I really appreciate your effort to make this video. Retro PC community should be much stronger and post more videos like this. I’ve just bought one of these brand new for 500 USD locally. I am thinking of getting one more just in case from the same local guy. I also have Dell 2007FPb, HP LP2065, NEC LCD2090UXi, EIZO S2100. I’ve been collecting the ones I’ve heard about, just missing NEC P212. Too bad I probably won’t be able to compare them. I don’t know how to do it right as well as not enough of free space and a bit lazy to do so…I’ll most likely to sell the rest and keep the EIZO S2133. I however noticed something, a 19” monitor might be a better choice for very old games, the bigger the screen size the worst these very old games look. I wouldn’t go for 17” as I care about my eyes. With that being said, 21” screens are also great.
Hey thanks, appreciate the comment a lot. 500 USD is great for this monitor. I had my sights on the 2007 FPb but wanted something more modern. Arcooda has a 4:3 IPS with HDMI that might be worth looking into, but the delivery time takes awhile.
@@VoidbrandGallery I am mostly into retro games, so I don’t really need the HDMI port. If you don’t mind me asking…Did you pay the retail price for it? I hope not.
I have a 1280 x 1024 17" 75hz, beautiful for programming. Surfing on the web feels like everything is made for 5:4 or 4:3 monitors. Going to facebook marketplace, amazon and youtube is amazing too. Feels very easy in the eyes. I play Fornite, GTA V and Rocket League, and 75hz is great, all the minimaps can be easily located by your eyes, going to Facebook or other pages the side panels can be easily located in your eyes. That's the reason laptops, tablets and smartphone are popular, it's because everything is easily located by your eyes. 24" monitor 1080p 16:9 was a bad idea. TVs are for watching movies, PC is more than that
Great video! I've got the 2007fpb myself. The lag is fine for me so long as I make sure nothing else is laggy, like I won't use bluetooth controllers with it. The Eizo looks great but I can't spend that kind of money. If one popped up used locally for a nice price I might buy it. What makes this difficult is most of the later 4:3 screens that might have had decent refresh rates were also extremely budget, so they're usually 1024x768 or something similar, not 1600x1200.
@@strictlyninetiesAccording to some specs I’ve seen, the EIZO S2134 has a higher level of brightness and contrast 1800:1 versus 1500:1 on the EIZO S2133. Which will be better in very bright rooms. Other then that it seems to be the same.
I used to always get 1920X1200 monitors so that I could run retro pc games in 3:4 resolutions with integer scaling. I used to have a Dell u2415 which was very good.
Before this I would retro game on a 2560x1440 monitor, with black bars on the side and it was fine. Something about not having black bars though, it's like stepping back to the mid late 2000s when I had ViewSonic 5:4, except with 4:3 this time.
Lower input latency is crucial for a good gaming experience and while the higher refresh rate does allow better input latency on paper it does not guarantee it. For example a 120Hz monitor with 28ms input latency will be at disadvantage compared to 10ms 60Hz monitor in fast paced multiplayer game despite the difference in the refresh rate. A time between 2000-2010 some LCD monitors had very minimal input latency due to missing scalers but as the processing units were introduced the latency hit over 48ms at worst and 2010-2020 things got slowly considerable better. Still it's not unfortunately that uncommon to get 20ms input latency on average cheap monitor though.
That's good to know. I was comparing it side to side afterwards and the monitor really looks better in comparison. The monitor from the phone looks more "washed out" or brighter, even just comparing my Crusader videos to this one.
It noce that you can still get these and are made to this day, even acer has a couple models in 5 4 or 4 3 and offer the latest video connections, i think they are better for internet, file, and chat boxes for streaming. Some games that have limiting resolutions work wonders with these screens. 16 x 9 is the default now and uktrawide becoming more and more popular. 4x3 i dont think will go anywhere or die out just yet if there is still a demand for them
Thanks for making this video. Can you comment on how you find the monitor for general computing (browsing the web, reading text, etc)? I've heard it said that the 4:3 ratio is better for productivity than widescreen ratios, but I'm not sure how true that is.
