My favorite guitar player in the whole world. Mark K. is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This Sultan is 41years old, and still swinging. Mark Knofler’s gift to the world. Thanks you.
Love this beat😎

he was 41 years old already in 78 lol
this was cover by the Reo brothers for now,
@@pablodebella7695 He was a young buck around 28 years old
In 44 years does anyone think people will still be listening to any current hit today? Really hope music comes back to great sound like this sometime soon.

Agree with you mate
It’s all studio and the companies make whoever they want famous. Very little talent involved anymore.
I listen to it weekly...love this song.
You say that because you know what music is 😊
This was 45 years ago. A time era with great guitarists. No one on this planet will ever be able to do it again.

Never again.
Every generation has there greats
Dimonds and rust
Summer of '79, a three month hippy honeymoon across Europe. It's around midnight and we're running through the Munich train station trying to catch an overnight to Vienna. Sultans of Swing is playing through the station loud speakers at full volume. First time hearing it. The feeling of euphoria is still there...over 40 years later.
the only band who delivered good classic rock in early 80s!
Неодна.❤
Mark has a God given talent for sure.
This song is a masterpiece. Nothing more, nothing less.
Mark is an absolute professor of the guitar.
Yes i😎
A guy that I used to play with was absolutely obsessed with him. They had very similar finger picking styles. He used to beg us to play this with him. We got to where we actually had a really tight cover of it. We used to play it for sound check. It was good because everyone has distinct parts. He had the solos down. Not me, I'm like "guitar George". I play chords with a pick ..... Boring I know. Usually though for soundcheck you play like 1 minute just to tweek the levels and everything. So we're in this bar one night doing soundcheck, and the soundguy never stopped us. He was amazed that we were a 4 piece and everyone was good enough to actually play that entire song. He was a fan after that.
finally the only one who’s able to play perfectly this monstrous piece of guitar masterpiece
well he did write it!
I was young kid taking guitar lessons when this came out.
I remember thinking thats the best guitarist on the planet.
This song and performance is as relevant today as it was 42 years ago, only much more appreciated as a timeless piece of music history! Thank you Mark and the Dire Straits crew.
Holy shit....has it been that long...
Damn right!
❤
THIS SONG IS IMMORTAL
I'm 76 and still cry when I hear this group. They're mesmerising!
Me too !👍😀i' m french and i listen very often !!!!🙌

Beacause it’s the sound of our Younger years, best memories and all
The first time I heard this song was the summer of 1978. I was in the backseat of my dad's 77 Chevrolet Caprice 4 door, while driving along the shore line of Grand Traverse Bay Michigan. It was late afternoon and we were on vacation going to our hotel on the bay. I told my dad to turn up the volume and he did and me, dad, mom and older sister rocked out to it. Well, at least me and my sister did, but our parent didn't seem to mind the song. To this day when I hear this song, it takes me back to that moment. Good times!
+Geo B that's what it's all about, cheers
+Geo B awesome!
+Geo B Nice story! :)
+Geo B Great memory!
K. W. Churchill Over the years, it's a memory that has just kept repeating in my head every single time I hear the song. It's just one of those songs that is intrinsically linked to a moment in time. I thought it was the most badass thing I ever heard in my life up until that point.
Mark is praised, quite logically. But the trio behind him is also really awesome.
I have to come get my Sultans of Swing fix every so often - it's just such an exceptional, evocative song in every way. The lyrics put you in every roadhouse you ever wandered into. Needless to say, Mark Knopfler's guitar performance is a lyrical classic.
One of the best songs in rock history. I've been a fan of it since the first day I heard it. One of my all time favs :)
Best comment thus far ! Agree ! 👏
Mine too...
Almost hear it twice a week....the last part of guitar is the best
The whole album just came out of the blue, landing smack in the middle of dying 70's dinosaurs, snarling insipid talentless punks, and cookie cutter corporate rockers. Dire Straits might as well have come from another stsr system. Their music was so different and yet so timeless and familar. I love the feel of this album. It has a warmth, a whiteness, a kind of authentic purity. The only other record that matches it in terms of this feel is Television's eponymous third album--another classic for anyone who loves great guitar playing.
Ditto.
Agreed. I've always thought it was pretty sweet too!
Knopfler's Strat sound is nothing less than iconic. With so many things that he's throwing out there, you almost miss the iconic P-bass sound coming from the bass player. Such a great song. I could listen to Knopfler for days.
Agree I am just noticing that wonderful bass on this recording. Epic.
Mark Knoppler greatest guitar player ever
You can't be cooler than this guy playing this song.
@@emmanuelaube6458 Well, he's one of the most known guitar players of the whole world, everybody knows who Mark Knopfler is.
Or happier....
Lovely to see how much Mark is enjoying this performance! And just improvises his bridging licks with that fluid mastery of his guitar. One of the joys of watching Mark is the different ways he plays his songs!
The first time i ever head this song was in summer of 1420, as i was about to joust in a seemingly hopeless battle. This song pulled me through and follows me to this day.
Liar, this song was released in 1654.
+Rodrigo Andrade Khé jajajaja
+Rodrigo Andrade maybe he is using the Islamic calendar?
shit im trying so hard not to laugh out loud
Reading the comment above this one then reading this one, lol :)))
This is by all means the definitive version of this song!
This song never gets old. Way ahead of it’s time. And it doesn’t rely on repetitive choruses, just great lyrics and stunning guitar work.
😊
Yes🙌 to all of that
All the band do and amazing work ...😊
Can't believe this is 1979. Seems like yesterday when then came out. Awesome guitar tone.
Not that I could ever play like Mark, because I can't ! But, kudos to the camera man (who is probably a guitarist himself) for staying on Marks hands and strings for us to see Mark in action for such a long time. Nice job cameraman.
You're right. So many miss the chances to see his hand and finger work and that's just as important as the rest of the video.
@kostabakalas, Not that I could ever play like Mark, because I can't !
Nice job cameraman.

