While doing my research on Indian Cities, I found something interesting facts: Name of the City Mumbai has been changed many times over years. Historians and Rulers changed by their own name like sometimes it is called as Bombaim sometimes Tana-Maiambu But oldest name of this city was Kakamuchee and Galajunkja. Its so strange guess if this name wasn't changed then how people used to say now a days. It became Mumbai by late 20th Century. British Rulers had changed its name to Bombay and then around 1995 again changed to Mumbai by Political parties.
And do you know Delhi is now most populated city in the world after Tokyo but it is estimated that it would be first by 2030. It is seen that population of Delhi is increasing so fast than other cities in the world.
It is so miserable to say that we british ruled india over years so brutally. Seriously I was crying during my research on this topic because lots of things i found that how we british were so cruel and mean and rude. We killed lots of Indian.
I would only say SORRY!! INDIA 🇮🇳 on behalf of ALL Britishers..

Chennai's city limit is just 476 sq kms whereas Bengaluru's city limit is 710 sq kms, so it is obvious this that Bengaluru will outpace Chennai, but South India's largest industrial areas like Oragadam, Sriperumbudur, Ennore, Manali and one of the largest IT hubs Siruseri, OMR belt are not part of Chennai city limits if these areas are added, it will surpass Koltata's population if not at least it will be equivalent to Kolkata's population.

I see many answers saying Bangalore is the third largest city in India, meaning bigger than Kolkata and Chennai. If one sees the list of biggest cities in India, it does look a little weird to see Chennai below Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad and even more weird to see Kolkata below Chennai. There are few reasons why it looks so.
The “city limits” for Kolkata and Chennai have not been revised for many decades. For instance Chennai’s city limits until 2012 was 174 sq. km, which was drawn in 1974. After decades of not even changing it, the Government decided to slightly increase it to 426 sq km. The population hence changed from 48 lakhs (for 174 sq km) to 71 lakhs (for 426 sq km). However, this does not actually factor into account the whole Chennai city. The 426 sq km does not administer important and highly populated taluks of Chennai like Poonamallee, Avadi, Tambaram, Pallavaram, Vandalur, Tiruvallur, Ponneri, Kundrathur, Kelambakkam, Maraimalai Nagar and Sriperumbudur. These are all highly industrial areas and are part of Chennai presently. However, this is not factored in while determining size and population of Chennai. This will totally bring Chennai’s area to approximately 1800 sq km or so and a population of over 1.33 crore.
The area and population of Chennai that’s being shown in the internet is what is being administered as “Chennai district “. Till date, Chennai district is called as Chennai in official records. However, Chennai is quite big that it’s areas are also administered by Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet districts. These areas are being administered by other districts for ages and this simply has not been changed. But all these areas are integral part of Chennai and are widely referred to as “New Chennai”. These areas have not been included in Chennai district for ease of administration and haven’t been changed since 1970s. So, to see the actual size and population of Chennai, one has to look at the actual area it covers and not just go by what is administered by Chennai district (as shown in Internet).
Bangalore’s area is 709 sq km. But it’s metro region is 8005 sq km. This doesn’t mean the city is 8005 sq km big. No city in the world is that big. Bangalore simply followed what was done in Delhi and Hyderabad to include much larger area of adjoining districts as part of its metro region. In effect, close to 6500 sq km of this area is either not urban or is not closely connected to Bangalore, but is just part of Bangalore. This is not really part of the metropolis.
Putting it all together, even if people say Bangalore is 8005 sq km big (which is actually not), the population is 1.05 crore. The metropolis population i.e., the actual metro region the city covers is around 88 lakhs. But Chennai, whose actual area is around 2000 sq km has a population of 1.33 crores. Now, if Chennai follows Bangalore of including larger areas of other adjoining districts to be part of Chennai and brings a total area of say 8000 sq km under its area, the population would easily shoot above 1.5 crore.
One end to another end of Chennai would be approximately 80 kms apart. Of this, just under 30 to 40 kms would be under Chennai district zone, with the other part falling under other district administrations.
it’s also imperative to note that MTC (the public bus agency of Chennai) covers an operating area of 3900 sq km! This gives a better indication of how big Chennai is! A normal city bus route (102) would start from the city’s area that’s administered by Chengalpet district, pass through Chennai district and will end at Tiruvallur district, but still being in Chennai metro :p
In short, Chennai is bigger than Bangalore in terms of
area that the metropolis covers - 2000 sq km approx vs 800 sq km approx.
population (If you see the actual area that the city covers) - 1.33 crores vs 88 lakhs. Even if you consider 8000 sq km, Chennai still wins it. 1.05 crores vs 1.33 crores (with an area that way lower, lol)
Another point to add is on the economy size. A lot of people have said Bangalore’s economy is bigger than Chennai. That’s partially incorrect again. While it’s is right that Bangalore has been growing at a very higher rate than Chennai in the past few years, one must again understand that Chennai is a highly industrial city too. Bangalore’s metropolitan economy (8005 sq km) is around 175 billion $. Chennai’s economy (which is again the one pertaining to 426 sq km area of “Chennai DISTRICT” is around 90 billion $. But if all the areas that actually constitute Chennai as described above is added, the economy size is estimated to be around 210 billion $. This is because most industrial zones and IT corridors (Which contribute so much to the economy) do not fall under “Chennai district” and is still part of other districts like Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet. So, I think even in terms of economy, Chennai manages to get better of Bangalore.
Hope this answer helps!
Good information.