You're welcome. I heard the same, but I personally don't really find myself using it for web browsing that much unless my 1440p monitor is occupied with video editing or something. I wouldn't want to watch UA-cam videos on it because of the black bars on the top and bottom, but there's some cases where a video is in 4:3 and it'll fit the entire screen which is nice (a lot of the games I play and upload here and the other channel would fit a 4:3 monitor). I find it perfectly fine if this was my only monitor though, I originally had this connected to a separate PC for old gaming and web browsing and didn't have any complaints with any websites I visited. Personally prefer to do spreadsheets on a 4:3 than 16:9 too.
TBH its a lot of money. as a retro gamer, i would just get a dell ultrasharp or a nice nec 1600x1200. i honestly do not see how this monitor justifies that price!
@@VoidbrandGallery thanks man! Is it possible to route the audio via one of the downstream USBs to a DAC for example? I'm super interested in this monitor
@Borgzz That's a good question... I have no idea. I have never used these ports before. superuser.com/questions/856297/what-do-the-upstream-downstream-usb-ports-on-a-monitor-do Reading through this says that any USB connecting device would work on it, as long as it stays within the power specs. But I've never used a DAC. Definitely double check before getting this monitor. Is there another LCD display you can test out? Upstream is USB 2.0: Type-B, and the downstream ports are USB 2.0: Type-A, so if it works on another monitor I don't see why it won't work on this one.
@@VoidbrandGallerythanks for the help man:) I looked into it more and I am more sure this won't work. My best bet Is to find an HDMi extractor (I am playing on a modded N64 with hdmi output) for the N64, split the hdmi signal into HDMI (video) and toslink for audio. The toslink signal will feed my DAC with sound but I would even use a HDMi to DVI-D adapter. A lot of tbings can go wrong if some elements don't support each other. I did find another monitor that has really nice specs and that is the Beetronics 19" monitor. I've never heard of this company but the monitor's specs seems on par with the Eizo :)
@Borgzz I never heard of them either, but if they got what you want then it should all work out. It's good to see some non-widescreen monitors still being made.
I have a Dell U2412M monitor. It is a 16:10 ratio with a resolution of 1920x1200. Like the 2007Fpb the panel is IPS which has good viewing angles. It is also LED backlit so it doesn't wear out anywhere as bad as old CCFL backlighting like my old 2007Fpb did. There is a feature to set the ratio to 4:3 so you can input any resulation upto 1600x1200 although it does not get on with the game with Psycho Pinball due to it's odd resolution.. If you have the psysical space and don't mind having the black borders on the left and right hand side this would also be an ideal cheaper alternative.
Eizo is great for professional use, but for the same price target why not considering an Arcooda 20139 which has 15kHz / 24kHz, HDMI, better response time and support for almost every of resolution?
thanks for review bro.... from south korea. as you told, there is no review of S2133..(maybe not only UA-cam..) so it is very helpful. so tell me your score out of 100 for playing retro game performance(dont think about price). (I am playing pcsx2, MAME...)
Thanks man, I'm glad the video helped out. I bought this for emulation, so it's perfect for your use case (10/10). PCSX2 is one of the programs I use + Kega Fusion, Duckstation, & DOSBox. No issues with any of them. And yes it's good for web surfing. Sometimes I prefer it because my main monitor is 1440p and I have to scale the text a little in a web browser.
Looks like it would work with the Retrotink 5x Pro upscaler from reading this reddit thread: www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/pmiemo/retrotink_5x_scanlines_on_dell_vga_monitor/ He's using it through VGA on a 1600x1200 Dell monitor. This user here is having trouble with the OSSC upscaler with a lot of brand monitors including EIZO: videogameperfection.com/forums/topic/cannot-get-5x-1600x1200-working-on-different-monitors-cables/ The EIZO S2133 doesn't support 50hz though, so I guess it would depend on the console's region.