Wow Mark, i was in my rebel teens when i partied with my friends and came across these songs. Been listening to you since and passed passed your songs to my kids and now enjoy hearing my grandkids listening to you. Love you Mark, thank you for carrying me through my best years with your music.
Wow wow..great Mark Knopfler..it is not easy to rule the world of music for so long..this is masterpiece..Sultans of Swing with his fingers doing magic on guitar..still there is no one to equal him..love from Pakistan..🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰
Most guitarists can only dream of playing so fast with no distortion. His precision and tone is the stuff of legend. 💪
There's nothing particularly fast in this song.
@@zorkan111 you are either a metalhead, or a meathead.. metal guitarists are cool I guess, but mark is playing a real guitar. Not some shred stick with active pickups. This dude is one of the best ever.. he didn’t have UA-cam to teach him
@@zorkan111 and it’s not only about speed, speed while maintaining soul.. one of the hardest things to do
@@williamherd7251 I agree that Knopfler is one of the best, but you don't have to put down other genre of music to prop him up. "Shred sticks" are real guitars too and nothing wrong with active pickups either. BTW Mark Knopfler uses active pickups too, and so does David Gilmour so I guess they're not playing a real guitar. As for speed, I agree with Eqinor that this is not a fast song, even for a non metal song.

The unmistakable sound of Mark Knopfler at work. Timeless.
Best Dire Straits period, thanks to Pick Withers.
The greatest guitarist ever ❤️
This song earned it's place in universal history.
Grew up with my father playing dire straits, this song stuck with me, me being 25 now he passed away two months ago, my father lives on through the music I play.
Must have had good education. Tks for keep dire straits. Your Dad was o great guy . Greetings from Brasil .
He'll be helping you your whole life Walk...
Me too... My father loved this band, he passed away 3 years ago (July, 4th 2018) 😢 With my brother love the music of 60s, 70s and 80s.
Oooooooooooooooooooo
My dad hated music for the most part. He only likes Dire Straits. Every time we go out on the boat he'd tell me to throw in the cassette tape, and I never realized how that would stick with me. I miss him so much. God bless you, and I'm so glad that you have the music and the memories!
I'm dancing/tapping to the tune.. even lying in bed...whenever i hear this original version of the young MK...thank you MK for creating this wonderful song!
Wow this is nuts. The singer is the lead guitarist at the same time. I never pictured it like that. I learned this song on guitar a while back... but playing it like that *while doing vocals* ... that's just on another level. Unbelievable talent.
True talent!
Then he fingerpicks that Strat on the clean setting. Such a unique sound. Unparalleled.
This song is one of the best in the world ;still lot of people like this band; outstanding profermance!!!
You can thank Louis Armstrong for that! Fact!
The solo notes of the verse are during the voce breaks, nothing impossible 🤷🏻
My entire teenage years were in the decade of the 1970's. I am so blessed to have grown up with the best bands of all time, drove American made muscle cars, raced two stroke motorcycles and hung out with girls wearing hip hugger bell bottom jeans and platform shoes. Thank you Lord.
You got that right!
🙌
Yu me too.
Q
Yes
I was at college when this was released. Along with Pink Floyd's "The Wall", Sultans of Swing was the soundtrack to that period. We had heard nothing like it before and it has become a timeless classic.
noonsight2010: Fkn A. Plus Heroes. I miss the late 1970s.
This song was a breath of fresh air ......in the disco era......of 1979.
Punk killed Disco, and this one killed punk!
I remember listening to the song in 1978 for the first time. Never heard of the band before never heard a prior song from them before it wasn't like some songs where they need to grow on you this was an instant smash!
this 1979 video really shows how good mark knopfler was, is, and will be. his effortless embellishing of his own song as we know it, is fantastic. the runs are beautiful.
+Stephen Chase it's really great to have youtube to compare how his performance of the song has evolved, while this is not one of my favorite versions, it is interesting to contemplate that perhaps that audience may have appreciated this performance, now over 35 years old to the ones performed more recently, point being that time and place are also relevant to how it is perceived. (I love the look of the audience, so great to see the style of the day in all its glory!!)
