Hey chris can you build me a centerconsole just like that with the same equipment except the siren. I'm getting a 2011 crown vic police interceptor for a Firefighter POV need a center console.
not entirely sure why everyone is hating on the quality lol, last time I checked he's a mechanic not a carpenter .... nice job, IT GOT THE JOB DONE. awesome Chris. we still, all learned something.
Sometimes good enough is good enough! It's not a show car! I'm gonna try to get mine to look a little better, use a cloth backed vinyl and a heat gun. If I don't like it, THEN I'll spend the $250 and give mine to my kid for his jeep. If I like it, I'll help him build one too! I reupholstered the convertible top on my '57 Tbird (not a show quality car but a driver). Used a how to video I bought and it turned out good enough for me. Saved a ton of money and allowed for shrinkage. The pro's would have gotten a nicer fit but it wouldn't have lasted once the vinyl started shrinking. Happened to my dad back in the day had he had to redo his himself!
I know you probably won't see this comment, but I love the amount of positivism and enthusiasm you put into your videos and into your work. Thank you for doing what you do Chris. I appreciate it.
Just to answer some questions: The inside of the console is not done, I have some cool ideas for it but I need to run the ideas past the officer. Next, The lid needs to be fixed. I did not account for the extra foam on the side, just the wood thickness so it looks "off" which is why I think some of you think it looks "ugly". Finally, I appreciate the feedback and hope you guys enjoyed the video!
For the inside, I think if you used the plastic that you used around the switches and form an inner box that would cover the vinyl and staples. This would work well on the inside of the box lid too. Maybe use black countersink screws. You might even be able to hide the hinge this way. Failing that, you could use very thin carpet (we call it office carpet, dunno what they call it where you are) glued to the inside.
+ChrisFix All good, Chris! Appreciate you taking the time to make videos. I'm sure documenting this process wasn't the easiest and of course, we all make mistakes. Keep up the great work!
I actually have a "center console" on my motorcycle xD Or well, the tank acts as the console and there is a storage space with electronic lid in the top of the tank ^^
mine is a Pegaso 650, so not too far off from dual sports and adventure bikes :D But yea, it would be a bit awkward on an SMC690 xD And man, you don't want to let your dreams be dreams. Just do it!XD
I own a car but it already has a good center console. Huge storage space and 2 (mediocre) cupholders that come out of the console. Also works as a really good armrest. I have no idea why I watched this.
Usually in North America we have ours there too! But with police cars, they relocate the gear stick to the dash. But in minivans and some trucks, they are on the dash from the factory. Example, My neighbor bought a retired police ford explorer from 2014 and the gear stick was on the dashboard but the same car, for civilians, had the gear stick on the console! :D It's kind of dumb but they need their radars and light controls and custom switches and blah blah blah all that stuff there. also, everywhere in the world has at least a few cars that have the gear stick on the dash but still all country's have the majority of there cars with the gear stick on the center console.
All these people telling you to buy a factory made console don't understand the satisfaction of making something on your own. Honestly the console has exceeded my expectations and I think it looks amazing, especially with minimal tools and cheap materials. Great work, my friend!
Very nice work Chris. A lot of work went into making that center console. You can buy some really nice ready-made center consoles for around $100. You can buy one, then modify it, which is what I would do. You can use corner brackets on the inside, rather than screws on the outside.
It's also going in a cop car. So it doesn't need to look that beautiful. Just needs to get the job done. What Chris built gets the job done and then some. It's not a rolls Royce folks.
+TJC450 Thats not a great mentality to have. So what it doesnt need to be beautiful, you should still make it as good as possible. Considering he is building that car to a client.
@@rmaul2469 you can custom make one at home that looks way better then factory, just follow a proper upholstery video to get better techniques. chris just covered the basics and not very well. but hey, he got the job done.
Hey Chris. I love the videos. Just some tips from an upholsterer. Keep those staples close and flush with the fabric. Don't angle the staples or it has an increased risk of coming apart. Stretching the foam over the edges or edge stapling the foam to the wood will help it to look cleaner. I upholster chairs and sofa consoles at La-z-boy. Keep up the great videos.