Yup, Pune's growth is constant. 👀🤷♂️
For ur information still lot u have to research with data Vizag and Coimbatore are bigger than Kerala cities and Madurai vijayawada are bigger than Thrissur
The data on kerala cities have compiled by taking urban agglomeration population into account. Just imagine a municipality like malappuram has more population than cochin city. And yes, the urban agglomerations like calicut and kochi is more populous that many other south indian cities.
@@cyruswest7986 atrem onnum illa kochi is small compared to tier 2 cites of tn Karnataka and andra .

I'm talkin about the urban agglomeration not corporation area. If you have any doubts please verify for yourself.

Yes, coimbatore is ranked just above kochi( as per 2011 census). But visakhapatnam is way below kochi and calicut. And this video puts out some projected data too. Since census data isn't out yet, you cannot really say coimbatore is more populous than kochi as of 2020/21.

It's very soon to come at 2nd position
Its cause most of their population is rural and with a bunch of medium sized cities. There's no huge urban area in bihar. Patna is the largest city there but its not big enough to be on the list above.
@@yoloswag1357 actually Patna metro population is far more than kochi calicut etc but new out growth of Patna is still not included in main Patna metro area
And in Kerala cities even uninhabited farm area are included in main city area
U can see in map itself how Patna is far better planed then unplanned Kerala cities

Its high time , we should create more metros than giving extra burden to the existing cities .
The most populous region of UP and Bihar has no major cities having population office 10+ M .
We should create strict limit to cities population .
No city in India should cross 12+M except Mumbai and Delhi .
Mumbai and Delhi city agglutiminations should have more area . and their population should never reach more than 25 .
No city in India should have 30+M population .
Cities should expand upwards.
UP actually has many metropolitan cities , population is not confined to one city.
There are 3 cities : Lucknow , Kanpur , Ghaziabad with over 3M people
3 cities : Agra , Meerut and Noida with over 1.5 M people
and many other ex. Prayagraj , Varanasi , Aligarh , Moradabad , Bareilly , Saharanpur with over 1M population
and many cities like Ayodhya , Gorakhpur , Mathura , Jhansi with population close to 1M , they will touch the mark in less than 5 years.
However most of UP's population is still rural and many cities are expected to become metro-politan
However in bihar there is just one city Patna with a population above 1M and less than 2M , though state population is above 100M
Nice background music 😁😁
For the people of India, how many states do you have?
In India , many states are divided on linguistic basis, except for Hindi speaking people . We have 28states , 9Union territories .

At this time when I am typing this comment it is 2020 how do you know the future till 2035
1980 kolkata took 1st place because of the great economy of the city at british time... But bengal has been divided and in this area two most biggest cities occurred Dhaka and Kolkata...
If in future, free trade between BD AND India be signed then Kolkata will be great again...
If you want to make kolkata great again u have to change the govt in WB, didi k pass koi vision nhi kolkata ka development k bare m, ye baat sach h, ha didi garib log k lie kafi madad ki hogi jrur, aaj kolkata m metro pure india m sbse slow chal rha due to unavailability of land, koi naya industries nahi aa rha h kolkata m ,