Mark Knopfler made the decade, made history. What would life be without this solo and this track? Wasted.
He is a master!
This is a song I will NEVER get sick of!
Ich höre 55. Jahre diesen Song. Unglaublich. He
Timeless. It never gets old hearing this year after year.
I agree
a must be amongst the top 5 of all time best guitar solos
Dan Noz my favorite
I think so, IIRC. I believe in Rolling Stones Magazine a while back, when they asked many of the greatest guitarist alive then to vote in their opinions of the greatest solos, this was up there but it was beat out by the Hotel California solo. That one speaks to you. I love the note selections in this one, as well.
This and “free bird” by Lynrd Skynrd
Listen to Sultans of Swing Alchemy live. 5 minutes of instruments at the end of the song. You'll love it I promise
Don’t understand, could you tell me the second, third, forth and fifth. I I think what comes next is sixth
One of 30 best songs from 70's
Don’t think I’ve ever seen Knopfler play as well as this…
Here's a man just having a blast in his prime. Effortless genius.
Without a doubt one of the greatest rock songs ever written
I was born in 1979. This is pure joy
Mark Knopfler, unforgettable 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
Постоянно и совершенно.
Pick Withers is an absolute beast on those drums!!!
Very underrated though
This guy is a guitar god. Period.
Legend! ❤
😮😊❤@@gyulakeresztes
Quality video and sound!
The Dire Straits saved the guitar rock when they came along. Saved us from the disco music of the day.
Mark Knopfler is so underappreciated. That picking technique is some really cool stuff and the way he just casually sends out those licks in between vocals is just great.
Underappreciated by whom. You need to be a complete tool to underappreciate this legend.
@@Aviba Definitely doesn't show up on as many top guitar lists as he deserves.
@@blairlohnes8103 Well, Chet Atkins noticed how good he is. Finger pickers are rare in the rock n roll world. Atkins said he was the best vibrato picker he ever heard, and made an album with him.
@@mikedegregorio9113 Still amazes me that he never used a pick to play this. In hindsight, I guess I can hear it after watching this. I guess I've only associated not using a pick with classical and Spanish flamenco guitar. After 20 years of learning music, I still have much to learn, and I hope I will after another 20. It's like a game you just get better at but never really win. Thanks for pointing that fact out, definitely adds some validity to his legacy in rock.
5:20 I went to his "Kill To Get Crimson" tour in 2008. When he played this song, most people must've thought he's getting too old and would gloss over this part and play a "softened" version. But no, he played it *like a boss* and the whole crowd erupted and jumped to their feet in a spontaneous standing ovation. Was an awesome thing to see.
ESTA CANCION ES ETERNAMENTE UNA DE LAS MEJORES ROLAS DEL MUNDO...ese punteo de guitarra me escarapela la piel desde que tenía 16 años..
Classic for the ages. So good.
The final solo is one of the best written of all time.
My all time fav. Guiter solo
The best guiter solo ever
Yup that finale gets me every time ever since I first heard it, I get frozen in time whenever I hear it!
Have you ever heard of Robert "Bobby" Dirks?
Here is a song that my friend Bobby wrote and he was also playing in the band Mechanize, but I believe they recently broke up. Here's that song: ua-cam.com/video/8-HRyh_04rk/v-deo.html
This is brilliant but I must say tunnel of loves solo is better. (My opinion.)
These guys are among my best favorites and they have never gotten the level of recognition they deserve.
Lúcia
The got the level of recognition already by me, that's all they need.
Got addicted to this song.
I lived in West Germany at the time and remember seeing this performance on the TV programme Rockpalast. About the only watchable entertainment programme at the time. Magic.
Knopler’s guitar is like the first time you heard rain on falling on your tent with your girlfriend.....unforgettable❤️
What a sublime comparison, and it is so true!
Mark Knopfler came from outer space... WHAT A SUPREME GUITAR PLAYER!!
He is alien like!I think he is better than Clapton, who is rated 2nd in the world!! Jimi Hendrix is of course number 1 in the.world. I saw him in 1973 and he played guitar with his teeth!! Could not believe what I was seeing!! R.I.P. JIMI!!
@@sheilaroxannehaefner2622 Wait you saw who in 1973

