisk and give it Thief.
I don’t know if this works for Gen 3, but I personally took full advantage of how early you can access Stantler with Frisk in HGSS. And it can learn Thief by TM.

Here’s a questionable one. Not for the player, but for the NPC.
In XY’s Cyllage City Pokemon Center, and NPC asks for a Luvdisc. What do you get? A Steelix.
This is the most one sided trade in any Pokémon game. A STEELIX. FOR A LUVDISC. BEFORE THE ROCK GYM.

Luvdisc is a water-type Pokémon. Water-type moves are super effective against rock-type Pokémon unless the rock-type Pokémon's other type resists water

Meanwhile, the Steelix you receive will have Gyro Ball already in its moveset.
In USUM in the Pokemon Center right outside the Normal type trial there’s a trainer who will give you a Hawlucha for a Spearow, helpful for not just the Normal trial but Hala soon after
If its any consultation. You can catch wild gengar in ultra sun.

Whoever programmed Mindy to give her haunter an ever stone must’ve had the worst day ever and wanted to spread that misery to anyone that dared to accept her trade
I realized recently the devs probably gave Mindy's haunter an everstone at the last minute because it is possible to get a Gengar in DPPt through having GBA Pokemon game inserted into the DS. So basically they made Mindy a jerk because of a game mechanic GF probably added towards the end of development and they didn't want her trade bogging down the rarity of the GBA insertion Gengar.
No, it was given an everstone to mask that NPC trades were glitched in that gen. Even if it didn't have an everstone, it was glitched to not evolve and I guess they didn't have time to fix it, just add a few lines and quickly move on.
@nnHuh so I guess there's multiple layers to this. It's weird that they wouldn't evolve though considering its still just the same thing as trading with another player unless they coded two different modes of trading internally?
@@functional200 I've heard programming described as being a murder case where you are the victim, the investigator, and the criminal all at the same time. The people who found out it was glitched during production probably didn't know what happened to the code either, and likely didn't have the time to explore the code to find out.
@@rozegunn I wonder why they write the extra code of giving an everstone to hold instead of just changing the pokemon you get in that trade. Wouldn't that be the easier way to solve that problem?
@Crysticia Probably one was faster, or they had a reason for it to be Haunter. Benefit of the doubt and Occam's Razor says that the Everstone was probably the easiest/simplest solution.

Emolga can be found on that route, but it is only a 10% chance in SHAKING grass. It can take a long time to find even if you know how to aquire it.

This is actually why I love Legends Arceus so much, no trainers with risky trades and trading to complete the dex isn’t necessary. It can be an entirely single player campaign if you have enough time and devotion to the game. I really hope Legends: Z-A will be similar in this aspect.

Legends Arceus gave us the Link Cable. Only for it to not be used in future titles.
It's ashame we don't have an item that allows us to find wild pokemon that is not native to that specific version.

There is an NPC in Pokémon Red who does the same thing, you can exchange a Pokémon (I don't remember which one) for a Hownter but he is holding an Ever Stone, when I made this exchange and saw that he didn't evolve, I was disappointed and angry at the NPC at the same time

As someone who had their first game as pokemon Yellow and used that machamp till endgame then played gen 5 parts 1 and 2 with it's clever mechanic for the emolga trade, that girl in snowveil actually pissed me off.
For context i spent actual _hours_ training a modest meditite for my team, unclear about the natures until my brother told me.
Needless to say I hate icea for letting that trade f*cking stay for "as faithful as possible"

Fun fact: apparently Gen 4's code didn't allow for trade evolution Pokemon to evolve through in-game trades, so Mindy's Everstone is just a cover-up.
Keep in mind that traded Pokémon gain experience faster so these Pokémon you trade will be a higher level than most of your team as you play through the game

About the Emolga for a Boldore, Emolga are super rare while Boldore can be found very easily in caves…located on *either side of the city he lives near*…
Oh and on the opposite side of Mindy, we have the absolute *chad* who gives you a STEELIX for a Luvdisc
A steelix you get before the second gym, a gym that is weak to steel and ground (the gym leader’s Aurorus especially), for a *luvdisc*…which you’re guaranteed to get in this city using an old rod found in that same city

That Emolga I got from the hiker actually killed Cheren’s Serperior during my battle with him on Route 10 thanks to Air Slash flinches, which allowed me to beat him on my first try.

Friendly reminder...scarlet and violet gives you a trade where you can get traded a haunter...WITHOUT AN EVERSTONE, meaning Gengar is accessible with ONE copy of either game if you do that trade. It's as if Pokemon was trying to say "Yeah sorry about that lady in gen 4..."
I like to role play in my pokemon games and help all npcs i find. I usually go out of my way to find the pokemon they want or do whatever they need. Extra points if they give me a good rewards, like the wings/feather things in black 2