Chrisfix- I would have never thought of tackling a project like that. Now that I've seen it I might try it out in the future. You did great work on this one and you always hang it out there. Keep it up! Thanks for the inspiration.
Even though i might be the only one watching this 2 years later note i already watch this but i like his videos so i like rewatching them. 90% of the people here are not going to build a center console but we watch this becsuse you are so entertaining love you bro.
Personally, I think gluing that front piece in would've helped ensure it was securely in place. I think spray painting the inside of the armrest black would've been a nice touch too. Otherwise, this turned out pretty great - good work.
+Peter Schmidt There is no reason to glue the front piece. It allows for quick access to the electrical wires when it gets wired in. As for the inside of the arm-rest, you could do more if you want. That is all up to the individual. In this case, I am not sure what the officer wants. maybe he wants a gun holster in there or something like that so I did not finish the inside.
Chris I'm glad and really happy of your youtube success.... I came across your channel 1 day when I was bored looking at oil change videos and I subscribed... I was there when you had less than 20k subs.... However with the success comes the ugly side of youtube.... The Trolls!!! please understand that you are awesome and we appreciate you keep the great work up!!! Thanks for being you!
I am so glad someone thought of doing this video. I am bidding on an aftermarket console from a police department in Ohio. It is an auction site. If I lose that auction, I will be building some variation of what you made. I work in security and direct traffic for utility companies. I have lights in my car that I use for those jobs and will be hardwiring all of it. I also have other equipment that will go into the console. Thank you.
Hey Chris, I notice that 30% of comments are negative because people think it looks terrible and the work is very amateur . I just want to say you did an extremely great job with what knowledge you have and materials you could use. Don't listen to the haters, they can either make a video on how its done or they can SHUT THE HELL UP. Keep up the good work Chris!!!!
Can't wait for all the wiring, that's what I'm really interested in. The console looks good, but the screws in the plastic stand out, maybe use flat heads instead and paint them, or cover with some plastic caps?
+Choujeen thats why he used stainless screws because they are more appealing to the eye, you could use black screws too but then it just looks like you tried to hide them and it didnt work. I like the stainless look myself.
Ive been following you for about 5 years now. Ive never posted a comment on ur videos. The thing i have to say is, you really deserve what u have achieved so far👍 keep up the good work👍
I will have to say, wrapping it with the fabric and foam is the hardest part, my dad is a master upholster and you didn't do half bad. But I do have to correct now that the glue that you used, that spray adhesive is not the same stuff you would use on a headliner. Maybe for a cheap fix but headliner glue is some of the strongest stuff you can have or breathe. And you can't actually use it in residential areas period but for what you can do at home you did a great job
I don't understand why there is so much hate on this video, it looks super good to me and I'm considering making one for my bronco! good job I love your videos keep it up. One thing I can think of that you could do is install some velcro to keep the lid from opening over bumps.
I don't ever work on my car myself or build add ons to my car but this video was so entertaining and made me want to watch all the way through. Great video bro!
Hey Chris, This was very thorough and it taught me a lot. Great job man! One thing tho, what if you had used a memory foam for the padding? Any downside to doing that instead of just regular foam?
Hey ChrixFix, I'm glad you're doing another police project car video after that. I think you can touch up and improve the center console a bit more, such as hide the staples from sight by putting plastic on the bottom of the flip cover, and the interior walls of the storage area. The storage area is deep, although I'm not sure if it could be utilized all that well. Could you show us how to add rear AC vents to the center console and make some kind of shelf storage system and add racks which would be more useful? Police Project Car Videos are always awesome, I'd be looking forward to Part 3 of center console with fine-tuning and maybe even an AC attachment!
Good job! just one point. When stapling the fabric start at the center and work your way out to both sides, that way you can stretch the material and avoid wrinkles.