I Disagree with you Shelia Roxanne. This Group is #1. Even the Battles woups have grabbed them up if possible
So u r so WRONG ON THIS !! This Group can OUTPLAY, them THEM ALL 👍👍👍👍
Correction / Meant to say the Beetles
In terms of Mark's singing, this is the best live version of Sultans of Swing I've seen.
It's almost needless to heap more deserved praise on the fluid, imaginative playing and Mark's plaintive, out-of-the-mist baritone voice, but may I add a bit about the lyrics? At a time when so much was a variation on "Baby, you're just so hot out there on the dance floor," or something about sad breakups, groin-grinding, whatever...This was a bit like Charles Dickens stepped out of a time machine & popped in for a pint after a puff on the parking lot and started thinking of chapter titles for his comeback novel about London sliding reticently into a slightly spooky future. It's a sweet sad novela. Thanks for your time & for having lasting good taste...each one of you!
This was such a good analogy!
You have a point and the song references it with the line about "it's not what they call Rock & Roll." It seems like you're trying to reference Disco and that's OK, but the biggest Rock bands at the time were Led Zeppelin and Bad Co., among others. So yeah, most kids weren't looking to listen to Creole or Jazz.
@@MrBlaktoe Hey, Thanks for giving it a look. But, No, not disco, per se, just the idea that so much Pop has always been Boy/girl romance-based. Even Zeppelin were "..gonna give you every inch of my love" and wasn't Bad Company talking about "I can't get enough of your Love?" ...I realize it's the "trumpet-playin' band" that the boys "don't give a damn about" and they didn't come in to hear "the Jazz go down." I didn't think it's because they were looking for Disco, but...Hey, at least we're here considering each others' takes on great songs! Have a good one! 👍🏻
Forever Dire Straits!

Thank you camera man for focusing on his hands during that last solo. Awesome!
I have the wonderful memory of stage crewing for these guys at Trent Poly. Might have been 1979 or 1980. I still have the broken drum stick from the gig and the tour badge. Shortly afterwards they became huge and you couldn't get a ticket for any of their gigs . Happy days.
42 years ago. My god where has the time gone
Yep, took a nap now im old.
This man is a genius
One of their best songs. Mark was sitting in a bar when on tv he saw the name of a jazz band called The Sultans Of Swing.
Today at age 70, Mark still plays well. Doesnt move much anymore, but age has only improved that great talent in Mark Knopler. Long live Mark Knopler and thanks Mark for all the lovely songs you have given us.
His mind & body are perfectly coordinated. So relaxed = so powerful. He is using just the amount of effort needed and the sound just flows. A master.
How can a person possibly play that good?
1 of the best bands ever
Mark has made such great music through the years. I must have every one of his albums. I don’t think I can say that for any other musician.
Mark is pure genius here and he's backed by John Illsley on bass, Pick Withers on drums, his brother David on rhythm guitar, it doesn't get better
If...... you know to dance ,, you certainly will appreciate this...... the rhythm was created for......... dancing feet !
Summer of 1979 I was playing in a swing band and this was on the radio all day long. Good times!
One of a kind style, so laid back like it isn't any real effort. And to author such a song from nothing, wow!
