Pretty sure they do that to encourage people to take it to the service department just like designing a battery that has to be programmed to the alternator by the service dept(for a mere 200 dollar fee of course)
I have two VWs with these engines, and I agree completely with this sentiment. There's a bunch of overly complicated regular maintenance jobs I've noticed over the years. Changing the air filter should require ZERO tools. Metal spring tabs work just fine. Plastic tabs? Screws only accessible from beneath? What's wrong with these people? Two possible reasons why this kind of crap exists... 1. VW want you to break stuff during a service so they can sell you new parts. 2. You get so hacked off doing a home service, you put it into a VW garage, and then they can charge even more for what would normally be a really simple task. After Dieselgate, VW seriously need to improve their attitude towards customers, otherwise they'll ruin their business, as loyal customers become more and more pissed off with simply stupid crap like this. They're actually risking the entire "Engineered in Germany" generic quality assurance.
I was looking for this video for my 2017 caddy, there's no other videos on youtube, I would never have figured it out myself, thank you and maybe add caddy to the title as well, cheers from Australia.
Great video, some additionnal tips my friend and I found out the hard way: - when separating the tube from the housing, make sure to leave the clamp on the thicker part of the housing, otherwise your pliers may not be large enough to reach the clamps (if like me you only own 1 pair of pliers) - if that happens, you can use the handle of the pliers to open it a little, then use a screwdriver or something to keep it opened by jamming it between the clamp and the tube. Then you should be able to use the normal part of the pliers to open the clamp completely - when buying a filter, make sure it fits a 1.4L (like the video), the 1.8L filter has a very different form factor
Thanks Dave. Saved my day!!!! Couldn't figure out why the cover didn't just pops us when the clips are released...oh...there are freakin screws at the bottom of the whole thing...obviously.
Thank you for this video. The stupidity of this design amazes me. Changing an air filter shouldn’t be this complicated. All other cars I’ve owned is undoing a couple clips, remove a cover and replace the filter. Using screws on the underside of the housing is just poor design.
It's like they go out of their way to make these cars hard to service. Why would they put the screws hidden on the bottom, and then highly visible snappy clips on the top? Someone before me broke off two snappy clips and lost one of the screws.
Next time they should plastic weld these shut and require us to obtain snorkeling gear to retrieve a spell from the bottom of the ocean that opens it up.
What is the name of the part that connects that valve you just removed to the engine? And is it possible to Replace it because we accidentally broke it & the piece stayed inside the valve
I just did it.. it’s a bitch.. good vice grips make the hose clamps easier. Make sure the screws are backed all the out or you will think a plastic release tab is holding you back.. plan a hour for.. you may get it done little sooner
On behalf of all 2017 jetta owners, Your a legend my bro. Thank you
The Jetta air filter box doesn’t come apart like most other cars. Leave it to the Germans to make it more complicated! Great helpful vid! Thanks!
Yeah, that’s sadly a trait of German over-engineering. I just changed my filter outside the Autozone and it took longer than it really should.

Thanks for the info nicely done! This is my last VW the engineers must wake up every morning and smoke crack. How about two screws on the top?
That is bloody right. I`ve injured my hand very bad during unplugging the pipe.. I was nearly going to brake the pipe with bracelet itself :S
I would guess meth bc they invented it.
This alone is reason to never buy a Jetta.

This came in handy especially after the dealership wanted to charge me $49 for filter and installation lol. Thank you
They wanted to charge me 80 bucks haha
thank you, this is was my first time doing any mechanical work on a car. this helped me alot
Thanks Dave. Saved my day!!!! Couldn't figure out why the cover didn't just pops us when the clips are released...oh...there are freakin screws at the bottom of the whole thing...obviously.
Thank you! I'm recently divorced and my ex handled all that before so I'm learning as I go. Thanks for the help!

Thank you! Just a heads up for other people, don’t be like me and put the housing on the concrete , I ended up scratching it.
Straight to the point thank you for that
I think its similiar with 2018 VW Tiguan since i have that car with 1.4 TSI CZDA engine, Thanks and i will try it 😁
Nice and simple. No bs talk. I like
You just saved my life bro 😎 thank you 🙏🏻

Did you change the spark plug as well?
F..., Can't they make it more difficult?
Very helpful video. Thx
Great explanation video !!!

Thank you. Quick and clear video. 👍👍👍
This shit gave me PTSD.
Thanks for the video

Thanks. They certainly didn't make it easy to access the filter.
Very helpful- thank you brotha
Thanks for the instructions
Thanks! Dumb design in my opinion but still appreciate the video.
Small hose in the back of hosing, I the plastic off into the hose
Thank you 🙏

nice!
Im so annoyed that its not super simple and accessible like other cars smh I love my VW but I also hate it lol
What a pain in the ass