@@VoidbrandGallery I have an Extron upscaler (DVS 304) and I plan to use it with a Sync Strike on the input and the Scanline generator on the output, both by Arcadeforge (haven't bought yet just have the upscaler). I already have two very good CRT's but it is difficult to justify them if I can find a modern 4:3 LCD panel like the one you reviewed. There is a cheaper alternative for someone wanting a 4:3 modern LCD (also rotates), the Iiyama B1780SD (17") and B1980D (19"), which you can get brand new easily. They both have a response time of 5ms, although obviously the picture quality wont quite be up to the Eizo's standard. I've looked around and I can get the Iiyamas brand new for ~£150 or the Eizo brand new for ~£650... that's quite a stark difference so I would love to hear from someone who has compared them.
Those monitors are in 5:4 1280x1024 resolution according to the website specs. If the Extron can upscale to that resolution they look like they'd be fine. I never heard of them so something new to look for. If a used EIZO pops up might be worth looking into unless you were looking for something new. The Dell 2007fpb seems popular in retro circles, but those early LCD monitors have input delay, and I'm hearing mixed results about it.
@@VoidbrandGallery I have checked the manual for the Extron and it can upscale to that resolution and many others, obviously there'll be a slight distortion but it's good to know. User manual has all this kind of info.
@@ΔαυίδΠριδεαυξ You could buy the popular Dell P1917S (also 1280x1024) instead of the liyamas because they are IPS with fast response times and very low input lag. They also have high quality coating and colors pop a lot.
Thanks. 💀 I gave it a try with my GPU (RTX 2080 Ti) and it doesn't look like it. Tried 1600x1200 75hz and it gave me a signal error when I was testing it.
I guess a vrr oled with ossc could give a better result with pixelperfect screen. I am thinking about two ways… use the crt (i need a new desk) with retro speakers, or use a highend modern display with some studio monitors. I also have the dell 2007wp, the biggest issue is not the lag (who cares at a typical 20-30fps in dos), the background light is yellowish and it is a 60hz screen, the scroll is not nice. Recently i have bought a modern cheap dell pva - it was amiga compatible, native 70hz with smooth scroll, but yeah, compared to the ips the colors are washed out. The eizo would be better, but it is also not perfect with the 60hz (and i think it cannot accept the 15khz signal) - the perfect retro display does not exist.
Amazing monitor, i cant afford it though sadly. Do you think the Eizo flexscan s1934 would make a good retro gaming windows xp monitor? Ive also been looking at some NEC 5:4 monitors theyre still selling on B&H
I checked it out. Response time looks a bit high (14ms), and I have no idea how high the input lag would be. I think 5:4 monitors are nice as long as people are ok with black bars for non 5:4 games. I see the S2133 go for about 300-500 on eBay if that's still an option.

I hope not.

Video and Audio is absolutely on point 👌
TVs are for watching movies, PC is more than that
I dig the use of Crusader music tracks. Imo maybe the best or at least in my top 5 of soundtracks ever made for any game.
I can definitely listen to both soundtracks without getting bored for sure.
I am seriously considering buying the S2134 refresh
that's not a refresh. it's the same monitor, just different model numbers.
@@strictlynineties Maybe. Looking at the specifications it seems to have had a number of upgrades
Beautiful. Hope to get one soon.
Still it's not unfortunately that uncommon to get 20ms input latency on average cheap monitor though.
even from your phone the picture looks crisp
That's good to know. I was comparing it side to side afterwards and the monitor really looks better in comparison. The monitor from the phone looks more "washed out" or brighter, even just comparing my Crusader videos to this one.
