What a great build! A lot of great ideas built into this, and much better than most you can buy. Putting the fridge close to the cab is smart- weight is centered. Keep the trans lines hooked up to the radiator. It is important to warm up the trans fluid. When it's cold out, and every cold start, you will accelerate wear on the trans if you disconnect it.
Thanks! That’s one of my favorite parts. Originally It was going to open rearwards or upwards. I didn’t like upwards because I wouldn’t be able to open it in a parking lot. I didn’t like rearward or sideways because it seemed like it would be awkward. Then a friend suggested down with steps like an airplane. Still can open it with a car parked in the next space but it’s worth while. The one downside is the stairs kinda get in the way of reaching for things in the camper and the camper floor would make a great worn surface. Hmmmm....this gives me an idea. Maybe make the door quick release? I’ll have tk thing about that.

Great Build - I'm about to buy a Tacoma for solo overland travel going to Mexico & all points south. Do you figure you ever wanted to have or needed a 4 door instead of the Access Cab? Knowing the quad cab is a bit longer and heavier. Or are you just fine with the Access? Or a question to the host of the channel - If you had a built out box like the featured rig - would you prefer to do it on an Access cab instead of your quad? - THX
Thats a good question and i think for solo travel a access cab is the way to go. It gives you more bed space which allows for the weight to be better dispersed.
@@OverlandUnderBudget THX - that is pretty much what I was thinking as well. If you have a dry cover over your box bed you need less cab storage. If you don't have the box covered you probably will want a DC for more dry storage. And I just don't like the looks of the DC.
Hey cool just ran into ur channel.. and what mark was talking about the trans cooler. YEP. DONT LEAVE THE COOLER HOOKED UP WITH FACTORY RADIATOR. Man I had a ruptured theater coil and what a expensive mess .. had t flush the whole system out because it mixed antifreeze with oil and YOU WILL DESTROY YOUR TRANS IF YOU RIDE LONG WITH MIXED ANTIFREEZE.? Be careful and if it's fine already. Please do yourself a favor and separate it ASAP. COOL VIDEO Keep Up the great work. ✌️✌️✌️✌️
haha yep, i think it just totally depends on what "you" enjoy. Sleeping on the ground is great, building is great. Pick what makes you happy, don't chase others dreams and have fun!
If you don't venture too far off-road, minivans are excellent values, because you can simply throw an air mattress in the back (or make a more elaborately furnished build without needing to make the weatherproof shell). For soft-roading, many have AWD available, including 2004+ Toyota Sienna, Toyota Previa, pre-2006 and post-2019 Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth, pre-1999 Mazda MPV, Chevy Astro/GMC Safari, Ford Aerostar, among others.
Quick question I’ve noticed ARB everywhere, is it pretty much the ticket for 1st gen bumpers? I been looking at them just wanting some encouragement or info on getting one
Like he was saying, cold fluid is hard on a transmission - especially when below freezing. It also depends on how far a typical trip is - having the fluid warm up quickly is especially important when driving shorter distances.
Not much so far but I have dragged both rear corners of the camper a little. I’m planning on building a new rear bumper at some point which will have some more protection for the rear of the camper.
me personally I would just wait for a 4wheelcamper or bite the bullet on a new one. I have a hi roof shell only thing i hate is that i cant stand inside it .
Thanks for flying our Tim (Timmy the Toolman) sticker.

good to know, thank you!
For sure.
Weight wise one of my goals was to keep as much of it between that axles as I can.
That was great. 2 great guys too. Cheers from Oz 👍🥃😁
Sweet build! I appreciate both of you taking the time to share.
Yo, when the door flipped open w/ the ladder on it !!! Wowwwwwwwww.
Thanks!

Dude you're awesome! Love all the ideas and finding other to share their ideas. Great content! We need to get together and share ideas.
I am in love with this camper rig… hopefully one of these days I can do something similar.
Awesome rig! Really diggin the camper. Great job.
Thank You!
He needs a hilux badge, to match all the Australian stuff on it.😂👌
I got loads of inspiration from the Australian stuff!
Mark wucher Aussie gear is the best.💪🏻👌🏻
Did great. Consider inexpensive wired or wireless mic to get better audio.
Thank you! Yes definitely getting one soon!
@@OverlandUnderBudget see, I'm not the only one. Get the deadcat too.
I could probably speak louder too...lol
Awesome walk-around guys. One of My favorite generation of Yotas.
Awesome video and very cool build. Thanks for the inspiration.
"This is my toilet bucket and also my shower bucket.." LOL!
I love to see your invention , you are genius .
Please keep in contact with him. Excellent content and inventive the core of your channel.

You Taco fellows sure are a strange breed. 🤣 Great video! I appreciate the technical details. Sub'd.
Great looking camper gave me some good ideas

I really like that!
Its a rad build for sure!
Man this is great thank you for sharing.thank you mike for the build
Thanks dude!
Awesome vid dude! What transmission cooler did you go with? I def need that for my 04 taco.

Great episode and a inspirational.
The best take away I get from watching these viddys is sleep on the ground. Building and wheeling a camper is just not in the program.
haha yep, i think it just totally depends on what "you" enjoy. Sleeping on the ground is great, building is great. Pick what makes you happy, don't chase others dreams and have fun!
My camping background is backpacking. Before this I slept in the ground with no tent.
Sometimes I miss that simplicity.
@@MarkWucher Switching from backpacking to car camping takes some getting used to. When you start talking fridges/freezers, sky is the limit.
@@allenajello1980 yeah, no kidding!

Scout campers are cool. I would look into it.
Ill have to check those out!
Quick question I’ve noticed ARB everywhere, is it pretty much the ticket for 1st gen bumpers? I been looking at them just wanting some encouragement or info on getting one
From what I've gathered, yes, because it has the best fit and is also touted as a sturdy bumper
Gears make a huge difference
Yes super excited to upgrade soon
I’m so looking forward to proper gearing!
Sweet rig!
Agreed!
Thanks!
I see the Rock in the background. Are you form SLO/central coast area?
yes sir!
Digging your channel. Are you local to Santa Cruz and where was this video shot?
They are right bout the trans cooler.. Bypass it all together 1 cooler and 1 rad for engine.. ya bingo

Can you show us his leaf spring
sweet relay panel :D
Lol...yeah I need to clean that up.
I’ve always been taught/told to keep as much weight between the axels. What has the effect of the increased departure angle been on off road travel ?

.. very nice! 🖒😃
Thank you! Cheers!

Pretty rad
What trail is this?! Looks sweet!
Just a local hill haha

That departure angle though

Nice... Upgrade your mic .
Ultimate overland build? It can't be with out the 100 lights positioned every where.
Funny you say that...I’m cool with a head lamp.
I might add some interior lights in the ceiling when I build that out and the tent etc.
Don’t buy goal zero get ecoflow, bluetti, anker, or pecron
Or spend$1500 to get a 4wd suburban and throw a sleeping bag in back
Haha yes that too! I love suburbans!