Is very sad that lots of the comments are negative, but what makes it even sadder is the amount of hate in those negative comments. We all know that Chris not a pro, and if ya don't like the videos simply don't watch em. Save all that negative $#!7 🖕
a lot of people are dissing the bulkiness or the screws showing, but it looks well placed for a police car, thats the point of this you can make it however you want and make it match the car its going in, your car and your imagination are the only limit to what you can do or how something should look
Chris, check into how to stretch a canvas to a frame for painting. Use that technique for stapling, it makes for an even stretching and reduces wrinkling. Basically you start from the centers and work your way to the edges. Some more of that abs plastic would be great to use as a bottom and sides for the insides to cover the wood and cover the staples as well.
My Dad owns and operates an upholstery shop in California and I show his this video His comments were: -Your using the vinyl material wrong. -Your not pulling hard enough to make the material stretch. -You should be using a heat gun to stretch the material easier -Your wrap job is crap. -You should put felt were the plain wood is. -Add good cup holders. -Cut the access material after the staples.
That looks like shit! But hey, I bet it was fun building it. Still enjoyed watching the build. And still a fan. Keep them vids coming buddy!!! And after working on a car, dont forget to use your soapy water.
Hi Chris. I just purchased a used ranger for work. The truck is awesome, however much like your truck the center console was broken. I liked most of the things u used to for this build however I personally would've used black carpet like the once used for subwoofer boxes. Also, I personally didn't like the look for the lid hinges. I feel as if it could've been hidden in between the wood and the foam you used. The switches do look awesome and when I put some lights on the truck I'll wire the it to the center console. Overall it's a great build I really appreciate the idea.
Also just a tip, use a router or sander and round over bit or use the sander to round off the sharp edges, makes for a much cleaner look and makes a very nice piece. sandpaper will work but way more work and not as nice results
And yet another video gone perfectly smooth, ALMOST! (If you didn’t already realize I’m talking to the people that are complaining about the design and looks. It wouldn’t be any better if he wasn’t a youtuber would it? SO JUST GO WITH THE FLOW!
ChrisFix I think it looks good. I have bucket seats in my truck w a big space between and your videos really helped me with some ideas. Thinking about making mine with stained wood though instead. Any advice??
I think this is the best result an amateur upholsterer can get. Very good work. I think I would have used something like superglue or pins at the bottom of the frontpanel to make sure to keep it in place.
+kilésengati Do you think you could cut down an off the shelf Ikea/Home Depot kit - something with a little more finishing (instead of plywood) cover it like he did and get a better result? No snark - honest question: It seems to me the key is the finish of foundational piece. or would there be too many cuts/ joints? Cudos to Chris for putting himself out there.
mr7wi If I would do something like this by myself I would definitly prefer a fibreboard over plywood anyway. I think a DIY-kit from a store would just be a little bit better. I never seen such a kit though. Nonetheless, I wouldn't do both and buy a spare part or certified third-party middle console because these would be the only ones who would pass the car inspection in Germany. I still don't get what this has to do with my comment and suggestion.
What’s up with all the hate comments? Last time I checked he’s a mechanic not a fashion designer. Plus, do u think the police would even care that it doesn’t look PERFECT? All it needs to do is get the job done (and be comfortable)
Simple and effective. People bitching about how it looks, durrr it is homemade. Definitely going to build a small one for my truck for all of my light switches. I'm also going to be building a tray rack like what you did in project night light. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos and giving us inspiration and ideas.

a lot of people are dissing the bulkiness or the screws showing, but it looks well placed for a police car, thats the point of this you can make it however you want and make it match the car its going in, your car and your imagination are the only limit to what you can do or how something should look
+ʇɥƃᴉɹlɐ ʇou ɯᴉ Thanks a lot!
+ggin nj Thanks for the tip!
Now would ya just LOOK AT IT
in one part of the video he goes makes sure dont have a hard edge. that's what she said.
😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑
Damn
Matt
But wheres the cupholder for the donuts and coffee XD
ah yes the donut cupholder of course how could he forget
Why does this crown Vic have a gear selector in the steering?
That shaped up really well. The individual customizations are limitless: cup holders, storage organizers, etc.