It noce that you can still get these and are made to this day, even acer has a couple models in 5 4 or 4 3 and offer the latest video connections, i think they are better for internet, file, and chat boxes for streaming. Some games that have limiting resolutions work wonders with these screens. 16 x 9 is the default now and uktrawide becoming more and more popular. 4x3 i dont think will go anywhere or die out just yet if there is still a demand for them
Just scored one on fb marketplace for $5 last week. 🎉
Excellent. That's a big score.
i did snatch an Eizo FlexScan S2133 in white for 50 bucks im in retro heaven
The white looks very nice. Enjoy it. Playing native 4:3 games and retro games on this display is something else.
Another drawback of the 2007fp(b) is that they can develop a yellow tint
Great review. Does it have minijack 3.5 input and output?
Thanks man. It doesn't look like it. Just the inputs in the back from the video, and 2 USB 2.0 downstream ports on the left side.
@@VoidbrandGallery thanks man! Is it possible to route the audio via one of the downstream USBs to a DAC for example? I'm super interested in this monitor
@Borgzz That's a good question... I have no idea. I have never used these ports before.
superuser.com/questions/856297/what-do-the-upstream-downstream-usb-ports-on-a-monitor-do
Reading through this says that any USB connecting device would work on it, as long as it stays within the power specs.
I had a similar model of this and noticed it had alot of ghosting it was very noticable in fast paced arcade racers like NFS Underground
Fortunately I bought this brand new for $393.. ^^ For reference, the regular price in Korea is $1060.
That's a steal for this kind of monitor. That's awesome. Hope you'll be as satisfied with it as I am. 👍
Honestly, that's a steal for this monitor!
i hope to get one of these
Eizo is great for professional use, but for the same price target why not considering an Arcooda 20139 which has 15kHz / 24kHz, HDMI, better response time and support for almost every of resolution?
thanks for review bro.... from south korea. as you told, there is no review of S2133..(maybe not only UA-cam..) so it is very helpful.
so tell me your score out of 100 for playing retro game performance(dont think about price). (I am playing pcsx2, MAME...)
one more question pls~ is it good for web surfing? in case it's pivot mode.
I managed tp grab the 2100 model real cheap ( 40 dollars used) its the same monitor but with cfl backlight. Maybe budget starved ppl might consider it

What game is that song from at the end of the video?
It sounds like something Hitoshi Sakimoto composed for Tactics Ogre or FFT.
If it's the gameplay bit at the end with me not talking, it's the Crusader: No Remorse/No Regret ending theme I believe.
Should be nice with an upscaler and scan line mod plugged into an old console?
Looks like it would work with the Retrotink 5x Pro upscaler from reading this reddit thread: www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/pmiemo/retrotink_5x_scanlines_on_dell_vga_monitor/
He's using it through VGA on a 1600x1200 Dell monitor.
This user here is having trouble with the OSSC upscaler with a lot of brand monitors including EIZO: videogameperfection.com/forums/topic/cannot-get-5x-1600x1200-working-on-different-monitors-cables/
The EIZO S2133 doesn't support 50hz though, so I guess it would depend on the console's region.
Is it possible to overclock the refresh rate using a modern graphics card? Great review btw.
Thanks. 💀 I gave it a try with my GPU (RTX 2080 Ti) and it doesn't look like it. Tried 1600x1200 75hz and it gave me a signal error when I was testing it.
@@VoidbrandGallery thank you very much
@@VoidbrandGallery I do remember finding a forum post where someone was able to overclock to 1600x1200 70hz in windows but gave errors in DOS games.

I think 5:4 monitors are nice as long as people are ok with black bars for non 5:4 games. I see the S2133 go for about 300-500 on eBay if that's still an option.

Please stop this disinformation. There is no guarantee that EIZO still uses Panasonic panels. This is probably why EIZO doesn’t even publish such information as source for panels often changes. The model you saw, was tested in 2013. After reading Reddit, people say EIZO quality control went down. Just purchased two new. One has noticeable back light bleeding.
