Inside A Light Filled 2-Storey Landed Home With Open Entertainment Spaces And An Indoor Tree

In this week’s Living In episode, we tour a landed inter terrace home designed by Jacqueline from Plystudio Architects (she was featured in our podcast in which you can view here). Most people looking to buy a landed home would look to do a complete rebuild, but the clients opted to do an A&A on the existing old landed home.
To combat the usual problems of ventilation and a lack of light, they designed it with 3 insertions, 2 at the front and 1 at the back. This allowed for a skylight that lets a whole lot more light in, and increased the floor size from the existing 180 sqm to 220 sqm. What we really like is the car porch with the hole in the middle to allow for a proper sized tree that lends a lovely sight every time you return home.

What does landed home mean in context to Singapore? I've never heard that term in the UK

Like the idea of the tree in between, but I am a bit concerned that the tree roots will cause problem in future, or am I thinking too much?
How do you ensure that the roots of the "growing tree" won't rupture the flooring or tiles around it?
My seemingly harmless potted Xanadu papaya plant caused cracks in the pavement near it.
i think they add more steel bars to it and pour concrete to strengthen the structure, its the same how they do roads here in our country surrounded by large acacia, narra trees.
and I have visited a retrear house that has a pine tree inside near the fireplace, you can clearly see the roots outside of it, but the floor inside is not ruptured or damage.

That's true! Thanks for sharing your thoughts Edmund. These days when there's greater access to information and buyers are more affluent, the difference between private homes and HDBs can be hard to tell apart 👌

Reallly like the fact that the owners kept it to just 2 floors instead of tearing it down and turn it into a 4 /5 floors house which is so common (& some really ugly) nowadays.

Nice renovation. I think it is suitable for 2 to 3 occupants. If you have a large family consists of 7-8 members, may not be suitable

Ceiling fan that spinning fast isnt really helpng to cool down the room temp, hot air goes up so the ceilng fan was just blowing it down back to you.

The problem with this type of design with the tree is that the space could have been used for cars instead. For someone whose focus is on entertainment, this design thinking is contradictory. Unless parking space ouside is abundant, but these places do not have reserved lots for owners so it's always a risk.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Ray! That's a really valid point. Fortunately the area around here isn't too bad in terms of parking, unlike more central areas where competition for lots are stiff 👌
20 x 70 feetsq landed property nowaday cost 400 - 500k for a couple & some guest. Not feasible.
In the end there was no showing of the whole renovated house.
They dont show much of the houses. Watched most of the videos and most of these short videos focuses on the people not the houses. I wish the videos are longer and have more details about the house. Still nice tho. Really like the vibe. Very relaxing

I always find these airwells and void spaces to be very wasteful, but each to their own 🤷♀️
😂😂😂 Yes void spaces are really a luxury. They're not quite practical, but they do add a different feeling to the space. In this instance, it helps bring in light and ventilation to the inner parts of the home.
i think it is a consideration of Form over Function, therefore directly linked to lifestyle(s) and even number of occupants. if it is a multigenerational family, void spaces will be highly coveted, but if it's a small family or just a couple living, it makes perfect sense to open up the volume and enjoy it. why live boxed up and cramped in rooms? in cities where homes are small, luxury can be redefined not just through expensive objects but also more intangible elements like Light and Space. to me, this is the true modern "luxury".
RIP the design ... The open space for the tree to grow were narrowed... 😔

I don't agree with the house, but hor by the fact they didn't go and tear down and build some monstrosity I'm quite appreciative, don't go and build some eyesore that bring down the whole row value.

@@StackedHomes; also some society do not like bamboo trees in their garden. These bamboo plants grow in bunches and the tree is about size of adult arm. When there's strong wind blowing the trees rub against each other and the noise made is just like the wailing of you know.. banshee/pontianak..🥶😱
Trouble starts when there's no strong wind but the wailing did not stop... 😱

Too bad not only can the owner see the tree, but the neighbors can also directly see you. That's the disadvantage of not having a bungalow
Good point! Privacy can be a challenge in non-bungalows.