Thanks!
I love car channels and most are boring but yours is so fun and entertaining and not boring
I couldn't do this.. Too OCD
I would freak over every wrinkle..
And I wouldn't have any idea what I'm doing but... Those wrinkles...
I haate working with leather, canvas and thouse stuff aa the wrinkles and it never turns out as i expect
The upholstery needs some work, but other than that, looks awesome!
+ComandanteJ Thanks!
Don't get the random hate, I thought it turned out pretty nice
+Frabjie Thanks!
Your rocker switched may be backward. In industrial use, red always means OFF and is DOWN (to the back) for emergencies. Pretty nice job, though.
My Dad owns and operates an upholstery shop in California and I show his this video
His comments were:
-Your using the vinyl material wrong.
-Your not pulling hard enough to make the material stretch.
-You should be using a heat gun to stretch the material easier
-Your wrap job is crap.
-You should put felt were the plain wood is.
-Add good cup holders.
-Cut the access material after the staples.
Put a cup holder in the centre console
Marcus Doyle YYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH
That looks like shit! But hey, I bet it was fun building it. Still enjoyed watching the build. And still a fan. Keep them vids coming buddy!!! And after working on a car, dont forget to use your soapy water.
this is how newer couches are manufactured...
I don't get all the criticism from the comments... It looks really nice, good job. Better than what I could pull off
ChrisFix, impregnate me
yes
yes
Eduardo.R9 wtf
Eduardo.R9 you have a strange name for a woman
Lucky lmao
That's really ugly thing! But done by it self. Nice
Thanks! I put it to use in this episode: ua-cam.com/video/1-F0PIF8Hqo/v-deo.html
I love your energy, but this console is kind of a mess.
Electric staplers at Lowes for like thirty greenbacks bro. Amazed me the first time I used for porch screening. Two thumbs up!
Also just a tip, use a router or sander and round over bit or use the sander to round off the sharp edges, makes for a much cleaner look and makes a very nice piece. sandpaper will work but way more work and not as nice results
This is how many times he stapled 👇🏻
Nah I'll pass...that looks really bulky, heavy....but hey congrats nice build.
+Talons X Thanks! This is a police car, weight isnt a problem.
Is this a joke? that looks awful lol
+Michael “M4RCHY” March The lid part looks really bad. The rest is awesome though. And cmon, it's done with some wood, foam, staples and fabric.
Boris Terekidi what do you think professional fabricators use... Magic dust?
This looks like shit bro let it go lol
Better than most mods people do on their cars.
covering panels with fabric is similar chair/ottoman covering. adding that bit more of detail really brings a great touch of class.
And yet another video gone perfectly smooth, ALMOST! (If you didn’t already realize I’m talking to the people that are complaining about the design and looks. It wouldn’t be any better if he wasn’t a youtuber would it? SO JUST GO WITH THE FLOW!
u are not an upholster
er
API Cars haha i know right he had no seems those puckers made me think damn
Jonny Galabiz why are you all hating so much? I mean damn
Truth
Cudos to Chris for putting himself out there.
mr7wi What exactly is your problem?
Could you cut down an off the shelf MDF solutions or would it be better to jig something from plywood in this instance?
mr7wi If I would do something like this by myself I would definitly prefer a fibreboard over plywood anyway.
To be honest
You made an 18 minute video soo short and simple
I love your creative way of making theses videos
What’s up with all the hate comments? Last time I checked he’s a mechanic not a fashion designer. Plus, do u think the police would even care that it doesn’t look PERFECT? All it needs to do is get the job done (and be comfortable)
Simple and effective. People bitching about how it looks, durrr it is homemade. Definitely going to build a small one for my truck for all of my light switches. I'm also going to be building a tray rack like what you did in project night light. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos and giving us inspiration and ideas.
+ThisIsAPrettyLongUserNameWhyTheFuckWouldHeDoThatSoThatEveryoneWouldThumbsUpIt Thanks a lot man! I really appreciate it and I am glad the videos are inspirational and help give you ideas! That is exactly why I do this!
