why do felons lose the right to vote but a candidate can become president with a felony -- what gives?
Because the framers never thought the people would elect a felon!!!! So there's no law regarding criminals running for basically the highest office on earth. :(
Because the US is screwed up. Just like how someone can become president while losing the popular vote.
Good point!
The Constitution specifies qualifications to be president. A felony conviction is not mentioned.
For reasons such as lawfare. Hard to believe this is evening happening in a free society, but just wait until republicans use it on their opponents. Once you open Pandora’s box, it’s free game for everyone to use. Let’s see who uses lawfare better.

Imagine being the probation worker who has to meet with Trump and deal with his lying, arrogance and narcissism.
Probation for first time offenders might not have to actually meet with PO. Surely NYC has the system, as with other major cities like LA, where the criminal can just scan his/her fingerprint at a kisok place somewhere each week/month to make sure they aren't skipping out of town. Too old to go to jail but young enough to run the country? Seems logical.
His age should be taken into consideration. In the state of New York a class E felony carries a 1yr to 4yr sentence. Trump has 31 charges against him. If he got the minimum sentence he'd be serving 31 years in prison. Cut that time in half based on his age. He'd be serving 15 or 16 years in prison. Then give him an option for parole after serving half the sentence like most other criminals get. So trump would be in jail for 5 to 7 years and probation for any time he'd have left after that.
Seems about right to me.

Great answers. Key question not answered: what if he is elected and in jail, with no pardon? His VP becomes president via the 25th amendment, just as if he were in a coma for that amount of time, but expected to wake up? Also, it would be ridiculous/absurd if a man campaigning/boasting of his fitness to run the most powerful country in the world is deemed too frail to go to jail.
It would be absurd if he's convicted but not given jail just in case he wins. But that's precisely the type of absurdity I've come to expect from our two tier justice system. Ask that question you're not a bonafide American citizen , a your voting rights are gone , until you serve your sentenced . Even pardoned won't cut . Case in point Jefferson Davis was not allowed run any post in government.
Invalidate his presidential term!
THAT is exactly what has come to light in this trial. Trump was declared winner in 2016 after using these illegal means. So the proper remedy for a Guilty verdict is far more than just prison. It will mean that he never spent one single legitimate day in the Oval Office. Therefore...
3 Scotus judges will need to resign, because they are likewise illegitimate. And should they refuse to step down, then they need to be removed by the Impeachment process, because they will then have consented to Trump's High Crimes.
It doesn't work like that lol. If he gets elected then he gets elected, and a judge would probably delay his sentence till after his term
How can they do this it doesn’t make any sense
Can he be jailed awaiting his appeal ? Does his appeal automatically keep him out of jail?
Amazing. I was arrested 50 years ago for a misdemeaner and have a paper that says the only thing l could not do was run for politics. The paper is from the Ministry of Justice in NYC. 50 years ago....can you imagine what a joke that now
is. ??? Trump can run for president after mounting an insurrection???? What has happened to our country and.judicial system????
Well the Republican Party need to get some worthy candidates and put them forward . Also I think the problem is with the idea that you can only run for president of you have a stack of money or access to a stack of money .
And was caught on tape passing around Classified Military Intelligence - to put in a book no less!!! 🤦🏻♀️
US Idiocracy
When was he charged with an insurrection and by whom? When was anyone charged with insurrection recently?

So disgusted with the other cases. Garland being a wimp and the GA prosecutor embarrassing nonsense.
Time stamps would have been nice.
Thank you for telling the facts.
I'm very afraid.
Exactly what law is he accused of breaking? There is no law against paying off a bimbo, and if you gave her money that is a business deal. What law did he break?
TFG needs to be relocated to Gitmo.
Special Treatment UNACCEPTABLE
Absolutely nothing will happen. The rich always get a slap on the wrist.
Let's see if I'm wrong.
If he goes down it’ll be a political decision and bugger all to do with justice … I’d love to see him busted
Why should we listen time?
We the People are in DEEP DOO DOO.
