@@ThatGuyOnTheInternetAndMore Yes, they're an incredibly political punk band and always have been. Why wouldn't politics come up? It's what I've always loved about Green Day. Remember when they brought Pansy Division on tour with them because they despised the jock-filled, conservative void that their audiences had become as they grew more popular? It was brilliant to watch those intolerant conservative meatheads forced to deal with an incredibly-in-your-face gay punk band :D

Billie Joe has a good voice for the music Green Day makes. His voice is distinctive and iconic in pop punk/ pop culture at this point. You hear his voice and you know it's Green Day or Billie Joe (depending on if he does something solo like he did during covid or features as he's done). There are way worse vocalists doing punk music and way better but he's used his voice and songwriting with Green Day to become a legend at this point in the industry.

Exactly right. The band Kansas isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame, because they have religious tones to their later songs. Which shows it's only political. If you are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame today, it means you are a left wing sell out. You are not talented, you are a useful member of the cult. Congrats to Green Day, You are in a Marxist cult.

BJA & Adrienne were married 14 days before me, and that month it was Dookie that sucked me in. I was 25. My son was born days before American Idiot was released. Twenty years later I was at a GD show last summer and during the long wait before they came out - a bit buzzed & high - I just started belting Basket Case and got what must have been 1000 people singing. It was like a wave.
I see myself in each of them, amd their music keeps me younger and happier. "Still Breathing" came along 60 days after I was set to take my life and it snapped me out of it. I love them.

  • @zombiepicnic9683

American Idiot was done on Broadway. So it's very interesting to hear the difference between a classically trained, professional singer performing these songs vs the guy who came up in the east bay punk scene of Oakland CA in the 80s. As a longtime Green Day fan, it sounds like the edge has been sanded off the songs with the "better" vocalist from Broadway. That unique tone from Billie Joe adds character to the overall sound of the songs in a way I didn't notice until I heard the other versions.

Couple of things. It’s not tech issues they were playing live on BBC 3 and they muted the swear words. For this performance he was pretty drunk and later went into rehab. They played Dookie in its entirety at this gig for the 21st anniversary. Dookie and American Idiot are both celebrating their 30th and 20th anniversaries this year. They have just released their new album Saviors and they are still amazing. Can’t wait for the tour in June as they are playing both Dookie and American Idiot live in their entirety at every tour date.

I don't think Billie Joe Armstrong is a good singer by the standards of big time rock music. By comparison to singers like Robert Plant, Joni Mitchell, Nancy Wilson, Bruce Dickenson, Freddie Mercury, and a handful of others, he doesn't have their range, their technique, their versatility, or their expression. He's often pitchy in concert. He often strains for notes in ways that are not very healthy or technically sound. And he's not notable for his vocal range. I wouldn't say he's terrible, but not good by comparison to others within his general genre and tradition.
YET, I do think he has a distinctive voice that's good for his band. He's a little like Bob Dylan in that way -- not a very good singer, but a distinctive voice. I think he's a good performer. And I think he's a smarter and more interesting songwriter than almost any pop-punk band from his era. That's good enough.

He’s the only singer I can think of who sounds like a completely different person in the beginning of his career than he does now. Hello Beth. I enjoy so much your reactions, and your songs. I would like to suggest one, though i know its a long shot. It would be awsome if you could react to Roger Taylors ( Queen Drummer) Voice. I think he has one of the best voices of a non mainly singer ever. His high falsetto is increddible. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Definitely worth a listen. Maybe Masters of War or Foreign Sands. I think those two show his voice in different ways beyond the (albeit impressive) famous falsetto. 39 is good for that though. Ethereal backing vocals.

I saw Green Day in concert and they put on by far the greatest show I've ever seen and I've been to 100 concerts. Even Metallica didn't put on as good of a show as Green Day. When Green Day was playing Jesus of suburbia it took him so long that they faked like they were dying and passing out on the stage
